Corfu in October: Weather, Sea Temperature, Ohi Day and What to Do

In October the olive groves above Corfu Town start to feel like work sites, with nets spread under the trees and the island’s light turning softer over the Old Town’s arcades. Cafés on the Liston still set out their tables, and the talk is of the season winding down and of the national holiday that falls at the end of the month. It is a month for walking the old streets, eating island dishes and still getting into the sea.

What is the weather like in Corfu in October?

October in Corfu is still warm by day, with a clear step toward autumn: the days shorten, the rain becomes a real part of the month and the sea holds on to summer’s heat.

Month Average high (°F) Average low (°F) Precipitation (in) Days with 1 mm or more of precipitation Daylight on the 15th Sea (°F)
September 81.0 65.8 4.33 8.4 12 h 23 min 80.1
October 73.9 60.3 5.53 9.6 11 h 04 min 75.0
November 65.5 53.2 8.46 12.7 9 h 56 min 70.3

With rain on nearly a third of the days, a light rain jacket earns its place in the bag, and plans for the outdoors are best held loosely. The wettest stretch of the year is still ahead, so October sits in the middle: enough dry days for beaches and trails, enough wet ones that a museum or a long lunch becomes part of the trip.

The lows stay mild, which means an evening meal outdoors in a sweater rather than a coat. Warm layers matter more as the month goes on, and sun protection still has a job on the days the sky is clear. The daylight has shrunk noticeably since September, so the walk back from a viewpoint or a village is something to plan around the clock rather than leave to chance.

Can you swim in Corfu in October?

Yes, the sea is warm enough for a proper swim, with the surface near Corfu averaging 75.0°F, a temperature that people find comfortable once they are in. It has slipped from the heat of late summer, so the first step in feels fresher than it did a month ago.

The beach outings the island is known for are the ones along the coasts where the package resorts sit: the north, the east and the southwest, plus the southern resort of Kavos with its tourist facilities. On the west side, the road from Corfu Town toward Palaiokastritsa leads to the coast around that village. Inland, Aqualand in Central Corfu is one of the biggest water parks in the world, with 51 slides, pools and other games, though a visitor should expect to choose between the sea and the park depending on the day.

Medea’s Cave belongs to the island’s myths, since Jason and Medea are said to have married there, and it gives a coastal walk a story to go with it. Boat trips from the island’s ports are part of the autumn routine too, with ferries linking Corfu to Gaios on Paxoi, to Igoumenitsa and to Sarandë in neighboring Albania.

What to do in Corfu in October

Ohi Day is the date that marks the month. It is a national public holiday in Greece, celebrated throughout the country and in Greek communities around the world, and in Corfu Town it turns the squares and main streets into places of flags, school groups and families in their best clothes. Even if you only watch from a café table, it shows you the island as its residents see themselves.

October is also the season when food follows the countryside. The olive harvest begins to take over village life, and the island’s tables lean on dishes that Corfiots cook all year: pastitsada (meat in a spiced tomato sauce over pasta), sofrito (veal in white wine and garlic) and bourdeto (fish in a peppery red sauce). A glass of kumquat liqueur, the island’s own citrus drink, goes with the end of a meal, and ginger beer in the local style is a soft alternative.

Corfu Town and its museums

The Old Town is the place to spend the wetter hours of the month, because it gives you arcades to walk under, narrow lanes of tall houses and squares where the cafés keep serving. The Liston, with its row of arches, is the place for a coffee and for watching the town go by. The pace here changes with the season: fewer people hurry, more people sit.

Among its displays is a relief of Dionysus Bacchus, and the collection ties the island to the myths and the ancient settlement that gave the place its name. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born in Corfu, a detail the town likes to mention as you wander its older quarters.

The Achilleion

The Achilleion is a summer palace built on Corfu by Elisabeth of Bavaria, known as Sissi, Empress of Austria. After her death Wilhelm II of Germany bought it, so the house passed from one imperial owner to another. The road to it is the EO25, which runs southbound from the city and ends in a loop.

A visit gives you terraces, statues and gardens that look out over the island, and in autumn the garden setting suits a walk between showers. Wear shoes for the paths and keep a rain jacket in your bag, since the weather can change during an outing.

The west coast and the Corfu Trail

The EO24 leaves the city westbound toward Palaiokastritsa, and it is the road for a day on that side of the island. October gives you a sea still warm enough to enter and a landscape that has lost its summer dryness, with greener hills as the rains return.

