JAMAICA · MARCH · 18.49° N
March at the Luminous Lagoon runs to an average high of 84.0°F and an average low of 72.3°F, with 2.27 inches of rain falling across about six wet days. The attraction here is nocturnal, so the clock counts as much as the thermometer: on March 15 the sun sets at 6:21 p.m. local, closing 12 hours 05 minutes of daylight, and the boats go out into the dark after that.
Falmouth, the town the lagoon belongs to, sits about 19 miles (30 km) east of Montego Bay and its airport, so the evening usually ends with a drive back along the coast. March also falls well outside the Atlantic hurricane season of June 1 to November 30, as our hurricane-season guide sets out month by month.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · LUMINOUS LAGOON · MARCH
March works at the Luminous Lagoon if you give it two evenings rather than one: 84.0°F days, an 81.7°F sea and 6.1 days of measurable rain, against April’s 9.0.
SEA 81.7°F · 6.1 WET DAYS · SUNSET 6:21 P.M. · OUTSIDE HURRICANE SEASON
Go for: warm water at 81.7°F, drier evenings than April’s, and a night boat that only needs one clear sky out of the several you will have.
Think twice before: booking a single night at Falmouth. Measurable rain falls on about one day in five, and a one-night visitor has no spare evening.

Every figure here comes from one source: Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020 normals computed for the grid cell at 18.49° N, 77.66° W. That cell sits over Falmouth, where the lagoon is, about 19 miles east of Montego Bay. It is model output rather than a thermometer at an airport, and it describes that stretch of coast, not the whole north shore. Read the 84.0°F high and the 72.3°F low as the shape of a Falmouth March, not as a reading anyone took at the dock.
Rain reaches 0.10 inch or more on 6.1 days in an average March, so measurable rain arrives roughly one day in five. Only 0.1 day tops a full inch, meaning a genuine soaking lands about one March in ten. The practical shape of that is short heavy showers rather than gray afternoons, and for a boat trip that leaves after dark the real question is whether one of those six days falls on your one booked night.
Day and night are 11.7°F apart, high to low, and the low arrives near dawn rather than at nine in the evening. Open water after sunset still feels cooler than the same air on shore, and the swim comes with a wet ride back to the dock. A long-sleeve layer and a dry shirt belong in the bag for the boat. Our Jamaica packing list handles the rest of the suitcase.
Daylight on March 15 runs 12 hours 05 minutes, with the sun going down at 6:21 p.m. local. Jamaica keeps UTC-5 all year, so that sunset does not jump an hour when US clocks change mid-month. Since the glow only reads in full dark, the evening’s anchor point is that 6:21 p.m., and dinner, the drive and the boat all arrange themselves around it.
Can you swim at the Luminous Lagoon in March? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off this coast averages 81.7°F in March, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. One caveat travels with the number: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would, and a night swim will not sit at the top of that range.
At 81.7°F nobody thinks about wetsuits, nobody gasps on entry, and children stay in until they are called out. Two limits on that comfort. The reading is open sea off the coast, and we have no measurement taken inside the lagoon itself. Whether a given operator includes a swim from the boat we could not verify either, so ask when you book.
We found no wind or swell series for this stretch of the north coast, so we give no figures for either, and nothing above should be read as a forecast for a particular night. What the numbers do say is that air at 84.0°F and sea at 81.7°F sit 2.3°F apart in March. Getting out of the water after dark is the cold part of the evening, not getting in.
How busy is the Luminous Lagoon in March? Crowds, prices and booking
March falls inside the North American winter travel window, and US school spring breaks land in these four weeks. Beyond that calendar, we found no occupancy series and no room-rate series for Falmouth or Montego Bay, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. Weather we can compare: March takes 2.27 inches of rain against April’s 3.23, and 6.1 wet days against April’s 9.0.
Without a fare series we name no lead time in weeks. The piece worth locking early is the lagoon night itself, because the trip runs after dark and a visitor who allows it a single evening has no second chance if that evening is one of the wet six. Two nights at Falmouth solves it. Routes and fares from the States sit in flights from the US.
We could not verify Jamaica’s accommodation tax rate, so we give no percentage and no per-night figure. What a Jamaica trip costs carries what our sources support on budgets, and know before you go covers paying for things once you land.
One line in the budget genuinely changes a March evening: the ride home. The boat comes back in the dark, Falmouth is 19 miles east of Montego Bay, and the choice between driving that yourself and paying a driver to wait is what decides how the night ends. Driving in Jamaica and getting around without a car lay out both routes, and airport transfers the first leg.
