What the month takes back is calendar room. The American spring-break weeks land inside it, so a room with sand on the other side of the door gets claimed earlier than in a quiet month. Four weeks in either direction moves the thermometer very little: April runs 2.4°F warmer by day, February 1.4°F cooler.

Cancun weather in March: average highs, lows and rain days

Every figure here comes from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020 normals, computed for the model grid cell at 21.1743° N, 86.8466° W. That is a modeled cell sitting over Cancun on the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo, not a thermometer at the airport, and it is worth knowing the difference before you compare it with a station table. The inland Yucatán behind the coast runs hotter and drier than these numbers, so do not carry them west to Valladolid or Chichén Itzá.

Three days in an average March record at least 0.10 inch of rain, and not one records an inch or more. Spread over the month, that is measurable rain roughly one day in ten, with 1.29 inches in total for all thirty-one days. In a beach week it usually reads as a shower that reshuffles an afternoon: lunch moves under cover, the towels go back out. One caveat travels with that figure: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. An 8 a.m. swim starts slightly below the printed number, an afternoon swim slightly above it. Other sea-temperature tables use other methods and land elsewhere, and that spread is a matter of definition rather than of one source being wrong.

In practice, 80.7°F water under 80.4°F air means there is no shock at the entry and no hurry to get out. Snorkeling for an hour is comfortable without a shorty for most adults, and children who wade in and out all afternoon stay warm. The number applies to the sea surface off the city’s Caribbean shore. It says nothing about the Nichupté lagoon behind the hotel zone, and nothing at all about inland cenotes, which run far colder year round.

That matters for one decision only: a boat crossing or a reef trip, where a choppy morning is a different outing from a calm one. How busy is Cancun in March? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

March falls in the dry half of the Caribbean-coast calendar, and it holds the American spring-break weeks, which is the single demand fact that separates it from a quiet month. We hold no occupancy counts and no hotel-rate series for Cancun, and we do not rank months by price without them. What can be said plainly is that a month with school breaks inside it competes for the same rooms as everyone else’s school breaks.

Book the flight first and the room second, because seats on the March weekends go before the beds do. Six to ten weeks out (est.) is a sensible target for anything beachfront, and longer if your dates are fixed by a school calendar. If your dates float by even three days, price the midweek arrival: Tuesday to Tuesday competes with far less of the break traffic than Saturday to Saturday.

On lodging tax, we have nothing verified to give you. No rate for Quintana Roo was confirmed, so no percentage is printed. Ask the property to quote the all-taxes-included total before you leave a deposit, and compare that total rather than the headline nightly rate between two hotels.

There is one upgrade that changes the month rather than the photographs: direct beach frontage. Things to do in Cancun in March

March’s specific gift is the combination: sea at 80.7°F, air at 80.4°F, and only three days in the average month with measurable rain. February gives you the same dryness with cooler water at 80.2°F, April gives warmer water at 81.6°F and more rain at 1.48 inches. Only March puts the warm-water half of the year together with the lowest rainfall of the three, and that is what makes full-day water plans reasonable to book in advance.

The shortlist for a March week: Playa Delfines, the big public beach on the seaward side of the hotel zone, with the viewpoint above it. El Rey, the small Maya site on the lagoon side of Boulevard Kukulcán. The Museo Maya de Cancún, which shares its grounds with the San Miguelito ruins. And the passenger ferry across to Isla Mujeres from Puerto Juárez. Admission prices and sailing times are set by the operators and are not among the figures here, so confirm both on the day.

What March changes at those places is the air, not the water. The sea moves 1.4°F across February, March and April, barely a perceptible amount to a swimmer. The air moves 3.8°F over the same stretch, and it lands hardest on open ground: El Rey and San Miguelito have almost no shade, and walking them at 80.4°F in March is a different hour from walking them at 82.8°F in April. Go before ten, or go at four.

Free in March, as in every month: the beaches themselves, including Playa Delfines and the lookout above it, and the 6:58 p.m. sunset that closes a 12-hour day. Walking the hotel zone’s beach line costs nothing. The bill only starts at the ticket desk or the ferry counter.

Cancun in March: a two-day itinerary

Start at 6:54 a.m. on day one if you can face it: that is sunrise on the 15th, and the sand walks cool long before the air reaches its 80.4°F peak. Nine to eleven at El Rey, on the lagoon side, where shade is scarce and the visit is short. Swim from eleven to one, when the water’s 80.7°F and the day’s warmest air line up. Lunch, then the flat middle of the afternoon somewhere covered. Back to the shore around five, and take sunset from the Playa Delfines viewpoint at 6:58 p.m.

Day two goes across the water: the passenger ferry from Puerto Juárez to Isla Mujeres in the morning, the island’s north beach through the early afternoon, the return before the light goes at 6:58. Buy the ticket at the counter and confirm the last sailing back at the same time. If the day lands on one of March’s three wet days, move the crossing and take the Museo Maya de Cancún with the San Miguelito ruins on the same site instead. An average March records no day at an inch or more of rain.

Is March a good time to visit Cancun?

Yes, if the trip is built around water. Sea at 80.7°F, air at 80.4°F and three wet days in an average month is about as reliable as a monthly normal gets on this coast, and it supports a week of snorkeling, ferry days and long swims. No, if quiet is the point, or if the budget is tighter than the itinerary: March carries the American spring-break weeks, and we have no rate data with which to soften that.
