Santorini in May: Weather, Crowds and What to Do

May is a very good month for Santorini, especially on a first visit. Days feel pleasantly warm, the island is open for the season, and it is far calmer than in high summer. The sea is the one catch. It is still cool, so anyone planning a trip around swimming may prefer June or September.

Is May a good time to visit Santorini?

Yes. Nearly everything is open by May, while a few smaller seasonal hotels and beach properties welcome guests a bit later in the month. Beach restaurants in Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos reopen gradually, so the full summer beach-club scene has usually not arrived in early May. Fira has bars and late-night venues all month, and beach nightlife picks up toward June.

Crowds are real but manageable. Cruise ships call, and Fira and Oia fill up while they are in port. Mornings and evenings are calmer, and an early visit to Oia avoids the busiest cruise-ship hours. Restaurant tables are easier to get than in summer, though sunset dinners and special-occasion restaurants are still worth reserving.

Hotel prices sit below summer levels, although top caldera hotels and private-pool suites remain expensive. Caldera-view rooms and popular honeymoon hotels can book up months in advance, even in May, so it pays to reserve early.

If Greek Easter lands in early May, you may notice more Greeks traveling, crowded churches and adjusted business hours. Pyrgos is especially atmospheric during the Good Friday celebrations. Book rooms and important meals early if your trip overlaps Easter weekend.

What is the weather like in Santorini in May?

Santorini weather from April to June (long-term averages)
Month Average high Average low Sea Rainy days Daylight (15th)
April 66°F (19°C) 56°F (13°C) 64°F (18°C) 4 13 h 05
May 74°F (23°C) 62°F (17°C) 67°F (19°C) 2 14 h 05
June 82°F (28°C) 70°F (21°C) 74°F (23°C) 0 14 h 38

Days are mostly sunny, and the island is still green. Early in the month, wildflowers and spring growth line the hiking paths and the inland villages. Rain is possible but uncommon, and it falls mostly in early May. Evenings turn cool on exposed caldera terraces and boat decks.

Wind is the wild card. Summer winds called the meltemi blow hardest in July and August, so May is usually calmer, though a breezy day can still turn up. A strong wind makes the air feel cooler and the sea rough.

The long days let sunset dinners stretch into slow evenings.

Can you swim in Santorini in May?

Yes, though most visitors find the sea cold. A dip can feel refreshing on a sunny afternoon, though many visitors don't stay in long, and late May is a touch warmer than early May. Water off the dark-sand beaches runs noticeably warmer, because the lava sand absorbs heat.

Hotel pools can feel colder than you'd expect, especially in shade or wind. If swimming at your hotel matters, book a heated pool and ask what temperature it is kept at during your dates. Pool heating varies from hotel to hotel, with some warming the water just slightly and others keeping it comfortable. Don't assume a private plunge pool is heated.

How does May compare with April and June?

April is quieter and cheaper, and more seasonal hotels and restaurants have yet to open. Many first-time visitors find May a happy middle ground between April and June.

June brings warmer weather and a warmer sea, which suits swimming, beach days and nightlife. May wins for hiking, hotel value, spring scenery and lighter crowds. If beach clubs and a proper swim top your list, aim for June.

The month also changes from week to week. Early May is cooler, greener, quieter and cheaper. Early May suits hiking, photography and wandering Oia, Imerovigli and the inland villages, although a few beach restaurants are still getting ready for the season and evenings can feel chilly. By mid-May, hotels, restaurants, wineries, and tours are all up and running, and the days are comfortable with crowds that still feel manageable. For a first visit, the second half of the month is a lovely time to come.

What is there to do in Santorini in May?

Hike from Fira to Oia. May is a lovely month for the caldera trail, with mild days and spring greenery along the cliff edge. Start in the morning, carry water, and take your time at the chapels and viewpoints along the way, including Skaros rock, which you can climb for wide views.

Visit a winery. Vineyards are green, the tasting rooms are open, and sitting outdoors for a tasting feels comfortable without the summer heat. Venetsanos, Santo Wines and Estate Argyros are all worth a visit. Reserve ahead for sunset tastings.

Take a caldera boat tour. Catamaran cruises, volcano visits and sunset trips run regularly, weather permitting. Walking on Nea Kameni is easier before the summer heat, and the warm sulfur waters of the hot springs feel pleasant next to the cooler open sea. Book popular sunset cruises ahead, try to schedule your outing early in your stay in case wind changes plans, and pack a warm layer for the deck after dark.

Cross to Therasia. The small, quiet island across the caldera has traditional villages such as Manolas and Korfos, family-run tavernas and caldera views without the crowds. You can go on a standalone excursion or add it as a stop on a private sailing tour.

Wander the villages. Oia, Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli feel more relaxed to explore than they do in midsummer.

See the archaeological sites. Ancient Akrotiri is covered, so it works in sun, wind or light rain. Ancient Thera is exposed, so go in the morning before it turns warm and windy. Both keep seasonal schedules, so check opening days and hours before you go.

Spend an afternoon on the beach. Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos are lovely for sunbathing and a seaside lunch, particularly later in the month as more sunbeds and beach restaurants open.

Where should you stay in Santorini in May?

May is a great month to stay on the caldera, and for a first visit one of the four main caldera towns is a natural choice over a beach resort.

  • Imerovigli: sweeping caldera views, fine luxury hotels and a peaceful atmosphere, loved by couples and honeymooners.
  • Firostefani: caldera views and quiet evenings, with central Fira a 10 to 15 minute walk away.
  • Fira: restaurants, buses, shopping, nightlife and the simplest logistics.
  • Oia: luxury hotels, romance and sunsets. Spending the night lets you enjoy the village in the early morning and once the day visitors have gone.
  • Kamari and Perissa: lower prices and beach access, best in late May.
  • Pyrgos and Akrotiri: quieter bases, with good restaurants in Pyrgos and some excellent caldera-view luxury hotels in Akrotiri. Both work better with a rental car.

How do you get to and around Santorini in May?

Ferries link Santorini with Piraeus (Athens) and with Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Ios, Crete and Milos. Some routes don't sail daily, and the Milos and Crete connections follow the seasonal timetable. Book ahead for popular routes and high-speed boats, and check schedules before you pay for a nonrefundable hotel. Spend your last night in Athens instead.

If you arrive by ferry, consider arranging a transfer ahead of time, particularly with luggage or a hotel outside Fira, since Athinios port can get crowded even in May.

A rental car is handy for wineries, beaches, Akrotiri, Pyrgos and the quieter villages. If you stay in Fira, buses, tours and transfers can cover many of your needs. If you do rent, Greek law requires a valid U.S. driver's license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit.

What should you pack for Santorini in May?

Bring light clothes for warm afternoons and a jacket or sweater for sunset dinners and boat decks. Pack comfortable shoes with good grip for the cobblestones, steps and exposed hiking paths. Add swimwear, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
