Set against that, the average low of 72.9°F makes for warm nights rather than hot ones, February sits squarely in the northern winter travel window, and March runs both warmer (80.4°F) and drier (1.29 inches). Four weeks in either direction changes the trip, and the figures below say by how much.

Cancun weather in February: average highs, lows and rain days

Every figure here comes from Open-Meteo’s reanalysis of the ECMWF ERA5 model, 1991–2020, for the grid cell at 21.17° N, 86.85° W. That cell sits over Cancun itself, on the Caribbean edge of Quintana Roo, and the inland Yucatán behind it runs hotter and drier. One qualifier travels with that number: it is a mean of daily maxima, so it reads a touch warmer than a 24-hour average of the same water would. Treat it as the afternoon figure, not the six o’clock figure.

At 80.2°F the water sits about a degree above the average daytime air, so walking in costs nothing in willpower and there is no gasp at waist depth. An adult can stay in for an hour without going cold, and children last as long as they are allowed to. For a two-hour boat trip with wind on wet skin, a rash guard is worth packing.

We could not read a February wind or swell series for Cancun from the sources used here, so no figure for either appears. The 80.2°F value describes surface temperature alone and says nothing about chop on the crossing to Isla Mujeres or about seaweed on a given week. What can be pointed at is the weather that drives the demand: 1.43 inches of rain against January’s 2.41, in the heart of the dry season.

No measured series backs a lead time either, so take this as editorial judgment: roughly eight to twelve weeks ahead (est.) for February dates, and earlier again if your trip is locked to a school-break week. Flights and rooms move on the same calendar, and dates you cannot shift are the ones worth booking first.

A state lodging tax applies in Quintana Roo, and we could not verify its current rate from a primary source, so no amount is quoted here. Ask the property what is added at checkout and whether the nightly figure you were quoted already includes it, because that answer varies from one booking channel to another.

Paying more changes this month in exactly one place: the distance between your bed and the sand. With daylight closing at 6:46 pm, the hours before nine carry the trip, when the air has not yet reached 79.0°F and the beach is at its emptiest. Things to do in Cancun in February

That is what this month allows and the wetter end of the winter does not: a snorkeling trip, an open-air archaeological site and a long shore walk stacked into the same 48 hours without a fallback for each one.

Playa Delfines, at the south end of the Hotel Zone, gives the widest open sand and the horizon you came for. Playa Las Perlas, up at the sheltered northern end, gives calmer water for small children. The El Rey archaeological site sits inside the Hotel Zone itself, the Museo Maya de Cancún stands nearby for an indoor hour, and the Isla Mujeres ferries run from Puerto Juárez. Across the three winter months on record the water barely moves: 80.7°F in January, 80.2 in February, 80.7 in March. The air and the rain do the moving. Beaches in Mexico are federal public land, so the sand costs nothing whichever resort stands behind it, and the public access points along Boulevard Kukulcán are the way in. Cancun in February: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts on Playa Delfines for the 7:16 am sunrise, with the first swim from nine while the water sits near 80.2°F and the air has not yet topped 79.0°F. Eat indoors between one and three, when the sun is at its most direct, then walk the El Rey site mid-afternoon in longer light. Be back on the sand by half past five: the sun is gone at 6:46 pm and dinner happens after dark.

Day two goes on the water, with the first ferry from Puerto Juárez to Isla Mujeres and the north-end beach before the day boats land. If one of the month’s 3.4 wet days lands on you instead, swap the crossing for the Museo Maya de Cancún and the ruins across the road, and keep the boat for the next morning. A day collecting an inch or more shows up 0.1 times per February, so losing both days to rain is a long shot.

Cancun in February vs January and March

Between January and March the daytime figure climbs 2.7°F, and February lands in the middle at 79.0°F, 1.3 above January and 1.4 below March. Rainfall does the more dramatic thing: 2.41 inches in January, 1.43 in February, 1.29 in March, with wet days falling 5.5, 3.4, 3.0. The sea stays flat through all of it, 80.7°F either side of February’s 80.2, half a degree of difference in a ten-year marine average.

Shifting four weeks forward to March gains you 1.4°F of daytime warmth, 0.4 fewer wet days and half a degree of sea, at the cost of the North American school-break surge that lands in that month. Shifting back to January costs a full inch of extra rain and 2.1 more wet days for a sea that is fractionally warmer and nights that are a degree cooler.

Is February a good time to visit Cancun?

Yes, for anyone whose week is built around water and outdoor hours: 80.2°F sea, 79.0°F air, measurable rain on about one day in eight. No, for two groups. Travelers after genuinely hot nights will find the average low at 72.9°F, warm but not sultry. And anyone hoping for empty sand has picked the middle of the winter window.

If the answer came out no, move forward to March instead of back to January: 80.4°F days, 1.29 inches of rain and 3.0 wet days make it the warmest and driest of the three, and January’s 5.5 wet days are the wrong direction entirely. The thing you accept in exchange is a month that carries the spring-break calendar.

Among the three, only February combines rainfall already down about 40 percent from January (1.43 inches against 2.41) with the March school-break surge still four weeks off.

Book the room you can walk out of barefoot, set an alarm for 7:16 am, and treat 72.9°F nights as the fair price of a 79.0°F February.
