An hour or two out of Orlando puts you at a spring, an ocean, a fort or a manatee. Whether you get in is a separate question. Wekiwa Springs now takes a day-use reservation. Orange County counts 280 cars into Kelly Park in the morning. Playalinda Beach Road shuts half an hour before a rocket leaves the Cape, and the Blue Spring run is closed to swimmers all winter.
Each of those rules has an address: the Orange County park page and its information line, the Florida State Parks reservation system, the launch-viewing page for Canaveral National Seashore. Drive times below run as bands, since Friday evening traffic on I-4 moves them more than distance does.

Gate money at the Florida state parks is charged by the car: $4 for a single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle, and $5 to $8 for a vehicle carrying two to eight people, the exact figure set park by park. Orange County’s Kelly Park, the two federal sites and the Volusia beach ramps each price on their own schedule.

Under an hour gets Wekiwa Springs or Kelly Park, both close enough for a Saturday that starts and ends at home. About an hour reaches Blue Spring, Playalinda and the Volusia beaches, the band where one night away doubles the water time. Two hours (est.) is St. Augustine or Crystal River, and each wants a Saturday night booked. Past two and a half hours (est.), the Gulf beaches only work if you leave Friday and come home late Sunday.
A car leaving Orlando at 6 p.m. on a Friday reaches the coast after closing time. The Friday drive buys position rather than time on the water. You sleep near the entrance, eat in the car and are in the line when the gate opens at 8. Coming home on a Sunday evening, budget extra time for I-4 eastbound through the theme-park exits.
Two trips sold as Florida weekends do not survive a two-day plan from here. The Everglades charge $35.00 per private vehicle for seven days, and the three entrances and the Flamingo Visitor Center sit at least an hour’s drive apart from one another: the full guide and the season calendar treat it as its own trip. Springs near Orlando: which ones need a reservation
Florida state parks open at 8 a.m. and close at sundown, 365 days a year. At the springs inside an hour of Orlando, the parking runs out long before sundown does, and rangers close the gate when the lots fill.
Wekiwa Springs now requires a day-use entry reservation, and it applies to every day-use guest, annual passholders included. Reservations open up to 60 days in advance, and same-day reservations stay possible until the day’s limit is met, so a Saturday morning attempt is not hopeless. Hold one on the Florida State Parks reservation site before the car is loaded, because arriving without it ends at the entrance station.
Kelly Park, at Rock Springs, belongs to Orange County and runs on a vehicle count: 280 admitted each morning, then another 50 after 1 p.m. On a weekend the park is frequently full by mid-morning, and cars arriving after that are turned away at the entry. The 50-vehicle release after 1 p.m. is the second chance for anyone who slept in.
When Kelly Park reaches capacity, Orange County updates the park’s web page to show it is full, and updates its information line on 407-254-1906. Both are worth checking before leaving Orlando, not on the road. If you are already inside and have to leave for lunch or ice, ask for a re-entry stamp at the gatehouse and keep your receipt. For Wekiwa, the same-day availability shown on the reservation site is the equivalent signal.
Manatee season: Blue Spring closes to swimmers, Crystal River does not
The Blue Spring run holds a constant 72 degrees year-round, and that steadiness is why West Indian manatees crowd into it in winter. From November 15 the spring and the run close to swimming, snorkeling, diving, tubing and paddling. Swimming season is April 1 to November 14. The closure can begin sooner and end later depending on how long the animals stay, and the park sets the reopening on their departure, with two different March dates circulating in secondhand listings. The park also fills and closes temporarily to new arrivals in winter, so the standing advice is to arrive before 9 a.m.
Crystal River works the opposite way. Its manatee season, November 15 to March 31, is exactly when people get in the water, under the seven warm-water sanctuaries in effect for those months. Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1983, is the only national wildlife refuge created specifically to protect the Florida manatee, and it runs no tours of its own: in-water viewing in Kings Bay is operated by businesses holding a Special Use Permit. Book with one of those operators. That is two hours (est.) west of Orlando, on the same dates that close the Blue Spring run to swimmers.
Playalinda Beach closures on launch days
Canaveral National Seashore charges $25.00 per private vehicle, $15.00 per person arriving on foot or by bicycle, and $20.00 for a motorcycle. The Apollo and Playalinda entrance stations take credit and debit cards only. There is also a $45.00 park annual pass, which costs less than two $25.00 vehicle entries.
During launches at the adjacent Kennedy Space Center or within Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, the park closes vistas inside the Playalinda District. Playalinda Beach Road closes between the entry gate and parking lot #1 thirty minutes before the launch, to vehicle, foot and bicycle traffic alike, and reopens immediately following a successful launch or a confirmed cancellation. NASA also holds the authority to close parts of the park for Space Center operations without notice.
The launch rules and the schedule sit on the National Park Service’s rocket launch viewing page for Canaveral, and the park posts temporary hour changes for launch support alongside its operating hours. Apollo Beach is the northern access, at New Smyrna Beach and outside the Playalinda District, reached from I-95 exit 249 and about 25 miles east on State Road 44. Playalinda has its own road in, exit 220 and roughly 15 miles east on Garden Street from Titusville. With a Saturday window on the calendar, drive north instead.
Beach driving in Volusia County: where it is allowed and parking
Volusia County allows driving on the beach at ramps in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Ormond Beach and Ponce Inlet. A daily beach-driving pass costs $30 for visitors. The hours change twice a year: from May 1 to October 31 vehicles are allowed 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. or sundown, whichever comes first, and from November 1 to April 30 the window is sunrise to sunset. All of it runs tides permitting, and a high tide can shut a stretch of sand regardless of the clock.
On the Gulf side, the Siesta Key Public Beach and Pavilion lot carries 976 parking spaces. Two and a half to three hours (est.) each way makes that a two-night weekend, and the parking, the water and the seasons are laid out in our Siesta Key guide.
Castillo de San Marcos hours, ticket and closed days
Castillo de San Marcos opens at 9:00 a.m., takes its last admission at 5:00 p.m. and closes at 5:15 p.m. The grounds are closed from midnight to 6:00 a.m. The monument closes on Thanksgiving Day and on Christmas Day, the two dates to check against a holiday weekend before booking a room in St. Augustine. Admission is $15.00 for anyone aged 16 and above, valid for 7 consecutive days, and the window takes credit and debit cards only.
Best time to visit Orlando
Winter shortens the county day. Kelly Park runs 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from March until early November, then 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November until March, with the waterfront and the trails closing an hour before the park does. The Blue Spring water goes off limits to swimmers, Kings Bay opens for in-water viewing, and Volusia switches its driving window on November 1. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaks on September 10, and concentrates most of its activity between mid-August and mid-October. For two days away that rarely means canceling in advance. It means keeping the Saturday night refundable in September, and reading the forecast on the Thursday: a named storm three days out is enough to cancel a two-day trip, where a week could absorb it.
Two runs of weekends stay clear of both calendars. April 1 to mid-June: the Blue Spring swimming season opens April 1, the Kings Bay sanctuaries came off on March 31, and the tropics are quiet through the first weeks of the season. Mid-October to November 14: the storm peak has passed, the spring run is still open to swimmers, and Kelly Park still holds its 8 p.m. closing into early November. The last word
Add up the doors for a two-site weekend and the pricing splits by the head or by the car. Canaveral charges $25.00 for the vehicle, so four adults arrive on one charge. The Castillo charges $15.00 a head from age 16, and the same four pay $60.00 at the window, though children 15 and under enter free when an adult comes with them. Both sites take payment by card, so bring one that works and keep it with whoever is driving.
