GINNIE SPRINGS · APRIL · 72.7°F WATER
A USGS gauge inside the spring read 72.7°F on September 11, 2026, and it reads close to that every day of the year. That stubborn number is why a date matters here at all: the water has no season, the air above it does. In April the nearest official thermometer averages a high of 81.5°F and a low of 55.5°F. The 8.8 degrees between the afternoon air and the water is what you feel walking in, and what dries you off climbing out.
What April will not hand you is a warm night. The normal low of 55.5°F runs 7.1 degrees under May’s, and that gap decides whether a tent is a good idea or a long shiver. April does give the driest stretch of the spring at 2.74 inches of rain. Fees, beds and drive times sit outside the calendar: our Florida trip cost guide and our lodging notes carry those.

APRIL AT A GLANCE · GINNIE SPRINGS
April pairs 81.5°F afternoons with water near 72.7°F and the fewest wet days of the spring, and charges for it with a 55.5°F dawn.
AVG HIGH 81.5°F · AVG LOW 55.5°F · 2.74 IN OF RAIN · WATER NEAR 72.7°F
Go for: the widest comfortable gap of the season between warm air and cool water, 3.8 wet days against March’s 5.3, and light until 7:59 pm in mid-month.
Think twice before: banking on an admission price or an opening hour. We could not verify either, and fees vary by spring and by season.

April closes the dry season our Florida calendar runs from November through April, and the rain totals agree: 2.74 inches this month against 3.49 in March. Build the nights around a weekend and the drive around the light, because the sun is still up at 7:59 pm in the middle of the month.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information publishes the 1991-2020 April normals for station USW00012816, Gainesville Regional Airport: an average high of 81.5°F, an average low of 55.5°F and 2.74 inches of precipitation. Every air figure here comes from that station, and the station sits about 48 miles from the spring. It is a real thermometer at a real airport rather than a modeled grid cell, and it measures air only. The water carries its own number, taken in the spring itself.
Measurable rain is rarer than the 2.74-inch total suggests. The normals count 3.8 days at 0.10 inch or more, which works out to roughly one day in eight, plus 0.8 days at an inch or more, so a genuine soaking turns up in about four Aprils out of five. Most Aprils therefore give you one damp stretch inside an otherwise dry week rather than a run of gray days.
Twenty-six degrees separate 81.5°F and 55.5°F, and that spread is the single reason people underpack for this month. A fleece and long pants cover the first two hours after sunrise. A swimsuit covers late morning through the afternoon. A second dry towel covers the drive home, when wet hair meets a cooling car at seven in the evening.
On April 15 the sun rises at 7:01 am and sets at 7:59 pm local time, giving 12 hours 57 minutes of daylight. Usable light outlasts the warm air: by eight the temperature is already falling toward that 55.5°F low while the sky is still bright. Anyone driving back the same evening keeps real light for the first hour of the road.
How warm is Ginnie Springs in April?
The month’s two poles are 81.5°F and 55.5°F, twenty-six degrees apart, and the water sits between them at 72.7°F. That water figure is one instantaneous reading from USGS station 02322400, taken on September 11, 2026, not a monthly average. Quoting a September measurement in an April guide works precisely because the number barely moves: spring flow surfaces at nearly the same temperature in January as in July. The variable in April is entirely overhead.
At half past seven in the morning the air is in the fifties and the water is warmer than the air, so the hard part is getting out rather than getting in. By mid-afternoon, with the air near 81.5°F, the same 72.7°F reads as cold for the first ten seconds and as perfect for the next ten minutes. Pack for both ends: the fleece you want at breakfast, the shade you want after lunch.
On freezing nights, the series we read gives monthly averages and not a tally of nights at or below 32°F, so we count none and quote no figure for April. The normals do give a low of 55.5°F, a full 5.8 degrees above March’s 49.7°F, which is why April is the first spring month most people sleep outdoors without regretting it.
How busy is Ginnie Springs in April? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for this corner of north Florida, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. The calendar still says something useful: April is the last month of the dry season, and school spring breaks land across March and April, the stretch our Florida orientation flags as the state’s loudest and busiest.
That puts the pressure on weekends rather than on the month as a whole. Hold a Saturday in April weeks ahead and treat a Tuesday as the release valve. If the trip starts with a flight, our airport notes and getting-around guide carry the real drive times from Orlando and Tampa. Capacity and reservation rules at the spring we could not verify, so call before you count on walking up.
We could not verify a local lodging-tax rate, so we quote no percentage and no nightly total. When a booking page breaks out a tax line at checkout, that line is the only figure we would trust for your own dates, because rates are set county by county and a number copied from Miami would not apply here.
One expense genuinely changes April, and it is the second night. A day trip drops you in the water during the warmest hours and gives the 55.5°F morning back to the highway. Two nights buys the early swim, when 72.7°F water is warmer than the air around it, and the long tail of light to 7:59 pm. Everything else in the budget is comfort rather than calendar.
Things to do in Ginnie Springs in April

