Florida in October: Weather by Region, Hurricane Season and Sea Temperature

On October 15 the sun sets over Tampa Bay at 7:01 p.m. and over Miami at 6:54 p.m., and both cities are still posting average highs in the mid-80s. What separates them is the rain gauge. Tampa’s October normal is 2.34 inches of rain. Miami’s is 7.65, better than three times as much water on the other side of the same peninsula.

October closes Florida’s wet season. The dry stretch opens on November 1 and runs through April, so this month sits on the hinge: an ocean at bathwater temperature, a hurricane calendar still open until November 30, and a rainfall map that splits the state down the middle rather than north to south.

The normals below come from six NOAA stations, one per region, because a single statewide temperature for Florida would be fiction: fifteen degrees separate a Key West night from a St. Augustine night this month. City-level detail sits in the Miami and Key West guides.

Florida weather in October: temperatures and rainfall by region

The gap that matters in October is nocturnal. Key West holds an average low of 76.8°F while the northeast coast drops to 61.5°F, better than fifteen degrees of difference inside one state line. Daytime highs barely argue: 80.9°F up north against 85.8°F at the end of the Keys. Every figure here is an official NOAA 1991-2020 monthly normal from a named station, not a model grid, and the northeast line comes from the Jacksonville International gauge, the closest one to St. Augustine.

Read the six cities as a single line and the rain does the sorting: Tampa’s 2.34 inches and Orlando’s 3.46 against Fort Lauderdale’s 7.37 and Miami’s 7.65. Key West lands in between at 5.67, and St. Augustine at 4.03. October is a wet month in the southeast corner and a fairly dry one on the central Gulf.

Wet days give the shape of an actual day. The Miami International gauge logs 9.0 days at or above a tenth of an inch and 2.0 days at an inch or more, so roughly twenty October days pass with nothing measurable. Tampa logs 4.4 and 0.6. The water usually arrives as an afternoon block of an hour or two rather than a gray day, and beach mornings hold.

Day-to-night spread splits the state the same way. Orlando swings 18.5 degrees between its 84.7°F high and its 66.2°F low, St. Augustine 19.4, while Key West moves only 9.0. So: a long-sleeve layer for inland and northern evenings, nothing at all for the Keys, where the night stays in the high 70s. Indoor air conditioning justifies that layer more often than the sky does.

Daylight is nearly identical across the peninsula on October 15, from 11 hours 29 minutes at St. Augustine to 11 hours 37 minutes at Key West. Miami runs 7:18 a.m. to 6:54 p.m. Eastern time, Tampa takes its sunset at 7:01 p.m. An Everglades boardwalk therefore wants to start at four, not five.

Is October in Florida’s dry season or wet season?

October belongs to the wet season. Statewide the dry season runs November through April and the wet one May through October, the dates used across our twelve-month verdict. This is the last of the wet six, with the dry stretch opening on November 1.

In practice an October afternoon in the south gets interrupted rather than canceled. Miami’s monthly total of 7.65 inches sits well below June’s 10.51 at the same gauge and well above January’s 1.83, so the machinery is winding down and not yet stopped. Put the boat, the reef and the park queue in the morning, and treat two o’clock onward as negotiable.

The Atlantic hurricane season is a calendar, not a forecast: June 1 to November 30, statistical peak on September 10, most activity between mid-August and mid-October. The first half of October falls inside that active window and the second half runs out of it. That is the whole of what the calendar states, and it says nothing about your particular week.

Book accordingly. Take refundable or cancellable rates for anything in the first three weeks, read the National Hurricane Center in the days before you fly, and expect a named storm to rearrange airports and rental fleets rather than one beach afternoon. We hold no verified probability for a given week, and neither does anyone selling you a room.

Can you swim in Florida in October? Sea temperature by coast

Yes, and the Atlantic side takes the month. The sea off Miami and Fort Lauderdale averages 84.5°F and Key West 84.2°F, while the Gulf off Tampa runs 79.7°F and the northeast coast off St. Augustine 77.9°F. Nearly seven degrees separate the two ends of that list. All five are swimmable without a second thought, but only the southeast reads as genuinely warm water.

