Orlando in January: Weather, Crowds, Prices and Things to Do

Orlando’s January afternoons average 71.8°F at the airport, and its dawns average 49.5°F. Pack for both: a jacket at the park gate, short sleeves by lunch, a fleece again once the sun drops at 5:51 p.m. North of town the springs hold their water in the mid-70s, and Blue Spring State Park turns into the winter manatee spring.

January also sits outside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30, and ahead of March, when family school holidays fill the theme parks. The trade is a cooler vacation: four days of measurable rain in an average January, 1.1 nights at or below freezing, and afternoons about three degrees cooler than February’s.

Our climate source is NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information: the official 1991–2020 monthly normals for station USW00012815, a real thermometer at Orlando International Airport. A reanalysis grid cell, the ERA5 kind many weather apps quote, averages a whole square of land and can differ from a station on cold nights. Every figure here is the airport’s: an average high of 71.8°F, an average low of 49.5°F and 2.48 inches of precipitation across the month.

Measurable rain, at least 0.10 inch, falls on 4.0 days in an average January, roughly one day in eight. A proper soaker of an inch or more turns up 0.7 times per January, about seven such days for every ten Januaries. Keep one flexible day in a four-night stay and a wet forecast moves a park day instead of canceling it.

Between the 49.5°F dawn and the 71.8°F afternoon lies a 22.3-degree swing, and it fits inside a single park day. Pack a fleece or packable puffer, long pants, a short-sleeved layer to wear underneath, closed shoes for the chilly first hour and a compact umbrella for those four wet days. Swimsuits still go in the bag.

On January 15 Orlando gets about 10 hours 34 minutes of daylight. Sunrise comes at 7:17 a.m. and sunset at 5:51 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, converted from the 12:17 and 22:51 UTC of the source calculation. For spring outings, arrive by mid-morning and be back at the car before 5:30 p.m. so the last stretch of boardwalk is walked in daylight.

How warm is Orlando in January?

January air at the airport station averages 71.8°F in the afternoon and 49.5°F at dawn, a 22.3-degree gap. Orlando has no coastline, and we verified no sea-surface figure for January, so we print none. If you check a sea table for a beach day on the coast, many are built from daily maximum readings, a little warmer than a 24-hour mean. The water we can vouch for is fresh: the USGS gauge at Wekiwa Springs read 75.6°F on September 11, 2026, nearly four degrees above the average January afternoon.

Wear the jacket for a 9 a.m. park queue and expect to carry it by 2 p.m. At the springs you can swim through January, because the water keeps its temperature while the air cools, and the plunge feels warmer than the walk from the parking lot. We could not verify which hotels heat their pools, so ask yours before counting on a swim at the resort.

At the airport station, 1.1 nights in an average January fall to 32°F or below. Most trips see none, some see one or two. Check the forecast in the week you fly, and if a freezing night lands in your dates, plan an indoor morning and move the spring swim to the afternoon, once the sun has been up a few hours.

How busy is Orlando in January? Crowds and prices

January falls after the hurricane season closes on November 30 and before March, when family school holidays fill the theme parks and college spring break weighs on the beach towns instead. We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate series for Orlando, so we crown no week of the year the cheapest. January is low season for storms, and it comes ahead of the spring school push.

Disney and Universal price tickets dynamically by date. A ticket figure written today would be wrong within weeks, so we print none. Open the operators’ calendars for your exact dates before you lock in a flight, since a shift of a day or two can move the ticket line. We found no booking-lead data for Orlando hotels either, so we name no number of weeks to book ahead.

Orange County, where Orlando and the parks sit, levies a 6.0% transient rental tax on stays, filed and paid alongside Florida’s 6% state sales tax. Together that adds at least 12% to the room rate. Budget the room line with that 12% already on it, and compare hotels on the taxed total.

If one line deserves extra dollars, make it the airport. Orlando has two commercial airports: MCO boarded 27,859,783 passengers in 2024, the busiest in Florida and ahead of Miami, while Sanford (SFB) boarded 1.4 million. SFB lies north of MCO, and we could not verify its distance or drive time to the parks because the airport’s site blocked our reads. Before taking a cheaper Sanford fare, price the ground leg to your hotel. Routes and airlines are in our Florida flights guide.

Things to do in Orlando in January

Blue Spring State Park, where manatees gather in winter · Illustration

Winter is manatee season at the springs. Water rising from the Upper Floridan aquifer stays relatively warm while the rivers around it cool, so manatees gather at and near the springs in the winter months. Blue Spring State Park, near Orange City, is the winter manatee spring, and a January visit lines up with the reason people drive there. Getting in the water with them is a separate question with its own rules, covered in our manatee swimming guide.

