April lands Madeira in its drier turn. At the Funchal station, the average April day tops out at 69.8°F and falls back to 58.8°F overnight, with 1.78 inches of rain spread over 4.7 days. That is two thirds of an inch less water than the island’s March normal, and the sea has come up to 68.0°F. None of this is tropical heat. What April sells is a walkable temperature and a light that now holds past eight in the evening.
One rule changed the arithmetic of a Madeira trip this year. Since January 1, 2026, every classified walking trail on the island, each PR-numbered levada and vereda, charges an access fee and requires a booking made online in advance. The levada morning that used to be a breakfast decision is now a half-hour slot with your name on it. The other line item worth knowing before you compare hotels is the Funchal city tax, set at EUR 2 per person per night.

A warning before the figures. Madeira is a mountain dropped into the Atlantic, and its April readings were taken at sea level in Funchal, on the sheltered south coast. Up at Areeiro the air is colder and the rain heavier, and the north coast keeps weather of its own. Anyone who packs for a ridge on a coastal reading will be cold by mid-morning. The source has a name: IPMA, the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, and its 1991-2020 normals for station 522 in Funchal, altitude 58.0 meters. That is a physical thermometer with three decades behind it, not a model grid cell interpolated from a reanalysis, and the distinction matters on the day a forecast app disagrees with a normals table. April’s readings there run 69.8°F by day, 58.8°F by night, 1.78 inches of rain across the month.
Rain shows up on 4.7 days in an average April, and only 1.2 of those deliver 10 mm or more, which is 0.39 inch, the amount that ends a walk. Mind the threshold: IPMA counts any day reaching 1 mm, or 0.04 inch, while American tables usually start counting at 0.10 inch, so the two columns are not interchangeable. Put differently, roughly one April day in six registers something, and four times out of six that something stays light.
Eleven degrees separate the average high from the average low, and the gap widens the moment you gain altitude. A morning that starts in a T-shirt on the Funchal seafront can finish with wind on a ridge at dusk. A fleece, a light shell for the 1.2 heavy days and shoes with real grip cover the month. Cotton alone does not.
On April 15 the island gets 13 hours 03 minutes of daylight. Sunrise falls at 07:36 and sunset at 20:38 in local time, which runs one hour ahead of UTC through the month. Dinner happens in daylight, and so does the drive back from a trailhead. That last point carries weight, because trail entry slots are only issued between sunrise and sunset.
Can you swim in Madeira in April? Sea temperature at 68.0°F
The sea surface off Madeira averages 68.0°F in April, from Open-Meteo’s marine dataset over 2015-2024. Read the figure the way it was built: it is a mean of daily maxima, not a 24-hour average, so it sits a shade above what the water actually gives you at seven in the morning. It stands 1.1°F over the March value and 1.9°F under May’s.
Sixty-eight degrees is swimmable without being comfortable, which is the plain reading for anyone whose reference is a Florida winter. Expect a sharp first minute, a decent twenty, then a genuine appetite for a towel. Children last less than adults do. A shorty wetsuit turns an April dip into an hour in the water, and it is the one piece of luggage that changes the month at sea level.

How busy is Madeira in April? Crowds, the city tax and booking rules
Where April falls in Madeira’s price year is a question we cannot answer with a sourced number. No monthly occupancy or hotel-rate index for the island sits in our material, and inventing a percentage would serve nobody. What can be dated is the fixed side of the bill: EUR 2 per person per night in Funchal, EUR 4.50 per person per classified trail, EUR 22 for a cable car return. The reservation you cannot skip is the trail one. A slot must be booked online through SIMplifica, the Regional Government’s digital services portal, and there is no second channel. It binds individual walkers, groups, and anyone walking with a tourism company alike. Entry runs in 30-minute slots issued between sunrise and sunset. The Monte wicker sledges work the opposite way and cannot be booked at all: tickets are sold on site, same day only.
Funchal’s Taxa Municipal Turística is EUR 2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights, so EUR 14 per guest at most. It applies to every paid overnight stay in the municipality whatever the booking channel, and the counter restarts after an interrupted stay, which catches travelers who break a Funchal week with two nights elsewhere. Exempt: children of 12 and under on production of an ID, visitors with a disability of 60 percent or more, and residents of the region on proof of tax address.
