Bahamas Adults-Only Resorts: Sandals Royal Bahamian, Club Med Columbus Isle and Which Islands Have Them

Mid-afternoon at a swim-up bar, the only sounds are ice in glasses, a steel-drum track drifting from somewhere near the pool, and the low talk of couples with nowhere to be. That grown-up, unhurried version of a Bahamas vacation is what the adults-only resorts sell. In the islands it centers on Nassau, where a couples-only all-inclusive sits beside the water, with a more mixed, adult-leaning village farther out on San Salvador for travelers who want a quieter setting.

What are the adults-only resorts in the Bahamas?

In the Bahamas, an adults-only resort is above all Sandals Royal Bahamian in Nassau, a couples-only all-inclusive, with Club Med Columbus Isle on San Salvador as an adult-leaning alternative that is not strictly closed to families. The list is short, and that is worth knowing before you start comparing. Many hotels across the islands welcome all ages, so a true adults-only stay means choosing one of a few specific addresses.

What defines these places is the pace. There are no kids’ clubs to hear from the pool, no family buffet lines, and the evening mood leans toward candlelit dinners and a drink on the sand. Food and drinks are folded into one price, so the day moves from breakfast to pool to beach to dinner without a bill arriving at each stop.

Resort Island Who it welcomes What is included or on site
Sandals Royal Bahamian New Providence (Nassau) Adults only, designed for couples 10 specialty restaurants, 8 bars (3 of them swim-up), 7 pools, 5 whirlpools, unlimited food and drinks, water sports
Club Med Columbus Isle San Salvador Couples and adults, with some family options 26 activities included, 30 more on demand, scuba diving at an extra cost
Sandals Emerald Bay Great Exuma Closed August 15, 2024, becoming a family Beaches Resort Reopening date not announced

Sandals Royal Bahamian, Nassau

Sandals Royal Bahamian is the only Sandals resort in the Bahamas, and it is built for couples from the first step into the lobby. Everything is included without limit, from food and cocktails to premium liquors, and even the minibars in the rooms are covered. The restaurants are specialty dining rooms rather than one large buffet, so a week can run through several cuisines and several moods, from a relaxed lunch near the water to a dressier dinner.

The pools are the heart of daily life. Some of them have bars you reach by floating up in the water, and a number of rooms open straight onto the pool, with the highest level of swim-up suites adding Elite Butler service and private Rolls Royce airport transfers. For more privacy, the Island Village Villas pair tropical garden views with a private pool and butler service.

Water sports are part of the stay, and certified scuba divers can dive through the resort’s program, with free PADI diving among the inclusions. The Red Lane Spa offers treatments inspired by island tradition, and they are optional, so a spa afternoon is a choice and not a package you pay for up front. Guests who book a seven-night stay in certain Butler suites also receive a $250 credit to dine at select restaurants in Nassau, a good reason to leave the resort for one evening in town.

Barefoot Cay, the private island

A short boat ride from the resort takes guests to Barefoot Cay, the private offshore island that comes with a Royal Bahamian stay. It has two beaches, a spa and a zen garden, which makes it a change of scenery more than a second resort. You leave the main pools behind, step onto sand with fewer people around, and spend a day that feels one notch more remote than the mainland property.

It suits couples who like the idea of a castaway afternoon without giving up the comforts of an all-inclusive. The garden side of the island is for slowing down further, while the beaches are for lying out, wading and reading. Because it is a private island, the experience is tied to the resort, so it belongs on the plan of a Sandals stay rather than as a separate outing.

Club Med Columbus Isle, San Salvador

Club Med Columbus Isle sits on San Salvador, and it is described as perfect for couples and adults seeking a romantic or serene getaway, though it does offer some family-friendly options. That makes it adult-leaning rather than adults-only. The airport is a few minutes from the resort, but transfers are not automatically included in the package, so they are arranged separately, through private services or with the resort directly.

The style here is the Club Med one, a village where a long list of activities is already in the price and more can be added on demand. Waterskiing and the wakeboarding school run only in summer, and scuba diving carries an extra cost. Teenagers have their own Junior Club Med in July and August, so travelers who want the quietest version of the island may weigh the season.

Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma

Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma closed its doors on August 15, 2024, and it is not a place to book. The property is being transformed into a Beaches Resort, which means a family-friendly stay with kids and teen clubs, a water playground and new dining options.

It keeps the same beach and the golf course, but the adults-only feeling is gone, and the reopening date has not been announced. For a couples-only alternative with an offshore island, Sandals Royal Bahamian in Nassau, recently renovated, is the one to look at.

Who are they for?

Adults-only resorts are for couples and for grown-up travelers who want a vacation without children around and without the small decisions of paying for each meal and drink. The idea is simple. You arrive, settle in, and the days take care of themselves between the pool, the beach and the table. It is a different trip from exploring islands by boat or staying in a small guesthouse.

