Flights to Florida: All 15 Airports, 2024 Boardings and Which Region Each One Opens

Fifteen Florida airports sell scheduled seats, and most travelers can name three of them. The Federal Aviation Administration’s calendar year 2024 count also upends the ranking people carry in their heads: Orlando boarded 27,859,783 passengers, Miami 26,588,002. The state’s busiest runway serves the theme parks, not the beach.

The real price of a badly chosen airport is rarely the fare. It is the road that starts at the rental counter, and Florida is a long state. Three of the fifteen add a second surprise before you even land: they do not keep the same clock as Orlando, Tampa or Miami.

Land where your Florida is: MCO for the parks, MIA or FLL for the southeast, RSW or SRQ for the Gulf, and read the clock twice before booking PNS, VPS or ECP.

Think twice before: buying a small-airport seat with a hotel hours away, or reading a Panhandle departure time on an Eastern clock.

A boarding is one passenger stepping onto one aircraft, counted across a full calendar year, so the FAA table measures the airport rather than your trip. Where you land still decides which Florida sits within an hour of the curb. One reserve up front: we hold no verified list of which airlines or which departure cities serve each field, and those schedules turn over every season, so you will find none quoted here. What happens after baggage claim is covered in getting around Florida.

Four airports carry large-hub status. Orlando leads with 27,859,783 boardings in 2024, more than a million ahead of Miami’s 26,588,002. Fort Lauderdale follows at 17,096,131 and Tampa at 12,075,591, which puts two of the state’s four biggest fields within the same metropolitan sprawl of South Florida. Anyone who assumed Miami tops Florida aviation has been reading the postcards rather than the traffic data.

Below them sit three medium hubs: Fort Myers RSW at 5,425,293, West Palm Beach PBI at 4,127,211, and Jacksonville JAX at 3,749,791 for the northeast and St. Augustine. The eight small hubs spread the map wide. Sarasota SRQ and Clearwater PIE split the central Gulf beaches, Pensacola PNS, Valparaiso VPS and Panama City ECP cover the Panhandle, Sanford SFB adds a second Orlando field, Punta Gorda PGD serves Charlotte Harbor, and Key West EYW closes the list at 740,762.

Four metro areas run on more than one airport. South Florida has MIA and FLL, already compared above. Orlando has MCO and SFB. Tampa Bay pairs TPA at 12.1 million with PIE at 1.2 million. The southwest coast pairs RSW at 5.4 million with PGD at 1.0 million. In none of those pairs does the smaller field sit in the same suburb as the larger one, so a fare comparison only holds up once the drive is priced in. The regions themselves are laid out in our Florida orientation.

Which Florida airport for which trip: Miami, Orlando, Tampa or the Gulf

For the southeast, MIA sits about 12 miles from South Beach, a 20 to 45 minute drive depending on traffic. Fort Lauderdale FLL is roughly 25 miles out, 35 to 50 minutes on I-95, and it moved 17,096,131 passengers in 2024, so it is no minor alternative. On paper the two are interchangeable for a week in Miami. On the ground, the gap is thirteen extra miles of interstate at the end of a long travel day.

For the center, MCO is the default door to the parks and the busiest airport in the state. Sanford SFB is Orlando’s second commercial field, 1,412,954 boardings in 2024, and it lies north of MCO. We could not confirm its distance to the parks at the source, because the airport’s own site blocks connections from Europe, where we checked on September 8, 2026. Treat any drive time you are quoted as unverified and measure it before you commit. Nearby escapes are mapped in weekend getaways from Orlando.

On the Gulf, Fort Myers RSW at 5,425,293 is the practical arrival for Naples, Sanibel and the southwest. Sarasota SRQ at 2,112,417 puts you closest to Siesta Key and Sarasota itself. Clearwater PIE at 1,228,048 serves the Clearwater and St. Pete beach strip that TPA also covers. Punta Gorda PGD at 957,136 is the smallest of the four and lands you on Charlotte Harbor, between Sarasota and Fort Myers.

