Bahamas Family Resorts: Atlantis, Baha Mar, Melia Nassau Beach and Club Med

A child in an inner tube drifts along a lazy river while a parent floats close behind with a cold drink, and a tall slide tower rises over the palms. Evenings bring a parade of costumes and drums at a marina bar, and the ferry terminal glows with lights. Families come to the big resorts of Nassau and Paradise Island, and to one quieter resort on San Salvador, for days that start at the pool and end at the table.

What are the family resorts in the Bahamas?

The family resorts in the Bahamas are a handful of large properties with water parks, children’s activities and many places to eat, most of them in Nassau and on Paradise Island, plus a Club Med on San Salvador that leans toward couples but keeps some family options. The Bahamas is an archipelago, so each resort belongs to one island, and choosing a resort largely means choosing an island.

Atlantis Paradise Island

Atlantis sits on Paradise Island, next to Nassau, and is the name most families know first. It is made up of five distinct hotels: The Cove, The Royal, The Coral, The Reef and Harborside Resort. Each has its own character. The Royal is the iconic tower of the resort, with adventures for thrill-seekers of any age, while The Cove aims at luxury and white-glove Bahamian service.

The Coral and Harborside Resort stand near the marina, with views of yachts and the ocean, and The Reef offers luxury residences for those who want the comforts of home with a view of a tropical paradise. Guests of every hotel are welcome to explore all of the experiences across the resort, so the choice of hotel is about mood and space rather than access. The resort is owned by Brookfield Asset Management and operated by Marriott International’s Autograph Collection Hotels.

Baha Mar on Cable Beach

Baha Mar stretches along Cable Beach in Nassau, on the island of New Providence, and brings three hotels together: Grand Hyatt, SLS and Rosewood. For families the draw is Baha Bay, the water park set on beachfront acreage right next to the resort, where resort guests have unlimited access.

The resort also keeps a busy calendar, which shapes the mood of a stay. The Bahamas Culinary & Arts Festival fills the resort from October 21 to 25, the Baha Mar Cup tennis event runs from December 10 to 13, and a New Year’s Eve celebration with a live performance by Ludacris closes the year. A casino with live sports betting is on site too, which is something for the adults of the party.

Melia Nassau Beach

Melia Nassau Beach is an all-inclusive resort in Nassau, and Meliá counts it among its family hotels as well as its all-inclusive ones. It suits parents who like to settle into one place and let meals and drinks be part of the stay. Meliá has offered free stays for up to two children at some of its hotels, and its rewards program lets members use points for rooms, restaurants and spas.

Club Med Columbus Isle, San Salvador

Club Med Columbus Isle lies on San Salvador, a long way from the crowds of Nassau. It is described as perfect for couples and adults seeking a romantic or serene getaway, though it does offer some family-friendly options. For families who prefer a calm base over a busy one, that mix can work, especially in July and August, when teenagers can join Junior Club Med.

What do families get at these resorts?

Families get water parks, a long list of restaurants and bars, organized activities and, at some resorts, evening entertainment, all within one property. The point of these places is that nobody has to leave for a day to find something to do or a table for dinner.

Water parks and slides

Aquaventure at Atlantis is a large water park with a focus on theming and attractions not typically found at local water parks. Its main features are The Current, a lazy river and raft ride hybrid, and a temple-style slide tower. Children can float for long stretches while older kids line up for the slides.

Baha Bay, at Baha Mar, plays a similar role on Cable Beach. It covers 15 beachfront acres, and because resort guests have unlimited access, a family can come and go through the day rather than treat it as a single outing. A morning at the park, a long lunch and a quiet afternoon in the room is an easy rhythm to build.

Eating and drinking

Atlantis counts 21 restaurants and 19 bars and lounges, so a week can pass without repeating a table. That range matters for families with different appetites, because picky eaters and adventurous ones can each find a menu.

At Melia Nassau Beach the all-inclusive format changes the way a day feels, since meals and drinks are folded into the stay. Families with children who snack constantly often find that simpler than watching a tab.

Evenings on Paradise Island

Margaritaville Bahamas is the only Margaritaville restaurant in the Bahamas, and it sits in the Ferry Complex at One Marina Drive on Paradise Island. It is a lively spot rather than a quiet one, with karaoke on Friday nights, a Junkanoo Rush Out every Friday with a parade, costumes and food and drink specials, and a Saturday night party with a live DJ and local Bucket beer.

Place Open
Margaritaville Bahamas Daily, 10am to midnight

Activities at Club Med

At Club Med Columbus Isle, 26 activities are included in the stay, and guests can discover 30 more on demand. Scuba diving costs extra, and the waterskiing and wakeboarding school runs only in summer. The airport on San Salvador is 5 minutes from the resort, though transfers are not automatically included in the package and can be arranged privately or with the resort.

Which islands suit families?

New Providence and Paradise Island, both in Nassau, suit families who want big resorts, water parks and many choices, while San Salvador suits those who want a quieter resort stay. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism lists hotels, mega resorts and fishing lodges across many more islands, including Grand Bahama, the Abacos, Eleuthera and Harbour Island, the Exumas, Bimini, Andros and Cat Island.

Nassau and Paradise Island

This is where the biggest family resorts cluster. Atlantis on Paradise Island, and Baha Mar and Melia Nassau Beach in Nassau, give families three very different feels: a sprawling resort with five hotels, a beachfront complex with three hotel brands, and an all-inclusive.

A stay here suits families with a range of ages, since a toddler, a ten-year-old and a teenager can each find something. It also suits parents who want evenings out, with casinos, bars and music close at hand. The Ministry of Tourism’s hotel search can be filtered by children’s activities, a spa, a golf course or a casino, which helps narrow the field.

San Salvador

San Salvador holds Club Med Columbus Isle, and the pace is slower than in Nassau. The resort leans toward couples and adults, but it has some family options, and teenagers can join Junior Club Med in July and August. A local clinic for regular treatments is 5 minutes from the resort, and the hospital is in Nassau, 1 hour’s flight away.

Because it is a single resort on a single island, it suits families who want everything in one place and do not mind a more remote setting. It is not the place for a family that wants a choice of restaurants or a water park next door.

Other islands to look into

The Ministry of Tourism lists lodging across Grand Bahama, the Abacos, Eleuthera and Harbour Island, the Exumas, Bimini, Andros and Cat Island. Each island is separated from the others by sea, so a family planning a trip to one of them is planning a different kind of vacation from a Nassau resort stay. The search tool allows a filter by nightly rate range and by Clean & Pristine Certified hotels, which can be a useful first cut.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so a trip in those months falls inside it, and a December visit comes just after it. Meliá has offered early booking discounts and free stays for children at some hotels, but those offers vary by property, so confirm what applies to the resort you choose. The Baha Mar calendar is busiest around its festival and the December events, and the World Series of Poker’s WSOP Paradise runs there from December 2 to 17.
