Where to Go in August: 14 Trips, from San Diego and Crete to Patagonia in Winter

An August vacation splits into two trips that share nothing but a page of the calendar. Fly to Upper Egypt and the afternoon reads 105.0°F, with 0.00 inches of rain for the entire month. Fly to Patagonia the same week and the high is 37.4°F, with 6.2 days wet enough to change a plan. That is a 68-degree spread between two ways of spending the same fortnight off work, and neither one is a mistake.

The fixed points this month are astronomical. On August 15, a trip to Iceland still gets 16 hours 28 minutes of daylight while Patagonia is down to 9 hours 58 minutes, so one itinerary books evenings and the other books mornings. The sea off Crete averages 82.0°F, warm enough that swimming rather than sightseeing becomes the shape of the day. Where is it driest in August? San Diego, the Algarve and Crete

Four trips on this list are close to rain-proof. San Diego records 0.01 inches across August, the Algarve 0.08, Lisbon 0.17 and Crete 0.21, all of them under a quarter inch for the month.

Heat and water separate them. Crete pairs 88.0°F afternoons with an 82.0°F sea, so the trip organizes itself around swimming. San Diego holds 77.3°F days over a 71.3°F ocean, and Portugal’s two coasts sit in between, with Atlantic water in the mid-60s that shortens most swims to a quick one.

This is the trip you book when nobody in the party can absorb a lost day. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals give the city 0.01 inches of August rain and 0.0 days reaching even a tenth of an inch. Five nights (est.) covers the beaches, Balboa Park and a day out across the county, and the whole thing stays domestic: no passport, no connection, no jet lag from the West Coast.

The Algarve

Lisbon

Is August too hot for Upper Egypt and the Southwest?

Zion

Fly into Las Vegas, drive about 2¾ hours (est.), and give the park three nights (est.).

Sedona

Sedona sits three degrees hotter than Zion at 88.7°F and takes more than twice the rain, 1.17 inches over 2.9 days. On a red-rock trip that means storm-watching from a terrace about as often as hiking through the middle of the day. Phoenix is the airport, roughly two hours away by car (est.), and two nights (est.) bolt neatly onto a Zion week.

Where does it rain most in August? Costa Rica, the Yucatán and Kyoto

Three trips here carry serious August rain, and the totals are not comparable to a damp week in Europe. Costa Rica takes 8.47 inches, the Yucatán 5.76 and Kyoto 5.44.

For planning days out, the count of wet days matters more than the totals. Costa Rica logs 16.5 days at a tenth of an inch or more, the Yucatán 14.8 and Kyoto 9.2. Measured against San Diego’s 0.0, those are vacations of a different design, built around mornings and covered fallbacks.

In practice the day takes a shape. Book the boat, the canopy tour and any long drive before noon, and keep the afternoon for lodges, hot springs and the sound of rain on a tin roof. Seven nights (est.) is the minimum that absorbs two washed-out afternoons without wrecking the trip, and Miami to Liberia is about three hours in the air (est.).

The Yucatán

Kyoto

Mornings are the only reliably comfortable hours, so a five-night trip (est.) starts at Fushimi Inari before seven and saves the museums, the covered arcades and a slow lunch for the middle of the day. Osaka is roughly twelve hours from San Francisco (est.), plus a short train.

Where is it winter in August? Patagonia, Sydney and Cape Town

South of the equator, August closes the winter, and these three trips sit 25 degrees apart. Patagonia holds 37.4°F afternoons, Sydney 62.7°F and Cape Town 61.7°F, which turns one into an expedition and the other two into city weeks with a jacket.

Cape Town

Roughly fifteen hours nonstop from New York (est.), and seven nights (est.) leaves room for the weather to move around you.

Is August a good time for Iceland?

One northern trip is built for this month. Iceland offers 56.3°F days and 47.1°F nights, with 11.4 rain days as the standing cost of driving the ring road at all.

Light is what buys those days back: 16 hours 28 minutes on August 15, enough to drive the south coast, walk out to a glacier tongue and still reach a village pool before closing. August travel: crowds, storm season and heat by destination

Crowds are the constraint nobody prices in. European school holidays and Mediterranean beach weather land together this month, so Crete’s 0.5 rain days and the Algarve’s 0.2 come with company on every ferry, coast road and restaurant terrace. Storm risk is geographic rather than general. The Atlantic season covers the Yucatán and the Caribbean right through August, so a flexible fare and a clear cancellation policy do more for the trip than watching the forecast the week you fly. Heat is the constraint travelers underestimate on their own itinerary. And a mean stays a mean: Upper Egypt’s 105.0°F August contains plenty of afternoons above it, and that is what decides whether a Valley of the Kings morning ends at ten or at noon.

One booking here carries almost no weather risk: San Diego, at 0.01 inches and 0.0 wet days, with no passport and five nights a family can plan without a backup. Take it if August simply has to work. The far end of the swing is worth more, though. Patagonia gives you a 37.4°F afternoon, 9 hours 58 minutes of daylight, and the Buenos Aires connection on the way, where the city sits at a comfortable 60.2°F with 5.2 rain days of its own.
