The wheels touch down and the question changes shape. Not what to see, but how to get from a terminal curb to a bed with your bags still attached to you. Orlando makes that question bigger than most cities do, because two commercial airports carry the name and the public bus network covers three counties rather than one downtown.
The return leg deserves the same attention and rarely gets it. A departure-day pass, a train seat booked before the travel day, a shuttle you assumed existed: those are decisions made before you fly. One number you will not find below: what a taxi or a rideshare costs from either terminal. Those fares are not in our sources, and a figure invented today would be wrong by the time you fly. Rates are posted at the ground transportation desks inside the terminal, and the apps quote before you confirm. Ask at the desk, or pull the quote while you are still standing at baggage claim.
MCO or Sanford: which Orlando airport to fly into
Orlando is served by two commercial airports. MCO boarded 27,859,783 passengers in calendar year 2024, the busiest in Florida and ahead of Miami. Sanford, SFB, boarded 1.4 million over the same year. Both figures come from the Federal Aviation Administration’s CY2024 tally. They are not the same place, and they are not the same distance from the parks.
A gap of roughly twenty to one shows up in ordinary ways: how many places you can reach nonstop, at what hours of the day, and how quickly a canceled flight finds you another seat. We will not list carriers or routes we have not read at the source. Open the route map of the airline you are considering and count its Orlando departures yourself.
How far Sanford sits from the theme parks is a figure we could not read. The airport’s own website blocks connections from Europe, where this was checked on September 8, 2026. What we can say is that SFB lies north of MCO. No mileage from us, and no drive time, until the operator’s own page can be opened and quoted.
So check three things before you book the cheaper ticket: the airline’s route map for your dates, the ground transportation page of the airport you would actually land at, and the cost of covering the last stretch to the address you reserved. A fare screen shows one number, and the trip has several. Transfers at both ends, parking if you rent, and the lodging tax. Orange County, which holds Orlando and the parks, levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on short stays, filed and paid alongside the 6% state sales tax. Getting from Orlando airport without a car
LYNX runs the public buses of Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties, so the map is regional rather than city sized. A single ride is $2.00, or $1.00 at the discount fare. That is the cheapest way into town by a wide margin, and the wrong tool at 11 p.m. with two checked bags, a stroller and a toddler who needs a car seat. Luggage room on a city bus is whatever fits under your arm.
Transfers are free, which matters when your address needs two buses rather than one. For a day of moving around, the All-Day Pass costs $4.50, or $2.25 discounted. The day pass has to be requested first. LYNX prints the instruction in capitals: tell the operator you want an All-Day Pass BEFORE putting money into the farebox. It runs from 4:00 a.m. on the day it is issued until 3:00 a.m. the following day, a window that covers an early departure-day run out to the terminal and a late arrival on the same ticket.
Brightline from Miami to Orlando: distance and time
Brightline connects Miami and Orlando over about 235 miles, a run of roughly three and a half hours. The clock starts at a station rather than at a security line, which is what makes it competitive with driving the same corridor.
Between the two ends, trains call at Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach. If your Florida splits into two bases, those four stops turn the middle of the trip into something you can do without holding a rental car for the days you do not need it.
Departures run about every two hours. Generous for a planned day, thin for a missed one: arrive late for your slot and the next chance is most of a morning away. On a departure day, when the flight time is fixed and the bags are already packed, book the earlier train rather than the tight one.
No ticket price appears here. Brightline prices by date and by class, so a figure that looks right in September will not be the figure you pay in March. Do you need a car in Orlando?
Frankly, it depends on how far your days spread. LYNX is a genuine three-county network on fixed routes and timetables, not a door-to-door service, and our source documents the fares and that tri-county scope rather than which route reaches which gate at which hour. Read the route map against your actual address before you decide to skip the rental. A party of five with car seats and a late dinner reservation is the classic case where the car wins, as the getting-around guide argues for the state as a whole.
Hotel and resort shuttles are the gap we cannot fill with numbers. Frequency, first and last runs, whether the ride is free, whether it serves both airports: none of that sits in our sources, and it changes by property and by season. Ask the hotel in writing before you arrive, then ask again at check-in for the departure-day timetable, which is the one that decides what time you leave the room.
Is Orlando on Eastern time?
Yes. Florida is split by statute, and the line is the Apalachicola River. Everything east of it, Orlando included, runs on Eastern time. That is 49 CFR 71.5(f), the federal rule rather than local habit, which is why your arrival board and your phone will agree the moment you land at MCO.
The western Panhandle is the exception. Pensacola, Destin and Panama City keep Central time, an hour behind. A short hop from the 30A beaches to Orlando swallows an hour on paper and hands it back on the way home. Before those flights, check that your rental pickup, your shuttle slot and your dinner booking were all made in the zone you thought you were in.