Things to do around the Luminous Lagoon in March: Falmouth, the Martha Brae and Montego Bay

March hands a nocturnal attraction something April cannot: 6.1 wet days against 9.0, and 2.27 inches of rain against 3.23. On an evening spent in an open boat, that gap is the trip. February is drier still at 1.62 inches, but its sea runs 81.2°F and its air 82.9°F, both under March.
Falmouth is the base, and the ERA5 cell behind every figure above sits over the town. Nineteen miles west lie Montego Bay, the airport and the hotel strip. Inland runs the Martha Brae, the local rafting river. East along the coast, Ocho Rios and Dunn’s River Falls make an easy daytime pairing.
None of those places changes its own temperature much between February and April: the river runs as it runs and the falls fall. Air is what moves, and it moves 2.8°F across the three months, from February’s 82.9°F to April’s 85.7°F. March’s 84.0°F sits in the middle, warm enough for a midday raft and cool enough that the evening on the water asks for that extra layer.
We could not verify any waived fees or free-admission days at the lagoon or its neighbors for March, so we promise none. What costs nothing is the light: 12 hours 05 minutes of it on the 15th, and a 6:21 p.m. sunset over the water, watchable from the Falmouth shoreline before the boats go out.
The Luminous Lagoon in March: a two-day itinerary
Day one keeps the heat at arm’s length. Take the morning on the coast while the air climbs toward 84.0°F, eat a long lunch through the hottest stretch, then swim in the afternoon when the 81.7°F sea is at its daily warmest. Be back, changed and fed before 6:21 p.m., since the lagoon trip cannot begin until full dark. Carry the long sleeves aboard: the ride back is wet and open, and the air keeps sliding toward its 72.3°F low all night.
Day two goes inland and west: the Martha Brae by raft in the morning, Montego Bay or Ocho Rios in the afternoon, the airport 19 miles away whenever the flight says. If one of the 6.1 wet days is yours, March rain tends to come hard and brief rather than all day, so push the raft to the afternoon and spend the gap indoors. If it is the evening that rains, the second night is why you kept it.
The Luminous Lagoon in March vs February and April
| February | March | April | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 82.9°F | 84.0°F | 85.7°F |
| Average low | 72.0°F | 72.3°F | 73.6°F |
| Precipitation | 1.62 in | 2.27 in | 3.23 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.9 | 6.1 | 9.0 |
| Sea surface | 81.2°F | 81.7°F | 82.7°F |
Air climbs steadily across the three months: 82.9°F, 84.0°F, 85.7°F, with lows from 72.0 to 73.6°F. Rain climbs faster, 1.62 inches to 2.27 to 3.23, and wet days more than double, 3.9 to 6.1 to 9.0. The sea moves least of all, 81.2°F to 81.7°F to 82.7°F, every reading from the marine series of daily maxima rather than from the ERA5 normals.
Shift four weeks late and April gives 1.7°F more air and 1.0°F more sea, then charges nearly three extra wet days for it. Shift four weeks early and February is the driest of the three by 0.65 inch, with 3.9 wet days, at the cost of the coolest air and coolest water in the set. Our February page makes that case in full. For a trip built around one night on a boat, wet days are the currency, and March spends fewer of them than April.
Is March a good time to visit the Luminous Lagoon?
Yes for most travelers, with one condition attached. Days at 84.0°F, a sea at 81.7°F and 6.1 wet days make a straightforward week on this coast, and the lagoon needs exactly one dry evening out of however many you give it. The person who should hesitate is the one flying in for a single night: one evening in five comes wet, and there is no spare.
If that is the trip, February is the shift worth making: 1.62 inches of rain and 3.9 wet days, the safest evenings of the three, paid for with 1.1°F less air and 0.5°F less water. April runs the wrong way for a night boat, warmer sea and all, because 9.0 wet days is close to one evening in three.
What March alone offers: a sea already up at 81.7°F, half a degree above February’s, with April’s three inches of rain still four weeks off.
The last word
Book two evenings at Falmouth rather than one and treat the first as the spare. That is the March decision, and 6.1 wet days is the reason behind it. The rest of the month is generous with you: the sun comes back up at 6:17 a.m. on the 15th, which leaves room for a swim off the north coast long before the air reaches its 84.0°F high.