One upgrade genuinely changes April, and it is not the hotel room. Walking with a tourism company that holds a protocol with the IFCN drops the trail fee from EUR 4.50 to EUR 3 and hands the booking to somebody else. Things to do in Madeira in April: cable car, gardens and levada slots
April opens the Monte Palace Tropical Garden’s long timetable. From April through September it runs 09:00 to 19:00, an hour later than the 18:00 close it keeps from October to March. Trail slots stretch on the same logic, since they are issued between sunrise and sunset, and April 15 offers 13 hours 03 minutes to spread them across, somewhere near twenty-six half-hour starts by our arithmetic. The Funchal to Monte cable car costs EUR 22 return and EUR 16 one way, running 08:45 to 17:45 daily. Children up to 6 travel free, 7 to 14 pay half, and an e-ticket stays valid for 60 days, so it can be bought before the flight. At the top station on Caminho das Babosas, Monte Palace charges EUR 18 for adults, and its museum shuts at 17:00 even in April. Below, the wicker sledges run Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 18:00, at EUR 30 for one rider, EUR 40 for two, EUR 60 for three.
The free list is short, and padding it would be a disservice. Under-14s enter Monte Palace at no cost alongside an adult, school groups pay nothing, and the cable car carries under-6s free. Trails charge whoever you are, unless you live in the Autonomous Region. What April gives away instead is time: light until 20:38, and a garden open until 19:00 for the first month since September.
Madeira in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one takes the vertical. Be at the cable car for the 08:45 first cabin (EUR 22 return) and ride up before the line builds, then walk into Monte Palace at 09:00 while the light is still low, keeping the museum for the stretch before its 17:00 close. Sledge tickets go on sale on site from 09:00, same day only, and the office can shut early when the queue runs long. Come back down and eat late: sunset is at 20:38.
Day two belongs to the booked slot. PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes and PR 6.1 Levada do Risco were both open on September 8, 2026, as were PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro, PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo and PR 3.1 Caminho Real do Monte, while PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada and PR 4 Levada do Barreiro were restricted that day. Across the three months the movement runs one way. Afternoon highs read 69.1°F in March, 69.8°F in April, 71.6°F in May, so April buys under a degree on its predecessor. Rain is where the month earns its place: 2.45 inches, then 1.78, then 1.07, with wet days falling 5.8, 4.7, 3.3. The sea climbs 66.9°F, 68.0°F, 69.9°F on that same daily-maxima basis.
Push the trip four weeks later and you gain 1.9°F of water, 0.71 inch less rain and 1.4 fewer wet days, which is the case for May. Pull it four weeks earlier and March hands back 1.1 extra wet days and 0.67 inch more rain for much the same 69-degree afternoon. Nothing in that shift touches the trail fee, which has applied to all three months since January 2026.
Is April a good time to visit Madeira?
Yes for walkers, garden people and anyone who counts rain days: 4.7 of them, only 1.2 of them heavy, at 69.8°F, is a working month. No for swimmers who want warm water without neoprene, since 68.0°F is a mean of daily maxima and the morning sea reads under it. And no for travelers who like deciding a hike over breakfast, because the slot has to exist before the car leaves.
When the answer is no, take May instead. It runs 1.8°F warmer by day, drops rain to 1.07 inches over 3.3 days, and lifts the sea to 69.9°F, the gap between a swim and a plunge. What April alone holds: the first evenings of the year with the Monte garden open until 19:00 and the sun still up at 20:38, on a month whose rain total stays under two inches.
The last word
Book the trail slot before the flight and the rest of April behaves. Two clicks on SIMplifica, EUR 4.50 a head, a half-hour window you can build a morning around, and the walking stops depending on a lottery of forecasts. The cable car, for its part, runs every day of the year except December 25, so April costs you nothing in closures. Bring the fleece for the ridge and the shorty for the water, and let the 20:38 sunset take care of dinner.