The Keys have their own airport. EYW boarded 740,762 passengers in 2024, the lowest total of the fifteen. Driving instead, MIA to Key West runs about 155 miles, of which the Overseas Highway accounts for 113 from Florida City. Allow close to four hours with no stops, six to eight with the bridges, the sandbars and lunch, which is the version most people actually want. Our road trip guide breaks the drive into legs.

Flying to the Panhandle: PNS, VPS and ECP are in the Central time zone

Three of the fifteen keep a different clock. Pensacola PNS, Valparaiso VPS and Panama City ECP sit in the Central time zone, while Orlando, Tampa, Miami and Jacksonville run on Eastern. Every boarding pass prints local time at its own airport, so a westbound flight to the Panhandle looks improbably quick and the return appears to swallow an hour. It is the same hour, twice, and it has cost people connections.

The boundary is written down. Under 49 CFR 71.5(f), the eastern zone line follows the Apalachicola River from the Georgia line, then the Jackson River, then the Intracoastal Waterway to the west line of Gulf County and south to the Gulf of Mexico. Everything west of that, including the Destin and South Walton beaches reached through VPS, is Central. Set your phone to the arrival airport before you build a connection around a departure time.

From Miami airport without a car: the $2.25 train and the airport bus

MIA is one of the few Florida arrivals that works with no rental at all. The MIA Mover links the terminals to the Miami Intermodal Center. From that station, the Metrorail Orange Line runs into Downtown Miami roughly every 15 minutes, from about 5 a.m. to midnight. One ride costs $2.25 however far you go, which makes the train cheaper than most airport coffees.

For the beach, Route 150, the Miami Beach Airport Express, leaves the airport Metrorail station for Mid Beach seven days a week, about every 30 minutes, at $2.25 each way, and the buses carry luggage racks. A single $2.25 fare puts a suitcase within walking distance of the sand, since transfers between Metrorail and Metrobus cost nothing. The wider transit picture, including the Brightline corridor, sits in getting around Florida.

When flights and hotels are cheapest in Florida

South Florida’s cheapest hotel months are also its storm months · Illustration

South Florida hotel rates bottom out from August to October and peak from February to April. That inversion is not a market quirk. The discount months and the storm months are the same months, and the industry prices them accordingly.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10, with most activity falling between mid-August and mid-October. Booking inside that window is entirely reasonable, on one condition: keep the hotel refundable and watch the tropics in the ten days before you fly. Month-by-month detail lives in the best time to visit Florida.

What the February premium buys is dry air, low storm risk and the season in which every outdoor plan holds. It does not buy a smaller tax line. Whenever you go, the bill carries a county transient rental tax of 0% to 6%, filed with the 6% state sales tax: 6% in Miami-Dade, 7% on Miami Beach, 5% in Monroe County for the Keys. Add that before you compare two quotes across county lines, and see what a Florida trip costs.

REAL ID for a domestic flight to Florida

Enforcement began on May 7, 2025. US travelers now need a REAL ID compliant license or another accepted document to board a domestic flight, and a passport is on the accepted list, which is the quickest workaround for anyone whose license has not been upgraded. Arriving at the checkpoint with no acceptable form of ID means a $45 fee and extra screening time you probably did not build into the morning. Related paperwork notes are collected in know before you go.

The last word

Buy the airport that shortens the drive you will actually make: MCO for the parks, MIA or FLL for the southeast, RSW or SRQ for the Gulf, EYW when the Keys are the whole point. One option deserves a look before you pay for two round trips to the same city. Brightline links Miami and Orlando with stations in between, which makes an open-jaw week workable, flying into one city and out of the other without a rental car in the middle. Its Miami terminus is downtown rather than at the airport, so budget the connection at each end. Its fares move with date and class, so check them the day you book.