For walkers, the Corfu Trail is a long-distance footpath covering the full length of the island. The route is well signed and a book accompanies it, so you can walk a section without committing to the whole. In a month with more rain, pick the stretches you can leave when the sky closes in, and plan to finish before daylight fades.

The island’s north-east coast is lined with large villas developed by a few British holiday companies, and the resorts of the north, east and southwest give you a different, more beach-based Corfu if the old town and the countryside are not your pace.

A two-day itinerary for Corfu in October

Day 1 belongs to Corfu Town. Start in the Old Town lanes with a coffee and something baked, then walk the arcades of the Liston and the squares around it. Leave the Archaeological Museum for the part of the day when the weather decides, so that a shower sends you indoors to the Dionysus relief rather than ruining a plan.

Lunch is for a taverna in the Old Town, where pastitsada or sofrito suits a month with a touch of autumn in the air. In the afternoon, take the EO25 south to the Achilleion and walk its terraces and gardens. Return to town for an evening meal, a glass of kumquat liqueur and a last stroll while the lights come on, since the days are now noticeably shorter.

Day 2 heads west. Take the EO24 toward Palaiokastritsa and spend the morning on the coast there, with a swim in the warm sea if the day is dry. Follow with lunch at a seaside taverna, and use the afternoon for a section of the Corfu Trail or a look at the countryside where the olive nets are going down.

If rain sets in on either day, shift to the covered options: the museum, a long café stop in the Old Town, or Aqualand’s pools and slides if you want to stay wet on purpose. Keep the evening for a dinner back in town, ideally somewhere with a table indoors.

Is Corfu busy in October?

Corfu in October is in a transition between the resort summer and the quieter months, and the character of the place depends on where you stay. The coasts with package resorts, on the north, east and southwest, and the southern resort of Kavos are built for visitors, while Corfu Town runs as an ordinary island city all year.

What changes in October is the weather and the daylight rather than any single number of visitors. Rain is more frequent, the days are shorter and the sea has cooled from its peak, which shapes how people spend their time. Beach hours give way to long lunches, museums and walks, and the Old Town’s cafés become the center of the day.

Ferries to Gaios on Paxoi, to Igoumenitsa, to Sarandë and as far as Patras keep the island connected, and the Flying Dolphins high-speed boats run to Igoumenitsa and Sarandë. For the holiday at the end of the month, expect the town’s attention to turn to Ohi Day, a day when people from the island gather for the celebrations.

What to pack for Corfu in October

October asks for a bag that covers sun, rain and a cooler evening, since Corfu has all three in the same month.

  • A light rain jacket, because rain falls on nearly a third of the days.
  • A sweater or warm layer for evening meals outdoors.
  • A swimsuit, since the sea is still warm for swimming.
  • Sun protection for the clear afternoons.
  • Shoes for walking, for the Old Town lanes, the Achilleion’s garden paths and sections of the Corfu Trail.

Good to know before you go

Ohi Day is a national public holiday in Greece, so expect the day to be marked in Corfu Town. Every Sunday of the year is also a public holiday under Greek law, which is worth remembering when you plan a day around a particular stop.

Rain is a regular part of October, and the days are shorter than they were in September, so build the day around daylight and keep an indoor option ready. The Corfu Trail is well signed, but a wet day can change which section you choose to walk.

Corfu in October vs September and November

Moving the trip four weeks earlier brings you to September, with a warmer sea, fewer rainy days and long daylight. It is the choice for swimmers who want the water at its warmest and who care more about beach days than about the olive harvest or Ohi Day.

Moving four weeks later brings you to November, when the rain is at its heaviest of the three months and daylight is the shortest, and the sea has cooled further. The upside is a different island, with the Old Town and the museums as the main attraction, and a landscape greener after the rains.

October sits between them. Choose September for swimming, November for indoor Corfu and October if you want a mix of both, with the holiday at the end of the month as a bonus.

Is October a good time to visit Corfu?

The sea is still warm, the highs are comfortable, and the island’s food and holiday calendar give the month a character of its own.

It is a poorer fit for anyone whose plan depends on a dry week at the beach, since rain is common enough to interrupt. Those travelers are better served by September. On arrival, spend your first hours in Corfu Town, then decide on the coast and the Achilleion once you have seen what the sky does. What is special about October in Corfu is the overlap: a sea that still welcomes you, olive nets spread under the trees, a table of pastitsada and a town preparing for Ohi Day.
