JAMAICA · FEBRUARY · THE LUMINOUS LAGOON
Falmouth’s lagoon glows after dark, and February hands the town the driest page of its winter: 1.62 inches of rain for the whole month, 3.9 days wet enough to measure, an average afternoon of 82.9°F. The glow is a night outing, so the hour that shapes the trip is not noon but 6:12 p.m., when the sun sets on February 15. The lagoon sits about 19 miles (30 km) east of Montego Bay, which is where most flights from the US land.
What the month takes back is a degree of water. The sea surface off the lagoon averages 81.2°F in February against 82.3°F in January, the coolest of the three winter months. The figures below are February’s alone. The wider question of when to come to the island at all belongs to the 12-month verdict, and the town at the other end of the coast road has its own guide.

FEBRUARY AT A GLANCE · THE LUMINOUS LAGOON
February is the driest of the three winter months at the lagoon, with an 82.9°F afternoon, 3.9 wet days and the coolest sea of the three at 81.2°F.
DRIEST OF THE WINTER BAND · SEA 81.2°F · SUNSET 6:12 P.M. ON FEB 15
Go for: the fewest wet days of the winter band, full dark soon after 6:12 p.m. for an early night boat, and daytime plans that survive the forecast.
Think twice before: expecting warmer water than January: the sea averages 81.2°F in February against 82.3°F four weeks earlier.

One caution travels with every figure here: the air normals come from a reanalysis grid cell centered on Falmouth at 18.4936°N, 77.6559°W, not from an airport thermometer, and they describe that cell rather than the whole north coast.
the Luminous Lagoon weather in February: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | February at the lagoon |
|---|---|
| Average high | 82.9°F |
| Average low | 72.0°F |
| Monthly rainfall | 1.62 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.9 |
| Days with 1.00 in or more | 0.0 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 81.2°F |
| Daylight, February 15 | 11 h 35 min |
The 1991-2020 normals read 82.9°F for the average afternoon high and 72.0°F for the average overnight low, with 1.62 inches of rain across the month. They come from ECMWF’s ERA5 reanalysis, served through Open-Meteo: a model’s reconstruction of a grid cell, not a reading from a station with a name and an identifier. The two kinds of record can disagree by a degree or more, most often on the overnight figure, so treat 72.0°F as the softer of the two numbers on this table.
Measurable rain falls on 3.9 days in an average February, roughly one day in seven, counting anything from 0.10 inch up. Days reaching a full inch: 0.0 in the average. Practically, that describes a month where an afternoon gets interrupted rather than canceled, and where the month’s whole total is a third less than what March collects over the same number of weeks.
Between afternoon and dawn the thermometer travels 10.9°F, from 82.9°F down to 72.0°F. Daytime dress is whatever you would wear to a beach. Evenings are what people underpack for: a boat after dark, wet skin, and air sliding toward the low make a long-sleeve layer the most useful thing in the bag. Our packing list covers the rest of the suitcase.
February 15 brings 11 hours 35 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 6:37 a.m. and sunset at 6:12 p.m. local (11:37 and 23:12 UTC, Jamaica running five hours behind UTC through the year). Darkness arrives early enough that a 7 p.m. departure is a night departure, and dinner at a normal hour does not compete with the outing.
Can you swim in the Luminous Lagoon in February? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea surface off the lagoon averages 81.2°F in February in the Open-Meteo Marine API’s 2015-2024 record. That figure is the mean of daily maxima across those ten Februaries, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. Other sea-temperature tables use other methods, and a degree of spread between published values is ordinary rather than a contradiction.
At 81.2°F the water sits within two degrees of the afternoon air, so getting in asks nothing of anybody. Getting out after dark is the colder half of the exchange, since the air is heading for 72.0°F overnight while the water barely moves. Anyone planning an evening swim before a night boat should have the dry clothes within reach at the steps.
Wind and swell we cannot supply: our sources carry no February wind speed and no wave height for this stretch of coast, so we quote none. What the record does support is steadiness. The sea stays within 1.1°F of itself across January, February and March, which is a smaller swing than a single February day puts into the air.
How busy is the Luminous Lagoon in February? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
February falls inside the northern-winter window when Jamaica’s north coast runs dry, and the 1.62 inches in the Falmouth cell fit that pattern. Where the month sits on the price ladder we cannot say: we found no monthly occupancy series and no room-rate series for Falmouth or Montego Bay, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. For what a Jamaica trip runs end to end, our cost breakdown does that work.
Booking lead time is the same blank. We hold no reservation data, so the number of weeks ahead is not ours to give. The calendar does settle one thing: with sunset at 6:12 p.m., the darkness a glow tour needs starts early, and an afternoon arrival at Montego Bay can still make a night outing the same evening across those 19 miles. Transfer options and prices sit on their own page.
We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging-tax rate or any tourism levy charged by Falmouth-area hotels, so we give no percentage. Ask the property for a total with tax included before you hold a room for February nights. The rules we have checked are collected in know before you go.
One upgrade genuinely changes the month: sleeping on the lagoon side of those 19 miles rather than beyond them. A night boat finishes well after the 6:12 p.m. sunset, and the return drive is what you pay for in tiredness the next morning, as our driving guide sets out. Where to stay sorts the coast by base.
Things to do in the Luminous Lagoon in February

