Where to Go in June: 15 Trips, From Crete and the Algarve to Patagonia’s Winter

The same two weeks of June buy a trip in the high 30s or a trip past 100°F, depending which way you fly. Book Patagonia and the afternoons average 36.3°F with the trekking season shut. Book Upper Egypt and those same afternoons average 104.6°F, with 0.00 inches of rain in the monthly record. The other thirteen options here sit between those two boarding gates.

One date organizes the month: the solstice, on the 20th or 21st. Fly north and it pays in light, 21 hours 18 minutes at Iceland on June 15. Fly south and Patagonia gets 8 hours 6 minutes. Two seasons are already running by the time you land: Japan’s tsuyu, the early-summer rain front over Kyoto, and the Yucatán’s wet months. Two have not begun: the August crush on Crete’s beaches, and the peak-summer heat that makes Lisbon’s hills an evening-only proposition.

Where is it driest in June? the Algarve, Crete and San Diego

Dry in June is an Atlantic and Mediterranean story, and it is countable: the Algarve records half a rain day in an average June, Crete 0.7, San Diego 0.1. A rain day here means at least 0.10 inch of measured precipitation, so those figures describe months in which a shower is a non-event rather than a change of plan.

All four of these work as short trips with a rental car for two or three of the days, and three of the four sit on water warm enough to swim in without ceremony. San Diego is the exception, and its June ocean temperature is the reason.

The Algarve

The Atlantic here reads 66.9°F as a mean of daily maxima, brisk on entry and fine after ten minutes of arguing with yourself. Lifeguard coverage follows a legal calendar rather than the thermometer, and the dates for each stretch of coast are in the Algarve in June. The flight is roughly 7 hours nonstop from the East Coast (est.), via Lisbon otherwise.

Crete

Getting there costs a connection, 11 hours or more from the East Coast via Athens or a European hub (est.).

San Diego

One rain day in ten Junes, 0.05 inches for the month: nothing here is drier. On a domestic ticket and a four-night stay (est.), that means Balboa Park, La Jolla and a taco crawl with no backup plan carried anywhere.

The nights stay cool for the latitude, 62.6°F, and the Pacific is cooler still at 66.7°F. Pack a jacket for Coronado after dinner, and do not promise the children the kind of swim the Yucatán hands over at 86.0°F.

Lisbon

June hands Lisbon walking weather: 74.8°F afternoons, 0.42 inches of rain across the month, and nearly fifteen hours of daylight for a city built on seven hills. Four nights (est.) covers the center, Belém and a train to Sintra, and the same trip in the hottest weeks of the year is a different, more indoor animal. Where does it rain most in June? Costa Rica, Kyoto and the Yucatán

The wet side of June is a trade rather than a warning label. Costa Rica’s 19.8 rain days come with a sea at 86.3°F and forests at their loudest, and Kyoto’s 11.6 come with moss gardens doing what they were designed to do.

Three trips, three different kinds of rain: an afternoon system in Guanacaste, a stationary front over Kansai, and Caribbean showers on the Yucatán that arrive with 78.3°F nights. Booking any of the three in June means building the days around mornings and keeping one indoor half-day in reserve.

Costa Rica

Kyoto

The Yucatán

Is June too hot for Upper Egypt? 104°F and no rain at all

Upper Egypt is the one trip here a thermometer can disqualify: average highs of 104.6°F at Luxor’s latitude, and 0.00 inches of rain in the monthly normal.

The month stays playable from first light to about 10am, then again after five. Karnak at opening, the Valley of the Kings before the coaches, the Nile from a felucca at dusk, four nights across Luxor and Aswan (est.) with the middle of every day behind shutters. It stops being playable for anyone traveling with toddlers, with a heart condition, or on a tour that will not move its start to 6am. Cairo is the connection, and the leg from the US runs 11 hours or more (est.).

Warm places in the US in June: Zion, Sedona, Savannah and Charleston

The domestic map in June splits by moisture rather than by temperature: Zion and Sedona each record 0.4 rain days before the Southwest’s summer storm season arrives, while Savannah and Charleston post more than eight and never dry out overnight.

Zion

Savannah

Where is it winter in June? Patagonia, Sydney and Cape Town

South of the equator June is winter, and it comes in three grades: Patagonia at 36.3°F with 8h 06m of light, Sydney at 61.3°F, Cape Town at 62.4°F in the rainiest stretch of its year.

Patagonia

Nothing here is colder, and June is not the month for the trekking that fills El Chaltén in January. Eight-hour days turn this into a short glacier-and-town stay, four nights (est.) out of El Calafate with Perito Moreno as the anchor. Most routings come through Buenos Aires, where June averages 58.0°F, mild enough to justify two nights (est.) on the way through.

Sydney

Australian winter here means 5.4 rain days, 2.57 inches, and 61.3°F afternoons: jacket weather for the harbor rather than towel weather. The sea still reads 67.6°F, warmer than San Diego’s June ocean, so the surfers never left. About 15 hours in the air from Los Angeles (est.) makes ten nights (est.) the sensible floor, and the Bondi-to-Coogee walk is comfortable at noon in a way January never allows.

Cape Town

Best June destinations for beaches, canyons or winter sun

For a swim every day with the smallest chance of a lost afternoon, Crete: 85.3°F, 0.7 rain days, a 75.9°F sea. The Algarve delivers the same near-zero rain at 75.4°F in a cooler ocean, on a flight of about 7 hours from the East Coast (est.) instead of a connection.

On a domestic ticket, Zion and Sedona at 0.4 rain days each are the driest pair in the country this month, on the condition that the walking is done by 9am. San Diego gets you the same certainty without the hiking, at 71.7°F and one rain day in ten Junes, and the Southeast trades that dryness for an 80°F ocean.

The ones to postpone: Costa Rica and Kyoto if the itinerary has no give in it, Upper Egypt if 104.6°F ends the conversation, Patagonia unless a glacier at 36.3°F is precisely the point. Where to go in June: the Algarve, Crete or San Diego

Averages hide the shape of a day. Kyoto’s 11.6 rain days are not eleven ruined afternoons, and Costa Rica’s 19.8 count every day reaching 0.10 inch, including the ones that clear by four. They also hide the sea’s lag: Sydney’s 67.6°F water beats San Diego’s 66.7°F in the middle of an Australian winter. The last word

If June comes down to one booking, make it Crete: 85.3°F, a 75.9°F sea and 0.7 rain days is the widest margin here between what a beach week promises and what it risks. One figure held back until now argues for the opposite hemisphere. Iceland records 9.6 rain days and 54.8°F highs in June, wet and cool by any standard, and still hands over 21 hours 18 minutes of daylight on the 15th, enough to drive the south coast to Vík and back inside what the calendar insists on calling one evening.