The state’s 2024 facilities inventory counts the essentials. Blue Spring has 187 parking spaces, 3,050 feet of boardwalk, three observation platforms and six cabins. Wekiwa Springs State Park, the nearest spring to Orlando, has 325 spaces, one swimming area, one canoe, kayak and tube launch, 15.9 miles of paddling trail, 13.7 miles of hiking trail and 1,435 feet of boardwalk. Silver Springs State Park, home of the glass-bottom boats, is far bigger: 1,686 spaces and three launches. Lake Louisa State Park adds a swimming area, five launches and 20 cabins.

USGS gauges read 75.6°F at Wekiwa, 75.0°F at Rock Springs (the tubing run at Kelly Park, north of Orlando) and 74.3°F at Blue Spring on September 11, 2026, and spring temperatures do not move with the month. January’s air does. Against a 49.5°F dawn, Wekiwa’s water runs 26 degrees warmer, and by the 71.8°F afternoon the gap shrinks to under four. The colder the river gets, the stronger the pull of the spring run for manatees.

We could not verify entrance fees, opening hours or a manatee count for any of these parks: the Florida state parks site refused our reads, and we found no per-spring manatee figure. So we list nothing as free. Check each gate fee on the official site before you go. The lots are small, with 325 spaces at Wekiwa, 187 at Blue Spring and 30 at Rock Springs Run State Reserve, and the popular springs turn cars away on summer mornings, so an early start is a safe habit in any month.

Orlando in January: a two-day itinerary

Give day one to the springs. Set off around the 7:17 a.m. sunrise with the jacket on and reach Blue Spring State Park while the air still sits near its 49.5°F average low. Walk the 3,050-foot boardwalk and its three observation platforms, then drive to Wekiwa Springs for the warmest hours, when the average high reaches 71.8°F and the 75.6°F spring is the easier swim. Be back on the road by 5:30 p.m., ahead of the 5:51 p.m. sunset.

Day two goes to a theme park, with hours set by the operator and varying by date. Wear the jacket for the first hour and plan dinner indoors after dark. If rain is forecast for the park day, trade the two days. For downtown, LYNX runs buses across Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties: a ride costs $2.00, a transfer is free, and the $4.50 All-Day Pass must be requested from the operator before any money goes in the farebox. It runs from 4:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. the next day. SunRail’s schedule names no airport or theme-park station. More routes are in getting around Florida.

Orlando in January vs December and February

NOAA normal, 1991–2020 December January February
Average high 73.8°F 71.8°F 74.9°F
Average low 52.9°F 49.5°F 52.4°F
Precipitation 2.48 in 2.48 in 2.04 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 3.7 4.0 3.8

Measured at the same airport thermometer over the same 1991–2020 period, January comes out coolest. Its 71.8°F average high sits 2.0 degrees under December’s 73.8°F and 3.1 under February’s 74.9°F. Nights drop further, to 49.5°F against 52.9°F and 52.4°F. December and January both total 2.48 inches of precipitation, February 2.04, and the days with 0.10 inch or more run 3.7, 4.0 and 3.8. We hold no sea figure for any of the three months, and the spring gauges read the same whatever the month.

Shift four weeks earlier into December and you gain 3.4 degrees on the average low for the same 2.48 inches of rain. Four weeks later, February adds 3.1 degrees to the afternoon and 2.9 to the night, with 0.44 inch less rain. Either shift trades away January’s cooler park days, and February sits a step closer to March, when family school holidays fill the parks.

Is January a good time to visit Orlando?

Yes, for park days walked in a jacket rather than a sweat, for travelers who want the manatees at Blue Spring, and for anyone flying in from a northern winter who counts 71.8°F as warm. No, if the vacation is built around a hotel pool or long evenings outside: dawn averages 49.5°F, and 1.1 nights in an average January reach freezing.

If the answer is no, pick February. Afternoons average 74.9°F and nights 52.4°F, precipitation drops to 2.04 inches, the lowest of the three months, and the calendar still sits ahead of March’s school-holiday crowds in the parks.

January is the coolest of the three winter months for walking a park, at a 71.8°F average high, in the same season the manatees crowd the springs.

The last word

Book the Blue Spring morning before the park tickets: the manatee gathering is the part of an Orlando trip tied to winter. And if Orlando is only half the vacation, Brightline links it to Miami via West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Aventura, about 235 miles in roughly three and a half hours, with departures about every two hours. Fares move by date and class, so price the train with your flights and give Miami a few nights of its own.
