July is Greece at full volume: hot, dry, bright and busy. The sea is warm, the skies stay blue, and dinner on a sidewalk patio after dark is one of the month's great pleasures. July suits beach people, swimmers, island hoppers and families. It's harder on anyone hoping for cool sightseeing or a quiet trip.

What is the weather like in Greece in July?
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rainfall | Sunshine per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June | 89°F (32°C) | 70°F (21°C) | 0.3 in (7 mm) | 11.8 h |
| July | 94°F (34°C) | 75°F (24°C) | 0.3 in (7 mm) | 12.4 h |
| August | 94°F (34°C) | 76°F (24°C) | 0.2 in (6 mm) | 11.7 h |
The table covers Athens. Elsewhere the picture shifts a little. Many islands and mountain areas run somewhat cooler than the capital, and the south of the country is usually hotter than the north.
Expect blue skies day after day, and an Athens that can feel stifling by noon. Plenty of afternoons run hotter than the averages suggest, and parts of the country are prone to spells of extreme heat. Build your days around it. Stay indoors through the hottest hours around noon, take a long lunch, and head out again after 5 p.m., when things start to cool. Keep sun protection with you and drink water steadily to reduce the risk of heat stroke.
Rain barely figures, since July sits in the dry season. The sea is warm enough for swimming, and the evenings are warm enough that a sweater rarely leaves the suitcase.
How does July compare with June and August?
June opens the summer with slightly milder heat that still suits beaches and clear water, so it's the easier pick if heat bothers you. August is typically the hottest month of the year, with plenty of sunshine and often little breeze, which raises the sunburn risk. July falls between them on the thermometer and is just as busy as the rest of high summer. For sightseeing in cooler weather and thinner crowds, April, May and October are better bets.
Is July a good time to visit Greece?
For a beach vacation, yes. For a quiet one, not really. July is high season. In July, families head to Greece, and many beach resorts, the islands in particular, get crowded, while popular sightseeing spots can fill up with visitors. Hotel rates are high nearly everywhere, and bargains are rare. To ease the crush, pick an island with relatively fewer tourists, such as Zakynthos.
Visitor numbers climb quickly once July begins, so book hotels and flights as early as you can.
What should you pack for Greece in July?
Pack light. Breathable clothes do the work: T-shirts, shorts, skirts and summer dresses. Sunglasses, a hat and plenty of sunscreen are daily gear, and sun-protective clothing adds extra cover. Bring swimwear, a beach towel and goggles if you like to see what's under the surface. Many Mediterranean beaches are strewn with small rocks, so sandals or water shoes will save your feet. If you plan to take a lot of pictures outdoors, a small fan keeps your phone or camera from overheating.
What is there to do in Greece in July?
Mostly, get in the water. Crete has some wonderful beaches, and in Santorini you can cruise through the volcanic crater. Zakynthos, the fourth largest island in Greece, draws visitors with its lovely beaches, clear seas and plenty of things to do on the water. Boat trips there head to the Blue Caves and the Shipwreck, with swimming stops along the way, and divers in the Blue Caves can spot sea turtles. Paddle boarding is popular too. Island hopping by cruiser or yacht catches cooling breezes, though July isn't the best month for sailing. Kids are happiest splashing in the sea or a hotel pool, which makes this an easy family month. When you swim, watch for sea anemones and jellyfish, which can sting.
Greece comes alive at night. In Athens, the Plaka neighborhood is the spot for food, local handicrafts and street performers. Santorini is a lovely place to watch the sun go down over the water at dusk. Ios, Mykonos, Paros and Santorini are the party islands, where guest DJs make the rounds, clubs are at their busiest and the seaside bars and cafes of Mykonos fill up. The fun can get rowdy, so travelers after quiet evenings may want to look elsewhere.
July also brings festivals. The Hippocratia Festival on Kos begins in July and runs all summer, with art exhibitions, concerts and theater. The Hydra Puppet Festival draws puppeteers to the island of Hydra. Kavala hosts the Philippi Festival, the second-oldest in the country after the one at Epidaurus, with classical and modern theater, dance and music held in the ancient theater of Philippi. The Sani Festival at the Sani Resort in Halkidiki offers a month of cinema, music and theater that runs into August.
What do Americans need to enter Greece?
U.S. citizens can enter Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date. Don't travel on a passport you've reported lost or stolen: you'll be refused entry and may be sent back to where you departed. Be ready to show proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket if asked. Once in the country, carry your passport or another photo ID at all times.
Is Greece safe, and how do you get around in July?
Greece is a generally safe destination, though petty crime is common at popular tourist spots. Pickpockets and purse snatchers work public transportation, especially the metro. Ferry companies add more services in summer to keep up with demand. Transportation strikes are common, though, and can interrupt ferries, airports, taxis and city transit, so leave some slack around any connection that matters. On public transportation, a traveler without a ticket, with the wrong ticket, or who forgets to validate it could be fined up to 60 times the basic fare.
If you rent a car, Greek law requires both a valid U.S. driver's license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit. Greece has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the European Union, so drive with care. Forest fires are common in the dry summer months and occasionally close roads, so check local conditions before a long drive. Thieves target rental cars for passports, valuables and luggage, so take them with you whenever you park.