February is the driest of the three winter months here, 1.62 inches against 2.02 in January and 2.27 in March, and it carries the fewest wet days at 3.9. That is the usable difference: a two-night visit in February has a better chance of spending both afternoons outdoors than the same two nights four weeks later, when the count rises to 6.1 wet days.
The lagoon itself lies at Falmouth, 18.49°N, about 19 miles east of Montego Bay, with the sea off it at 81.2°F this month. West, Montego Bay is the airport town and the base most visitors use. East, Ocho Rios and Dunn’s River Falls complete the north-coast pairing.
Water is the constant and air is the variable. The sea moves 1.1°F across the three winter months, while the air moves 10.9°F between one February dawn and that same February afternoon. Build the day around the air: anything strenuous in the hours after the 6:37 a.m. sunrise, the swimming at whatever hour suits, since 81.2°F does not care what time it is.
We could not verify any free-admission day or waived fee at the lagoon in February, so we promise none. The month does give away one thing: the sun going down over the water at 6:12 p.m. costs nothing and lands early enough to be the prelude to dinner rather than its replacement. Things to do in Jamaica carries the rest of the list.
The Luminous Lagoon in February: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise at 6:37 a.m. gives a cool start, and the first three hours are the ones for walking or riding, ahead of the 82.9°F peak. Lunch indoors, the hot middle of the day spent in the water, then be at Falmouth by 5:30 p.m. for the 6:12 p.m. sunset. The boat follows once the sky has gone fully dark, with the long-sleeve layer already in the bag for air heading to 72.0°F.
Day two reverses the order: morning in the sea at 81.2°F, afternoon west along the 19 miles to Montego Bay, evening flight or a second night there. If the weather turns, recall what a February rain day is here. Of the 3.9 that measure 0.10 inch, none in an average month reaches a full inch, so the plan slides by an hour rather than by a day.
The Luminous Lagoon in February vs January and March
| Measure | January | February | March |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 82.0°F | 82.9°F | 84.0°F |
| Average low | 72.3°F | 72.0°F | 72.3°F |
| Rainfall | 2.02 in | 1.62 in | 2.27 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 5.0 | 3.9 | 6.1 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 82.3°F | 81.2°F | 81.7°F |
Across the three months the air climbs and the rain climbs with it: 82.0°F, 82.9°F and 84.0°F for the highs, against 2.02, 1.62 and 2.27 inches. Wet days run 5.0, 3.9 and 6.1. The sea does the opposite of what most people assume, peaking in January at 82.3°F, dipping to 81.2°F in February and recovering only to 81.7°F by March.
Move four weeks back and you gain 1.1°F of water while losing more than a day of dry weather, since January posts 5.0 wet days and 2.02 inches. Move four weeks forward and March charges 2.2 extra wet days and 0.65 inch more rain for its 1.1°F of extra afternoon heat. The January page argues the other side from the same figures.
Is February a good time to visit the Luminous Lagoon?
Yes for anyone whose trip depends on dry afternoons and an early dark: 3.9 wet days, no day at an inch in the average month, and full night not long after 6:12 p.m. No for anyone chasing the warmest possible swim, since January’s 82.3°F sea beats this month by 1.1°F, and no for anyone who wants the hottest land weather, which belongs to March at 84.0°F.
If the water is the deciding factor, January is the better four weeks, and only on that count: it also brings 5.0 wet days and 2.02 inches, both worse than February’s. If heat on land decides it, March delivers 84.0°F afternoons and charges 6.1 wet days for them. Hurricane season plays no part in any of the three, as the storm calendar shows.
February alone puts the winter band’s lowest rainfall, 1.62 inches, next to a night that begins at 6:12 p.m.
The last word
Book the bed on the lagoon side of the 19 miles, keep the first morning free for the 6:37 a.m. light, and let the night outing set everything else. One figure held back until now: February’s average low of 72.0°F is the coolest of the three winter months, 0.3°F under both January and March, which is the whole argument for the extra layer on a boat that stays out past nine.
