Delphi sits on the slopes of Mount Parnassus in central Greece, about 112 miles (180 km) from Athens. Most visitors reach Delphi by road, choosing between a KTEL intercity bus, a rental car, or a guided day tour with transfers. Each one gets you there in roughly the same time. They differ in hassle, cost and freedom.

Is there a ferry, flight or train to Delphi?
No. Delphi has no airport, no port and no train station. The KTEL bus is the direct public transport link from Athens. There is one rail workaround: take a train to Tithorea, then a taxi up to Delphi. It takes a little longer and costs more than the bus. The routes described here all start in Athens.
How do you get to Delphi from Athens?
Whichever way you go, expect 2 to 3 hours each way. Most of the drive runs on multilane highway, mainly the E75. The last 30 minutes climb into the mountains.
- KTEL bus: a budget-friendly option, with several departures a day from the Liossion terminal.
- Rental car: it gives you the freedom to set your own pace, and it makes adding the monastery of Hosios Loukas simple.
Guided day tour
For a first visit, a tour is the easiest choice. You don't have to plan any of the transport. Depending on the ticket, you're picked up at a central point in Athens or at your hotel, then you ride about 2.5 hours each way in an air-conditioned bus. You can still wander on your own if you'd rather.
Most tours also make at least one stop along the way, which is hard to manage on public transport. A popular stop is free time in Arachova, a pretty hillside town.
The companies are fairly similar. What you're really choosing is the format:
- Standard group day trips.
- Small-group or premium versions.
- Private tours. These cost more per person but give you more say, such as where to have lunch.
- Tours that add the UNESCO-listed monastery of Hosios Loukas.
- Multi-day tours that go on to Meteora, or to Mycenae, Epidaurus and Olympia.
KTEL bus
Intercity KTEL buses link Delphi with Athens, Livadia, Itea and nearby towns. The official journey time from Athens is about 2.5 hours, but many timetables show closer to three, so plan on the longer figure. Several buses run every day. They fill up, especially in the summer peak, so book three to four days ahead if you can.
Buses leave from the KTEL Liossion terminal in northern Athens. To get there by metro, change at Monastiraki to the green line toward Kifissia and get off at Kato Patissia. From there it's about a 0.6-mile (1 km) walk or a short taxi ride. If you're coming straight from the airport, the X93 bus also stops at the terminal.
You can buy tickets at the station or on the bus company's website. Online, search for "Delfi" with an F. Some buses stop right at the Delphi Museum, and for those you search "Mouseio Delfwn."
Plan the trip home before you set off sightseeing. Delphi has no bus station building. For return times or a ticket, go into the restaurant called "in Delphi" on Apollonos Street, a few steps from where the Athens bus drops you. Arrangements can change, so ask locally when you arrive. The bus back to Athens leaves from the other side of the road, directly opposite your drop-off point.
A day trip by bus works if you catch an early departure. If you'd like a slower pace, spend a night and enjoy the town's famously mystical mood after the crowds leave.
Rental car
The drive from Athens takes 2 to 2.5 hours, with about half of it on the E75 highway. Livadia is a good place to stop for a break.
A car lets you explore the area on your own schedule. The big draw is Hosios Loukas, a UNESCO-listed monastery roughly 40 minutes from Delphi on the way back toward Athens. It's easy to stop there on the way home.
Parking takes a little planning. There's no parking lot at the archaeological site. The few spaces outside the Delphi Archaeological Museum fill up, and the other official options are farther away. Free street parking runs along the main road in town, and there's also a free lot farther along. Both can be full at busy times.
Which option should you pick?
- First visit: take a guided tour.
- Tight budget: take the KTEL bus and catch an early departure.
- Fastest: drive or join a tour. Both take about 2 to 2.5 hours.
- Want to add Hosios Loukas or Meteora: rent a car, or book a tour that includes them.
How do you book a Delphi day tour?
Book online ahead of time, and read exactly what the ticket includes before you pay. Check the pickup point, whether a live guide comes along, whether site entry is included or optional, and whether there's a lunch stop. Some options use an audio guide instead of a live guide. A few offer a virtual reality audio guide for the site and museum.
How do you get around Delphi once you arrive?
You won't need a car in town, because the main sights are close together. The Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia (check whether it has reopened before you go) is a 10-minute walk east of the museum along the main road, or a 2-minute drive. Inside the archaeological site, the path climbs uphill through the ruins to the theater and then the stadium at the top. Wear shoes with good grip.
For rides around Delphi and the wider Corinth Gulf area, Giannis of TAXI DELPHI charges fixed prices instead of using a meter (+306932977953).
If you're driving on from Delphi, Vasileon Pavlou and Friederikis Street heads east toward Arachova, Livadia, Thebes and Athens. Apollonos Street heads west. From there, roads go north to Chrisso, Amfissa and Bralos, and west to Itea, Galaxidi, Nafpaktos and Antirio.
What does the U.S. State Department say about driving and transport in Greece?
If you plan to drive, Greek law requires you to carry both a valid U.S. driver's license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit. Greece has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the European Union. Talking or texting on a phone while driving is illegal. Thieves target rental cars, so don't leave your passport, valuables or bags in the car.
On public transportation, riding without a valid ticket, or forgetting to validate it, can bring a fine of up to 60 times the basic fare. Transportation strikes can disrupt traffic, buses and taxis. Forest fires are common in the dry summer months and sometimes close roads.
What should you do before you go?
Bring sun protection and water. The site can get very hot, although there are a few shady spots to rest. The site has a small cafe at the museum, and for a full meal many visitors head to Delphi town or to Arachova, about a ten-minute drive away. Admission is €20 full price or €10 reduced, and the ticket covers both the archaeological site and the museum. The day before you leave Athens, check for transport strikes and confirm the departure time of the last bus back.
