June is when Santorini settles into full summer. The days are warm and dry, the sea has finally warmed up enough for a proper swim, and beach clubs, restaurants, wineries, nightlife and boat tours are all open for the season. Long evenings stretch dinner on a terrace well past dark.

Is June a good time to visit Santorini?
Yes, for anyone who wants real summer. June also suits a honeymoon, a splurge on a hotel with caldera views, or a trip that links Santorini with other Greek islands. The catch is cost and company. Prices are high, with caldera-view hotels in Oia and Imerovigli the steepest, and crowds build steadily through the month.
The first half of June is the sweet spot. Beaches and restaurants are lively, rooms are easier to find and rates run slightly lower. Toward the end of June the island starts to feel like peak summer, with higher prices, packed sunset viewpoints and fewer options when you try to book tours and restaurant tables.
Two places feel the squeeze most: Oia at sunset, where the terraces fill early, and Fira on days when cruise ships are in port. See Oia early in the morning, and when the caldera villages are packed, slip off to Pyrgos or Megalochori.
What is the weather like in Santorini in June?
| Month | Average high | Average low | Sea | Rainy days | Daylight (15th) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| May | 74°F (23°C) | 62°F (17°C) | 67°F (19°C) | 2 | 14 h 05 |
| June | 82°F (28°C) | 70°F (21°C) | 74°F (23°C) | 0 | 14 h 38 |
| July | 86°F (30°C) | 74°F (23°C) | 77°F (25°C) | under 1 | 14 h 24 |
June brings settled summer weather. Rain is rare, evenings are usually warm, and the sun is intense from morning on. Heat waves can push afternoons well past the averages above, especially toward the end of the month.
Wind is the thing to watch. The meltemi, a wind that becomes more noticeable as June goes on, is strongest in July and August. It cools the exposed villages on a hot afternoon, but it can also roughen ferry crossings and change or cancel boat tours even under a clear sky. On caldera terraces and boat decks, that same breeze can feel cool once the sun goes down.
The days are long, with sunset around 8:30 p.m., so there is plenty of light left for a late swim or an evening stroll before dinner.
How does June compare with May and July?
May is cheaper, greener, cooler and quieter, but the sea is still cool. June brings warmer water, livelier beach clubs and more seasonal ferry departures, which makes it a good choice if swimming is high on your list.
July runs hotter, windier, busier and pricier than June. June offers much the same summer weather with somewhat smaller crowds.
Where should you stay in Santorini in June?
Imerovigli is a favorite base for couples, with superb caldera views, excellent luxury hotels and calmer evenings than you find in Fira or Oia. Firostefani balances views and convenience, calmer than Fira and about a 10 to 15 minute walk from its center.
Oia is the postcard village, and it stays crowded from late morning through sunset. Many travelers find that a night in Oia feels far more relaxed than a quick visit at sunset, when the village is at its busiest. Kamari and Perissa tend to cost less and sit right by the sea, a fair trade when beach time matters more to you than caldera views. With a rental car, Pyrgos, Megalochori and Akrotiri make quiet bases away from the busiest villages.
June is a fine month to splurge on a cave suite, which stays cool through the midday heat, or a room with a private pool.
What is there to do in Santorini in June?
Start with the beaches. Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos are the best for swimming, with sunbeds, restaurants and beach bars. Arrive early for the best choice of loungers and to beat the midday heat, when the black sand turns painfully hot. Expect coarse sand and pebbles, and water that gets deep quickly in places. Early in the month the sea can still feel cool. Red Beach, with its red sand and iron-rich cliffs, deserves a spot on many itineraries, and boat trips to White Beach usually leave from Red Beach or Akrotiri.
Then get out on the caldera. A catamaran cruise gives you time for swimming, a meal and an easygoing day on the caldera, while a traditional volcano tour costs less and focuses on sightseeing. Exploring the volcanic ground of Nea Kameni is much more pleasant earlier in the day, and a dip in the warm sulfur water of the hot springs feels lovely afterward.
The Fira to Oia path is the classic hike. Start by 7:30 or 8 a.m., earlier in a heat wave, and carry plenty of water, because there is almost no shade after Imerovigli. When the heat peaks, head for ancient Akrotiri, whose covered archaeological site is one of the island's best hot-day outings. Ancient Thera is exposed, so visit it first thing. Wineries are at their best in the late afternoon. Santo Wines near Pyrgos is one of the best wineries to visit, and booking a wine tour means the whole group can taste without worrying about driving.
Plan one proper caldera-view dinner, but don't build every evening around the sunset, since some of Santorini's best restaurants have no caldera view at all. For a night out, Fira is the center of the action, with bars and clubs busy all month.
What should you book ahead for Santorini in June?
Lock in the hotel first if a particular room matters. Caldera views, private pools and honeymoon suites in Oia and Imerovigli can sell out months ahead. If a private pool is part of the dream, ask whether it is heated, because small plunge pools and shaded or windy ones can still feel cool in June. Reserve popular sunset-view restaurants in Oia and Imerovigli well in advance. Ordinary tavernas rarely need a booking.
Reserve sunset and small-group cruises ahead, and schedule yours in the first half of your stay so there is time to rebook if wind cancels the sailing. If you want a rental car for beaches, wineries and the inland villages, book it before you arrive. Pre-book an airport or port transfer if you land late, are staying outside Fira or are traveling with children or lots of luggage. Athinios ferry port can get hectic when a few ferries pull in around the same time.
Ferries run often to Naxos, Paros and Mykonos, with seasonal service to Milos and Crete. Book ahead, especially high-speed boats to Mykonos, Paros, Naxos and Crete. Some routes do not sail daily, so check the timetable before committing to a nonrefundable hotel on another island. Watch the calendar for the Holy Spirit long weekend, a movable holiday tied to Orthodox Easter, when Greeks head for the islands: boats fill on Thursday and Friday and again for the return on Sunday through Tuesday.
Transport strikes are common in Greece and can halt taxis, public transportation, seaports and airports, so leave slack in your plans. If you're flying home from Athens, spend the night before in the city instead of counting on a same-day ferry connection.
What do Americans need to know about entry and safety in Greece?
U.S. citizens can visit Greece without a visa for up to 90 days of tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and you may be asked for proof of sufficient funds and a return or onward ticket.
To drive, Greek law requires a valid U.S. driver's license plus an international driver's permit, and that applies even if the rental company does not ask to see the permit. Greece is generally safe, but petty crime is common at popular tourist sites. Forest fires are common in the dry summer months and occasionally close roads. Thieves also break into rental cars to steal passports, valuables and luggage, so keep those items with you rather than in a parked car.
