FLORIDA · AUGUST · WEKIWA SPRINGS
Two numbers set up an August visit. The air averages a 91.6°F high through the month at the nearest official station, and the spring itself read 75.6°F (24.2°C) on the USGS gauge, a figure it holds close to every day of the calendar. Sixteen degrees of separation between the parking lot and the water is the whole reason people drive out here in high summer.
The price of that swim is weather and company. August normals carry 7.69 inches of rain across 11.5 days with measurable precipitation, and the state counts 325 parking spaces at Wekiwa Springs State Park. When the lot fills, the gate closes, whatever the plan was for the afternoon. For the park outside of one month, our Wekiwa Springs guide has the year-round detail.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · WEKIWA SPRINGS IN AUGUST
August pairs 91.6°F afternoons with spring water at 75.6°F, and the only real planning problem is fitting inside 325 parking spaces before the gate closes.
SWIM WATER 75.6°F · 11.5 RAIN DAYS · 325 PARKING SPACES
Go for: swimming when the air is at its hottest, a dawn loop off 13.7 miles of trail, and a paddle on 15.9 miles of marked river before the afternoon sky builds.
Think twice before: planning a long afternoon hike, booking non-refundable inside hurricane season, or arriving late on a summer weekend with 325 spaces to share.

August lands in the middle of Florida’s wet season, the stretch our best time to visit guide marks May through October. Most travelers fly into Orlando International Airport and drive out from there, and our getting around guide handles the rental desk and the electronic tolls. The spring water holds near 75.6°F through all of it.
Wekiwa Springs weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | August |
|---|---|
| Average high | 91.6°F |
| Average low | 73.7°F |
| Precipitation | 7.69 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.5 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 2.3 |
| Daylight on August 15 | 13 hours 12 minutes |
| Spring water | 75.6°F |
The air figures come from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, 1991 to 2020 monthly normals, station USW00012815 at Orlando International Airport. That is a real thermometer in open ground about 27 miles from the spring, not a reanalysis grid cell averaged over a wide box. It gives August an average high of 91.6°F, an average low of 73.7°F and 7.69 inches of rain. Every air figure here belongs to that station, and the station describes the air only: the water below the surface has no season.
Rain reaches the gauge on 11.5 August days at 0.10 inch or more, roughly three days in eight bringing something you would notice. On 2.3 of those days an inch or more falls. That is the kind of rain that ends an afternoon outdoors rather than interrupting it, and Florida’s wet season delivers it on the near-daily afternoon schedule the state is known for.
Between the 91.6°F high and the 73.7°F low sits 17.9 degrees of spread, which is small by continental standards and still enough to make 7 a.m. the pleasant hour. Pack for wet and warm rather than for cold: two towels, a dry bag for the 2.3 inch-days, a hat for the walk in from the lot, and a change of shirt left in the trunk for the drive back.
On August 15 the sun comes up at 6:54 a.m. and sets at 8:06 p.m. local time, 13 hours and 12 minutes of daylight. That buys a trail hour before the heat, a long swim through the middle of the day and light on the water past 7:30 in the evening. We could not verify the park’s closing time, so read sunset as a light figure and not as an access guarantee.
How warm is Wekiwa Springs in August?
The month runs from an average high of 91.6°F down to an average low of 73.7°F, a spread of 17.9 degrees. The spring sat at 75.6°F (24.2°C) when the USGS gauge at station 02234600 was read on September 11, 2026. Put together, the water is about two degrees warmer than a typical August night and 16 degrees cooler than a typical August afternoon. One caveat on that 75.6: it is a single instantaneous reading, not a monthly mean of daily maxima like the sea-surface tables you may be used to, which run a touch warmer than a 24-hour average.
In practice, the day splits in two. At 7 a.m. the air sits in the mid-70s and a T-shirt covers a loop off the 13.7 miles of hiking trail. By 2 p.m. the thermometer is past 90 and the only sensible outfit is a swimsuit. Bring a hat for the open walk from the lot, more water than feels necessary, and a dry layer for the air-conditioned drive home.
Frost never enters an August conversation in central Florida. The normals record no freezing night in the month, and an average low of 73.7°F stands nearly 42 degrees above freezing. The one cold thing on the property is the spring, and at 75.6°F it is the good kind: cool enough to catch your breath on entry, never cold enough to keep you out.
How busy is Wekiwa Springs in August? Parking, crowds and booking ahead
August is the tail end of the school summer and the middle of the wet season, and that is as far as we can take the pricing. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate figures for the area, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we do have is a capacity number, and it is the one that decides a Saturday: 325 parking spaces, counted by the state. When the lot fills, the gate closes.
That rule changes what booking means. We could not verify a day-use reservation system, so the lever you control is your arrival hour rather than a confirmation email. For a bed, the usual summer-weekend logic applies: lock a room several weeks out if you want a short drive to the gate, and keep it refundable inside hurricane season. Our where to stay guide covers the Orlando-area bases, and what a Florida week costs prices the rest of the trip.
