July is Santorini at full volume. The days are long, sunny and dry, the sea is warm, and restaurant terraces around the island are open for business. It suits beach lovers and sunset chasers who can live with crowds and peak prices.

What is the weather like in Santorini in July?
| Month | Average high | Average low | Sea | Rainy days | Daylight (15th) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| June | 82°F (28°C) | 70°F (21°C) | 74°F (23°C) | 0 | 14 h 38 |
| July | 86°F (30°C) | 74°F (23°C) | 77°F (25°C) | under 1 | 14 h 24 |
| August | 86°F (30°C) | 74°F (24°C) | 79°F (26°C) | under 1 | 13 h 32 |
July ties with August as the hottest and driest month on Santorini. Rain is so rare that beach days and boat trips seldom need a backup plan. The sea is warm enough for long swims, and the water off the darker beaches runs warmer still because the lava absorbs heat.
Evenings stay warm, which makes late dinners on a terrace a pleasure. Midday is the hard part. Save walking and sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon, and give the hottest hours to the water or a shaded table.
Is July a good time to visit Santorini?
Yes, if you love heat, swimming and a buzzing island. In July the island is in full swing, with Oia and Fira at their liveliest and the beaches around Perivolos busy with visitors.
That energy comes at a price. July is peak season, so prices are at their highest and advance booking is essential. Reserve your room and any tour you care about well ahead.
Oia draws a crowd for sunset every night, so arrive early. For a calmer view, look for the small bus shelter at the south end of Finikia, the end closest to Fira. A flight of steps beside it climbs to a little chapel in about five minutes, with an unobstructed view of Oia and the whole caldera as the light changes.
How does July compare with June and August?
June is the gentler cousin. It's a little cooler, the sea is a few degrees fresher, and the days are even longer. It's also less crowded than July and August, a good pick if you want warm swimming with more breathing room.
August matches July for heat and dryness, has the warmest sea of the three, and keeps the island in full high season. July sits in between: hot, lively and reliably sunny.
What is there to do in Santorini in July?
Start with the water. Santorini's beaches take their color from the volcanic layer exposed, from black sand at Perissa to the red sand and iron-red cliffs of Red Beach. Red Beach, south of Akrotiri, gets its name from the iron-rich cliffs and red sand, and the cliff face is a striking sight from the viewpoint at the end of the road. For a swim, head to Perissa or Amoudi Bay. White Beach is usually reached by boat from Red Beach or Akrotiri.
Below Oia, Amoudi Bay offers a rare chance to swim inside the caldera. You can drive down to Amoudi Bay below Oia, then stroll past the fish tavernas to the seawall that starts at the far end of the wharf. A path, a bit shaky in places, leads about a quarter mile to rocks where people sunbathe and slip straight into the water. Stay for a fish lunch on the way back. For a day on the water, book a boat trip around the caldera with a stop at Nea Kameni to hike or swim in the hot springs.
Land days work too. Visit the ruins at Akrotiri early, before the tour buses arrive. Pyrgos, the old medieval capital, still has its high town walls, and the quieter inland villages offer a break from the crowds. The Fira to Oia hike is the island's most famous walk; in July heat, set out in the cooler hours.
July brings the Santorini Jazz Festival to Kamari, with Greek and international acts. The Oia Art Festival, which runs from June into July, fills the village with open-air exhibitions, artist workshops and live music against the caldera backdrop.
At the table, try melitzanosalata, a dip made with the island's white aubergines, and tomatokeftedes, the tomato fritters that Santorini is known for.
Should you rent a car in Santorini?
Santorini is small, and a car lets you wander and linger at your own pace. The roads are good but narrow and hilly, traffic is worst in Fira's tight streets, and local drivers can be aggressive, so book an automatic if you can. Greece has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the EU. The road between Fira and Oia winds, the road to Akrotiri is fairly straight, and the real switchbacks are on the way up to Ancient Thera and to the monastery above Pyrgos. If winding roads make you nervous, plan to be back at your hotel before dark.
Greek law requires a valid U.S. driver's license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit. Many agencies are honest, though some travelers report charges for minor or nonexistent dents, so reading Google reviews before you book can help. Thieves in Greece break into rental cars to steal passports, valuables and luggage, so it is wise to keep your belongings with you. To skip driving altogether, ask your hotel for a local taxi driver willing to take you around the island, which should cost less than a guided tour.
What should you pack for Santorini in July?
Pack light, breathable clothes: shorts, t-shirts and summer dresses. Sunscreen and a sunhat are a must. Bring sturdy shoes for walking, plus sandals or flip-flops for the beach.
What do Americans need to enter Greece?
U.S. citizens may enter Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and a passport you have reported lost or stolen will be refused at the border. Be ready to show proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket or other evidence of departure if asked.
Is Santorini safe to visit in July?
Greece is generally safe, though petty crime is common in popular tourist spots, so keep a close eye on bags in busy places like Oia and Fira. Carry your passport or another photo ID at all times. Forest fires are common in the dry summer months and occasionally close roads, so check local news before a long driving day.
