Crete in April: Weather, Crowds and What to Do

April is one of the loveliest months on Crete for walking, ruins, wine and long lunches. The days are warm, the hillsides are green and full of wildflowers, and the island hasn't filled up yet. Swimming in the sea takes some nerve, but hiking, sightseeing and wine touring are all pleasant in April.

What is the weather like in Crete in April?

Crete weather from March to May (long-term averages)
Month Average high Average low Sea Rainfall Sunshine per day
March 63°F (17°C) 50°F (10°C) 60°F (16°C) 1.9 in (48 mm) 6.3 h
April 68°F (20°C) 54°F (12°C) 62°F (17°C) 0.9 in (24 mm) 8.1 h
May 75°F (24°C) 60°F (16°C) 66°F (19°C) 0.5 in (12 mm) 10.0 h

Afternoons are pleasantly warm, just right for strolling a harbor or climbing around an archaeological site without wilting. The sun is bright and the UV index runs high, even on days that don't feel hot.

The sea is the catch. The sea is still chilly in April, so if a swim matters to you, book a hotel with a heated pool. On a warm afternoon, a beach is still a fine place to read and soak up the sun.

Evenings cool down properly and the breeze picks up after dark, though dinner outdoors is still a pleasure. Showers turn up on a handful of days, more often early in the month, and they tend to be short, with sun close behind. The mountains running east to west across the island block the northwesterly winds, so the south coast is usually hotter and drier than the north.

How does April compare with March and May?

March is mild but wetter, with cool nights, and many coastal resorts are still closed. Hikers and sightseers can enjoy it if they pack for rain. April is drier, sunnier and warmer, and the countryside is at its greenest.

May changes a lot from start to finish. Early May can still bring cool, overcast days, while late May turns consistently sunny and warm, sometimes hot. The sea warms a few degrees, though it may still be too cool for many swimmers, and the island gets noticeably busier as the month goes on.

Is April a good time to visit Crete?

Yes, if your trip is built around hiking, sightseeing, wineries and food. Crowds are thin, and Heraklion, Chania and Rethymno stay active through the year because many locals live there. Early in the month, smaller resorts can be very quiet, with enough open to get by and not much going on, so base yourself in a bigger town such as Chania, Rethymno or Agios Nikolaos.

Hotels cost much less than in summer, while transportation, food and drink prices barely change through the year. Easter is the exception. When it falls in April, demand for flights and rooms jumps, and prices follow. Check the date before you choose yours, and book early if your trip overlaps it.

If beach days are the whole point, aim for late May or June. In a warm year the last days of April can bring a few beach days, a happy bonus with no guarantee attached.

What is there to do in Crete in April?

Spring wildflowers and fresh greenery make country walks a joy. From Chania, take the bus to Rethymno and spend an afternoon wandering its lanes, or head to Heraklion for Knossos and the archaeological museum. With a rental car, Crete's wine country and the Lassithi Plateau, with its charming villages, are within reach.

The Samaria Gorge is the island's great hike, about 10 miles (16 km) through a biosphere reserve, with narrow passages walled by rock almost 1,640 feet (500 meters) high.

Throughout Holy Week, rites are held across the island, and the Saturday ends with a big fireworks show. On Easter Sunday and Monday, towns and villages feast on roasted lamb and local drinks, each in its own way.

Elounda is a luxury resort with views of the lagoon and the island-fortress of Spinalonga, and it makes a lovely stop on your trip.

What should you pack for Crete in April?

Think layers. Bring light summer clothes for warm afternoons: t-shirts, shorts, a sundress. Add a pullover or cardigan for evenings and cooler days, and a light raincoat or small umbrella for the odd shower.

Comfortable walking shoes will carry you over trails and ancient stones. Add a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and a refillable water bottle. A swimsuit still earns its place, especially if your hotel has a heated pool.

What do Americans need to enter Greece?

U.S. citizens can enter Greece without a visa for up to 90 days of tourism or business. Your passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure date, and you should be ready to show proof of sufficient funds and a return or onward ticket if asked. A passport that has been reported lost or stolen won't be accepted for entry, even if you later found it.

How do you get around Crete in April?

KTEL intercity buses are cheap and generally punctual. From Heraklion airport, take a bus to the city bus station, then catch a separate bus on to Chania, about three hours in all. For wine country and mountain villages, a rental car makes life easier. Greek law requires a valid U.S. driver's license, and insurance companies may require an international driver’s permit. Picking up and dropping off in different towns can cost extra, so check before you book.

Greece is generally safe, but petty crime is common at popular tourist sites, and thieves break into rental cars to steal passports, valuables and luggage, so take care of what you leave inside.

Strikes and demonstrations can be called with little notice and can halt buses, taxis, ports and airports, so leave some slack around your travel days.
