Tampa in April: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds, Prices and Things to Do

Tampa in April is a spring trip with the storm calendar still closed. The Atlantic hurricane season does not open until June 1, the nights stay cool enough for a light sleeve on the Riverwalk, and the sun sets just before 8 pm. Mornings can go to a canoe on the Hillsborough River, afternoons to a Gulf beach, and evenings to dinner in Ybor City.

The water asks for a little courage. Gulf water off Tampa averages 77.1°F in April, measured as the mean of daily maxima, and the same measure reads 82.9°F four weeks later. Getting here is easy: Tampa International (TPA) boarded 12,075,591 passengers in 2024, enough for the FAA to class it a large hub, and our Florida flights guide covers the routes in.

April gives Tampa warm, mostly dry days outside hurricane season and a Gulf that swims fresh: book it for trails, paddles and the city, and wait for May if warm water is the whole plan.

If your April trip ends on a ship, Port Tampa Bay homeports eight vessels from five cruise lines, so Tampa is where you fly in and sail out rather than a one-day stop. For the full-year picture of the state, start with the best time to visit Florida, and pick a base with our where-to-stay guide.

NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for station USW00012842, the gauge at Tampa International Airport, give April an average high of 83.0°F, an average low of 64.8°F and 2.55 inches of precipitation. That is one real thermometer, not a reanalysis grid cell, and it stands inland on the bay side rather than on a beach. Every air figure here describes the airport, so read it as the city’s baseline and not as a reading from the sand at your beach.

Only 3.4 days in an average April record 0.10 inch or more, roughly one day in nine. A soaking of an inch or more arrives on 0.8 day, so about four Aprils in five hold one real downpour. On most days an umbrella can stay in the car, and a paddle booked for the morning rarely needs a backup date.

An average April day climbs 18.2°F between the dawn low and the afternoon high. Start a trail near 65°F in long sleeves and you finish close to 83°F in a T-shirt. Pack one light layer for the evening, a hat, sunscreen and a full water bottle per person.

April 15 brings about 12 hours 54 minutes of daylight. Converted from sunrise-sunset.org’s UTC times, the sun rises at 7:02 am and sets at 7:56 pm Eastern Daylight Time. Dinner on the water can start in full light, with sunset landing just before 8 pm.

Can you swim in Tampa in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Tampa at 77.1°F in April, averaged over 2015-2024. The figure is a mean of daily maxima: the warmest reading of each day, averaged across the month. It runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean, so a table that averages the whole day will print a lower number, and both describe the same water.

In practice, 77.1°F is swimmable water that still registers on the way in, under afternoon air near 83°F. Mornings sit below the monthly figure, so a first swim goes better in mid-afternoon. Honeymoon Island State Park, on the Gulf northwest of Tampa, has one designated swimming area and 2,021 parking spaces.

We found no wind or wave series for April off Tampa, so we give no forecast for chop or surf. Check the National Weather Service marine forecast on the morning of a boat trip or a swim, and read our Florida safety guide for beach basics before you go in.

How busy is Tampa in April? Crowds and prices

April falls outside the Atlantic hurricane season, set by NOAA from June 1 to November 30, and inside the dry months our Florida calendar describes. We found no hotel occupancy or monthly room-rate series for Tampa, so we rank no month cheap or expensive. We can place April on the calendar: spring, with no storm season in play.

Without a booking curve we can only estimate: reserve a room four to six weeks ahead (est.), earlier for a weekend. If you are sailing from Port Tampa Bay, book the night before departure in Tampa. A late flight into TPA on sailing day leaves no margin, and the ship leaves on schedule.

Hillsborough County levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on stays, filed and paid together with Florida’s 6% state sales tax, according to the Florida Department of Revenue’s form DR-15TDT. Budget both lines on top of any quoted nightly rate. We could not verify resort fees or parking charges at individual hotels, so we give no figure for them.

Location is the upgrade that changes an April stay. A room near the free streetcar or on a HART bus line turns the city days into car-free days: a HART ride costs $2.00 by Flamingo Fares card, app or contactless card, and the day caps at $4.00 after two rides. Keep a rental car only for the parks, and see our Florida trip-cost guide and getting around Florida for the rest.

Things to do in Tampa in April

April leaves the middle of the day open for the outdoors. Afternoons at the airport station run 5.3°F cooler than in May, and with 3.4 wet days in the month a paddle or a long trail rarely has to be cut short. Four weeks later, the same outing belongs to the early morning.