On tax, we publish no number. We could not verify a lodging-tax rate here, and a percentage read off another Florida county does not transfer. The same caution applies at the entrance: the state park site returned a 403 to our automated reads on September 11, 2026, so we carry no entrance fee and no opening hour, and we will not borrow either from a different park.
Money changes one thing in August, and it is the bed. A room close enough to put you at the entrance early converts the whole day: you swim before the heat peaks, before the 325 spaces are spoken for, and you are free to leave when the storm builds. A rental car is the other unavoidable line for most visitors, priced in our getting around guide. Beyond those two, nothing here is something we can price.
Things to do in Wekiwa Springs in August

August gives the steepest contrast of the three months covered here between what you walk in and what you swim in: 91.6°F air over 75.6°F water, sixteen degrees apart. Come winter the air drops toward the water and a swim becomes a decision rather than a relief. This is the stretch of the year when getting in is the point of the drive, and when a long paddle is planned around the swim waiting at the end of it.
Counted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in its 2024 facilities inventory, Wekiwa Springs State Park holds one designated swimming area, one canoe, kayak and tube launch, 15.9 miles of paddling trail, 13.7 miles of hiking trail, 1,435 feet of boardwalk and those 325 parking spaces. One swim zone serves the entire lot, and that ratio explains why the water looks busier than the trails ever do.
None of that equipment changes with the calendar, and neither does the spring. The air does, and that is the season. At 91.6°F, the 13.7 miles of hiking trail turn into a dawn or dusk proposition, and the 1,435 feet of boardwalk become a five-minute walk instead of an afternoon. The paddling trail shifts too: 15.9 miles in August is a full day with a serious water supply, and the same distance in a cooler month is simply a long paddle.
On what is free, we can only report what we could read. The state park site did not answer our automated requests, so we name no entrance fee, no free day and no manatee count. Daylight costs nothing and there is plenty of it: 13 hours 12 minutes on August 15, starting at 6:54 a.m.
Wekiwa Springs in August: two-day itinerary
Day one starts at the gate. Sunrise on August 15 is 6:54 a.m., and an early arrival puts you inside the 325 spaces with hours to spare. Take a loop off the 13.7 miles of trail while the air is still in the 70s and be back at the water by 10. Swim through late morning at 75.6°F, eat somewhere with a roof at midday, then treat the 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. window as the likeliest to be rained on, given 11.5 wet days in the month.
Day two belongs to the river. The single launch feeds 15.9 miles of paddling trail, and an out-and-back that turns around by 11 a.m. keeps you off the water for the afternoon. If the sky closes in, the day reshapes without much loss: 1,435 feet of boardwalk takes five minutes between showers, and Orlando’s indoor list sits 27 miles away in our Florida things to do guide. Light holds until 8:06 p.m., so a second swim after the storm usually still fits.
Wekiwa Springs in August vs July and September
| July | August | September | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 92.0°F | 91.6°F | 89.6°F |
| Average low | 73.2°F | 73.7°F | 72.4°F |
| Precipitation | 7.46 in | 7.69 in | 6.37 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.5 | 11.5 | 9.2 |
| Spring water | near 75.6°F | 75.6°F | near 75.6°F |
The three months sit within 2.4 degrees of one another at the top: July at 92.0°F, August at 91.6°F, September at 89.6°F, all from the same NOAA station normals. Rain separates them more than heat does. July takes 7.46 inches and August 7.69, both spread across 11.5 days at 0.10 inch or more, while September drops to 6.37 inches over 9.2 such days. The spring reads near 75.6°F in all three.
Move four weeks later and you trade two degrees off the afternoon high and 2.3 fewer wet days against a month whose statistical storm peak is September 10. Move four weeks earlier into July and you gain four tenths of a degree of heat, keep the same 11.5 wet days, and share the park with school holidays in full swing. September is the better weather bet and the worse insurance bet.
Is August a good time to visit Wekiwa Springs?
Yes, if the trip is built around getting in the water. A 91.6°F afternoon is precisely what makes 75.6°F feel like a reward, and the swim zone, the launch and the paddling trail all perform best when the air is punishing. No, if you came to walk 13.7 miles at your own pace in the middle of the day, or if you book non-refundable travel and would rather not spend a week watching the tropics.
For those readers, September is the nearest fix: the high falls to 89.6°F, rain to 6.37 inches, wet days to 9.2, and the spring stays where it always is. Further out, the dry season from November through April gives the trail network back and takes the swim comfort away, cooler air over the same 75.6°F water.
Of the three months set out above, August and July give the steepest fall from the parking lot to the spring pool, sixteen degrees, and August adds 13 hours 12 minutes of daylight on the 15th to spend in it.
The last word
Book the bed within a short drive, set the alarm for a 6:54 a.m. sunrise, and August works exactly as advertised. One fact for the road out: Florida law names this spring by hand. Statute 373.802(5) defines an Outstanding Florida Spring as every historic first-magnitude spring plus six picked individually, De Leon, Peacock, Poe, Rock Springs, Wekiwa and Gemini. The state protected it without waiting for it to be big enough, and the 75.6°F you step into on the hottest afternoon of your trip is the product of that decision as much as of the limestone.