April is the month whose arithmetic flips twice inside a single day. Afternoon air at 81.5°F sits 8.8 degrees above the water, warm enough to make the swim refreshing and the towel quick. March, with its 75.8°F high, leaves a margin of 3.1 degrees and a cold wait on the bank. May, at 87.4°F, leaves 14.7 degrees, and by then the water is the only reason to be outdoors at two in the afternoon.
Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection lists Ginnie Springs, alongside Peacock Springs, among the most popular and interesting springs diving destinations in the state. The temperature divers drop into is the 72.7°F that USGS station 02322400 recorded. Florida Statute 373.802(5) also defines a protected class called Outstanding Florida Springs: every historic first-magnitude spring as determined by the Florida Geological Survey, plus six springs named by hand in the law. We did not verify which of those lists carries Ginnie.
The flow surfaces at 72.7°F in April and at 72.7°F in February, so a wetsuit chosen for one month is the wetsuit for the other. What April changes is the surface: how long you can sit still in a wet suit, how much afternoon there is after the swim, and how fast gear dries on a table at 81.5°F. That drying speed is the practical difference between a March visit and this one.
On what any of it costs, our sources came up empty. We could not read an entrance fee, an opening hour or a manatee count for Ginnie Springs: the state parks site returned an error to automated reads on September 11, 2026, and the wildlife commission’s manatee pages render in the browser. Prices vary by spring and by season, so a figure copied from another park does not transfer. For where manatees gather and when, our manatee guide is the page to read.
Ginnie Springs in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise at 7:01 am makes a nine o’clock arrival comfortable in a fleece, with the air still climbing out of the fifties. Hold the first swim until late morning, once the air has left that 55.5°F start well behind. Eat at midday, swim again in the warmest hours near 81.5°F, and keep the last dry-off for around six, when there are still two hours of daylight in hand.
Day two flips the order: water first, packing second, road last, so the drive uses the bright end of a 12-hour-57-minute day. If the wet day lands, the normals say it is one of 3.8 such days and quite possibly the only one of the trip. Rain moves the lunch under cover and slows the drive. It does not touch the swim, since the spring reads 72.7°F whether the sky is clear or not.
Ginnie Springs in April vs March and May
| Measure | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 75.8°F | 81.5°F | 87.4°F |
| Average low | 49.7°F | 55.5°F | 62.6°F |
| Precipitation | 3.49 in | 2.74 in | 3.08 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 5.3 | 3.8 | 4.5 |
| Spring water | near 72.7°F | near 72.7°F | near 72.7°F |
| Afternoon air above the water | +3.1°F | +8.8°F | +14.7°F |
Across the three months the water holds still and the air does all the moving. March averages 75.8°F by day and 49.7°F at night, with 3.49 inches of rain spread over 5.3 wet days. April drops to 2.74 inches over 3.8 wet days and lifts the afternoon to 81.5°F. May pushes the high to 87.4°F and the night to 62.6°F, with rain back up to 3.08 inches and 4.5 wet days. April is the driest of the three on both counts.
Shifting back four weeks to March costs 5.7 degrees of afternoon and adds a day and a half of rain, and it buys nights 5.8 degrees cooler for anyone who sleeps better cold. Shifting forward to May buys 5.9 degrees of afternoon and a 62.6°F night for 0.7 more wet days. Those 7.1 degrees between April and May nights are the largest month-to-month gap of the three.
Is April a good time to visit Ginnie Springs?
Yes for anyone whose day is built on getting in and out of the water more than once: 81.5°F air over 72.7°F water is the most forgiving combination the spring season offers, and 3.8 wet days is the lowest count of the three months. No for campers who feel a 55.5°F dawn in their bones, and no for anyone who needs a published admission price or opening hour before committing, since neither could be verified.
If that describes you, May is the fix rather than March. A 62.6°F normal low is a different night outdoors entirely, an 87.4°F high turns the water into the reward instead of the test, and the penalty stays small: 3.08 inches of rain against 2.74, and 4.5 wet days against 3.8. Families weighing that trade will find the rest of the argument in our Florida with kids guide.
April alone delivers the dry column: 2.74 inches, 3.8 wet days, 12 hours 57 minutes of daylight on the 15th, and afternoons running 8.8 degrees above the water.
The last word
The decision here is a weekend, not a season. Pick the two nights, put the swim in late morning and the drive in the long light after seven, and accept the 55.5°F start as the price of the driest month of the spring. One thing is worth doing before you leave the house: USGS station 02322400 sits in the spring, its instantaneous readings are public, and the 72.7°F you are counting on can be checked the morning you load the car. Bring the fleece anyway.