A nuance about the measurement. Those sea figures are means of DAILY MAXIMA over 2015 to 2024, drawn from the Open-Meteo marine series, so they run a shade warmer than a 24-hour average. Morning water feels cooler than the number promises, and none of them are NOAA normals like the air temperatures above.

How busy is Florida in October?

October sits ahead of the wave. Florida’s demand year peaks across the winter and spring stretch, February through April, on hotel market data rather than an official series, and the dry season that fuels it does not open until November 1. The month therefore runs on the tail of the wet season with school calendars back in session.

For booking, the practical consequences are narrow. Rooms in Key West and on Miami Beach are easier to secure before November 1 than after it, and the Everglades needs planning around its geography: the park’s three entrances and the Flamingo Visitor Center each sit at least an hour’s drive apart, so the bed decides the trail. Keep the rate cancellable and the storm window stops costing money.

What cannot be measured here deserves saying out loud. No monthly visitor count by region was verified, no occupancy figure per city, no theme-park attendance series. Local weekends still swing on event calendars and school breaks that move year to year. Anyone quoting you an October crowd percentage for the state invented it.

Things to do in Florida in October

October offers a pairing the dry season cannot: an ocean at 84.5°F with November already in sight. The flip side is inland water. Named and priced: Everglades National Park charges $35 per private vehicle for seven days. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, in Coconut Grove inside the City of Miami, opens Wednesday to Monday from 9:30 a.m. with last admission at 4:30 p.m., closed Tuesdays, $20 for adults during restoration work and $5 for children 6 to 12. The Perez Art Museum is free Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m. and all day on the second Saturday. Miami Beach’s trolley is free, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., about every 20 minutes.

Where to go in Florida in October

The central Gulf takes the month on the numbers. Tampa records 2.34 inches of rain over 4.4 wet days with an 85.6°F high, the least interrupted line in the state, and Gulf water still reads 79.7°F. Add the powder sand south of the bay, starting with Siesta Key, and October becomes the Gulf’s month by default.

The southeast loses, and it loses for one specific traveler: whoever has a fixed seven-day beach week and no flexibility in it. Miami’s 7.65 inches over 9.0 wet days and Fort Lauderdale’s 7.37 over 7.9 will interrupt that week. For a trip built on museums, food and a warm ocean the same figures barely register, and Miami hands you 84.5°F water months before its winter peak.

The Keys follow neither the north nor the center. Key West records 5.67 inches over 7.6 wet days, less than Miami, and an average low of 76.8°F means the night never cools: no layer, no jacket, no relief. Sea at 84.2°F makes the reef easy, while the Dry Tortugas ferry lives or dies on sea state rather than rainfall. That is a different gamble.

One line, if that is all you take: Gulf side for dry days, southeast and the Keys for the warmest water, and split the week if you want both. Crossing the peninsula by car runs roughly four hours (est.), so the split costs a single morning of driving.

Florida in October vs September and November

Set against its neighbors, October is defined by dates more than by degrees. It is the final wet month and it carries the tail of the active storm window that peaked on September 10. November 1 opens the dry season, November 30 shuts the hurricane calendar. For the temperature and rainfall normals of those two months, the figures belong in the twelve-month verdict: we have not verified their 1991-2020 values for publication.

Shift four weeks later and you gain both calendar changes at once, dry air and a closed storm season, while handing back an ocean in the mid-80s at the southeast beaches. Shift four weeks earlier and you land on the September 10 peak with the same 84.5°F water. The trade is water temperature against calendar certainty, and nothing else moves much.

By profile: swimmers and reef divers should take October and accept a cancellable booking. Families tied to a November school break get drier air and cooler water, which is a fair swap with young children in the group. Anyone who wants the dry season and a shut hurricane calendar together should look at December onward, when Miami’s rainfall is heading toward January’s 1.83 inches.

Is October a good time to visit Florida?

Yes for two travelers: whoever wants an ocean at 84.5°F, and whoever is heading for the central Gulf, where 2.34 inches over 4.4 wet days is close to a dry-season line. No for anyone who needs a locked itinerary inside the June 1 to November 30 hurricane season, and no for the Everglades wildlife spectacle, at its best in the dry months.

If that lands as a no, aim at the dry season proper. December through April clears both calendars at once, dry season open and hurricane season shut, with Miami holding 76°F winter days and the Everglades’ water falling toward its wildlife peak.