Couples, honeymooners and anniversaries

Sandals Royal Bahamian is designed for couples, and that shapes everything from the dining rooms to the pool bars. Honeymooners and anniversary trips are the natural fit. Dinners are a shared event, mornings can start late, and the private-pool villas and swim-up rooms give a couple the option to spend the day almost entirely on their own terrace.

The butler suites lean into the occasion. With butler service on the villas and the upper levels of the swim-up rooms, small things such as a drink delivered or a plan arranged are handled for you. If the trip is a celebration, that extra layer of attention is what many couples are paying for, along with the quiet.

Divers and water lovers

Water sports are a real part of the Royal Bahamian package, and certified divers can go out through the resort’s scuba program, with PADI diving among the inclusions. For people who plan a vacation around the sea, that means mornings underwater and afternoons by the pool without arranging a separate dive operator. The offshore island adds a beach day to the mix, reached by a short boat ride.

Club Med Columbus Isle takes a different approach, with a long menu of activities already included and more available on demand. Scuba diving there is paid for separately, and the waterskiing and wakeboarding school operates only in summer. Travelers who like to try a new sport each day, and who do not mind the odd teenager in the summer months, will find plenty to fill a week.

Travelers who want one price and no planning

An all-inclusive suits people who dislike the arithmetic of a vacation. At Sandals Royal Bahamian, meals, premium liquors, minibars and water sports are part of the stay, so you can order a second cocktail or try a specialty restaurant without a second thought. That relaxed approach is the whole point, and it works best for travelers who plan to spend most of their time on the property.

The trade-off is that the resort becomes your world. If you want to wander through the streets of Nassau, eat conch from a stand or explore other islands, the resort is a base, not the whole trip. The dining credit tied to certain Butler suite stays hints at this, nudging you to eat out in the city once.

Who should look elsewhere

Families will not find a welcome at Sandals Royal Bahamian, and Club Med Columbus Isle, though adult-leaning, offers some family options and a teen club in the summer. Families with children are better served by resorts that say so openly. The former Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma is heading that way, as a Beaches Resort with kids and teen clubs and a water playground.

Travelers who prefer small inns, fishing lodges or a house of their own will also want a different kind of stay. The islands’ hotel listings include mega resorts and fishing lodges as separate categories, and they can be filtered by features such as a spa, golf, a casino or children’s activities. An adults-only resort is one choice among many, built for one kind of trip.

Which islands have them?

Two islands carry the adults-only idea in the Bahamas: New Providence, where Nassau sits and Sandals Royal Bahamian is based, and San Salvador, home to the adult-leaning Club Med Columbus Isle. A third, Great Exuma, had a couples resort until it closed. Each island is its own world, separated by open sea, so the choice of resort is also a choice of the kind of island you want to wake up on.

New Providence and Nassau

Nassau is a city on the island of New Providence, and it is where Sandals Royal Bahamian is located. That puts a couples-only resort next to a real city, with its harbor, its markets and its restaurants, which is why the dining credit for certain Butler suite stays makes sense. You can spend a week behind the resort gates, or step out for a night in town and come back to the pool.

The island also holds the offshore side of the experience, since Barefoot Cay is reached by a short boat ride from the resort. For couples who want the best of both worlds, a city nearby and a private island within reach, New Providence offers the widest range of ways to spend a day.

San Salvador

San Salvador is the quiet choice. Club Med Columbus Isle is the resort here, with the airport a few minutes away, and it appeals to couples and adults looking for a romantic or serene getaway. The atmosphere is that of a self-contained village, with activities during the day and the evening unfolding at the resort rather than in a nearby town.

Because it is a smaller, more remote island, getting there takes more planning than Nassau, and transfers from the airport are arranged separately from the package. A local clinic for regular treatments is close to the resort, while a hospital is in Nassau, reached by air. For travelers who value seclusion, the island offers it.

Great Exuma and the other islands

Great Exuma has no adults-only resort to book. Sandals Emerald Bay closed and is becoming a family-friendly Beaches Resort, keeping its beach and golf course, with no reopening date announced. Elsewhere, the hotel listings for the islands cover Grand Bahama, the Abacos, Eleuthera and Harbour Island, the Exumas, Bimini, Andros and Cat Island, with hotels, mega resorts and fishing lodges, but they are listed as general stays and not as couples-only retreats.

Good to know before you go

The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.

An all-inclusive price covers food and drinks at the resort, but extras such as scuba diving at Club Med Columbus Isle and airport transfers on San Salvador are paid for separately. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so travelers planning a stay in those months should keep it in mind when choosing dates and flexible bookings. On Nassau, a short walk or taxi ride out of the resort is part of the fun, and the usual habits of a city apply there.
