2 weeks in Portugal: the north-to-south route

Days 1–3 · Porto. As in the 10-day route: the Ribeira and the bridge at dusk, the tiled city, Gaia’s lodges, but with a third day that breathes (the Serralves museum and gardens, the Foz seafront tram, a second cellar without guilt).

Day 4 · Sleep in the Douro. The fortnight’s first dividend. Train to Pinhão, quinta visit (harvest almanac in season), and the night at a wine estate as the day boats leave: the valley at 8pm belongs to about forty people, and you’re one of them.

Day 5 · Coimbra. Train down via Régua, afternoon and evening in Portugal’s Oxford: the Joanina library’s gilded rooms, students in black capes, fado sung differently (by men, to the city). One night is the right dose.

Days 6–9 · Lisbon, with Sintra inside. The capital’s three classic days plus breathing room and the Sintra day done at dawn discipline.

Days 10–14 · The car, and the south unhurried. Collect at Lisbon airport: Évora and the bone chapel, then the fortnight’s second dividend (a night toward the coast at Comporta’s rice-field beaches or deeper into the wine towns), then over the hills to the Algarve with time for both faces: the eastern lagoons for the warm swim and the westward run to Sagres, where Europe ends at a lighthouse on sixty-meter cliffs. Out via Faro, forty minutes from the last beach.

2 weeks vs 10 days in Portugal

The Douro night converts the valley from excursion to experience; it is the single most-cited regret of ten-day alumni. Coimbra fills the gap between the capitals with the country’s academic soul — skipping it is how everyone learns it deserved a stop. The Alentejo’s second evening lets the region do its real work, which happens at cork-oak sunset speed, not lunch-stop speed.

The Algarve’s west end (Sagres, the Costa Vicentina’s wild edge) adds the dramatic coast the resort strip never shows. Note what two weeks deliberately does not buy: Madeira or the Azores. The islands are flights and philosophies of their own; bolting them on turns a deep fortnight into a shallow month.

Slower (the three-anchor version): drop Coimbra and the Douro night, run Porto 4 · Lisbon 5 · south 5 with the same car block: two fewer packings, same country.

Faster metabolism: reclaim day 3 from Porto and day 11 from Comporta, and buy a Madeira long-weekend… and reread the islands warning first.

No car at all: possible at fourteen days as at ten (rail to the Tavira-side Algarve, Évora by coach as a day trip), with the same two concessions the all-rail section spells out.

Winter fortnight: flip the weight north (cities, cellars, storm-watching), shrink the Algarve block, and read the 12-month verdict before committing the south to December hopes.

The fortnight’s booking list barely grows from the ten-day version: open-jaw flights, both rail legs at 60 days, Pena and Jerónimos slots, the day-10 car (airport pickup, briefing read), and now, the one true addition, the Douro quinta bed, which sells out furthest ahead of anything on this page, harvest season doubly so. Comporta’s fashionable corners deserve a reservation in summer; everything else on the route walks up.

Two weeks is Portugal at the pace the country itself keeps: long lunches survive, detours get taken, and the trip develops the thing tighter schedules never allow — favorite places you didn’t plan. Follow the line south, sleep where the ten-day version only visits, and come home with the rarest souvenir in modern travel: the sense that you finished.