The state counts the facilities at the parks near Tampa. Hillsborough River State Park has 350 parking spaces, three canoe, kayak and tube launches and 5 miles of hiking trail. Little Manatee River State Park has 8.4 miles of trail, one launch and 109 spaces. Alafia River State Park is smaller, with 50 spaces, one launch and 1.2 miles of trail. In town, Ybor City Museum State Park has 311 feet of boardwalk. Check entrance fees and opening hours on the Florida State Parks website before you drive.

Farther north, the spring parks keep their water at the same temperature all year: Weeki Wachee Springs State Park (255 spaces and one designated swimming area), Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park (197 spaces) and Crystal River Preserve State Park (77). The air above them changes with the season, and in April a mild afternoon makes the walk to the water pleasant. We could not read a spring water temperature, so we quote none. Our manatee guide covers that side of the springs.

The TECO Line Streetcar costs nothing to ride. HART and the City of Tampa both publish the fare as free, and cars run every 15 minutes on a 2.7-mile line from downtown through the Channel District to Ybor City. With sunset at 7:56 pm, an evening ride to Ybor leaves in daylight.

Tampa in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one, the city. Around 8 am, while the air is still near the morning low, walk the Tampa Riverwalk: 2.6 miles along the Hillsborough River linking the Tampa Convention Center, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Tampa Bay History Center and Water Works Park. Give the warmest hours, roughly 1 to 4 pm, to a museum. By 6 pm, take the free streetcar to Ybor City, walk the state park’s boardwalk and stay for dinner past the 7:56 pm sunset.

Day two, the river and the Gulf. Drive to Hillsborough River State Park early, put in from one of its three launches, and walk part of its 5 miles of trail before noon. Spend the afternoon at Honeymoon Island’s swimming area, when the water is near its daily warmest. If the month’s one heavy downpour lands that day, swap the park for the Glazer Children’s Museum and the Tampa Bay History Center, both on the Riverwalk, and move the paddle to the next dry morning. Our 7-day Florida itinerary extends the trip.

Tampa in April vs March and May

Normal March April May
Average high (NOAA) 77.8°F 83.0°F 88.3°F
Average low (NOAA) 59.3°F 64.8°F 70.6°F
Precipitation (NOAA) 2.52 in 2.55 in 2.60 in
Days with 0.10 in or more (NOAA) 3.4 3.4 3.9
Sea surface, daily maxima (Open-Meteo, 2015-2024) 73.9°F 77.1°F 82.9°F

On NOAA’s airport normals, April’s high of 83.0°F sits 5.2°F above March’s 77.8°F and 5.3°F below May’s 88.3°F. Nights climb in similar steps, from 59.3°F to 64.8°F to 70.6°F. Rain barely moves: 2.52, 2.55 and 2.60 inches, with 3.4 wet days in March and April and 3.9 in May. The Gulf moves most, on Open-Meteo’s daily-maxima measure: 73.9°F in March, 77.1°F in April, 82.9°F in May.

Going four weeks earlier buys cooler trail afternoons and costs 3.2°F of sea, plus a 59.3°F night that calls for a real sweater. Going four weeks later buys water 5.8°F warmer and costs afternoons near 88.3°F and half a wet day more. May still falls before the June 1 start of hurricane season. Each month has its own places and plans in Tampa in March and Tampa in May.

Is April a good time to visit Tampa?

Yes, for most travelers. Hikers, paddlers, city walkers and anyone flying in to board a ship at Port Tampa Bay get warm, mostly dry days with no hurricane season on the calendar. The answer turns to no if the trip hangs on long, lazy swims: water at 77.1°F by its daily maximum suits a dip better than an hour of floating.

If the Gulf is the point, pick May, when the same Open-Meteo measure reads 82.9°F and nights hold near 70.6°F. Families with young swimmers will spend more time in the water then, and our Florida with kids guide covers the rest of that trip.

Among March, April and May, April alone pairs a low-80s afternoon with a Gulf above 77°F and a night mild enough for dinner outside with one light layer.

The last word

Book the room near the streetcar, save one dry morning for a paddle on the Hillsborough, and let the rest of Tampa fill in around it. On the last afternoon, drive out to Honeymoon Island, walk its 1,671 feet of boardwalk toward the Gulf, and get in the water at 77°F while the sun is still well above the horizon. You will have until 7:56 pm.
