Somewhere above the forest floor, a harness clicks onto a cable, a guide gives a nod, and the canopy opens up as you step off the platform. Below you, the green of the rainforest rushes past, and the only sounds are the whir of the pulley and the birds calling out from the treetops. In Belize, that feeling is found on forested hillsides in the Stann Creek District and in the Cayo jungle, where zip lines are folded into larger days of waterfalls, caves and rivers.

Where can you zip line in Belize?
Two rainforest zip-lining options are Mayflower Bocawina National Park in the Stann Creek District and Chaa Creek’s cave-tubing combination in the Cayo jungle. Both options take place in rainforest settings.
Zip lining is a good fit for travelers who like a dose of adrenaline between slower days on the cayes or at a lodge. It also suits people who want to see the forest from a different angle, up among the crowns of the trees rather than looking up at them from a trail.
Mayflower Bocawina National Park
Mayflower Bocawina is a national park in the Stann Creek District, found at mile six on the Southern Highway. It was established in 2001 and is managed by the Friends of Mayflower Bocawina National Park. The park covers an estimated 7,000 acres of dense tropical forest, and it is listed as Category 2 on the IUCN list.
The zip lining here is offered as Bocawina Jungle Ziplining, one of the additional rainforest adventures at Hamanasi, the resort near Hopkins. Zip lining is only one reason to come. The park holds three waterfalls, three Maya temples that have been discovered so far, and an estimated 238 bird species, so a day here can easily mix a cable ride with a hike and some birdwatching.
Bocawina and Three Sisters falls sit close to each other and are reached by hiking around the mountain area. Antelope Falls is a more difficult hike up during the rainy season. Maintzunun and T’au Witz are a short distance from the visitor center, and the Maya Center stands on the road opposite it.
The Cayo jungle near Chaa Creek
In the Cayo jungle, Chaa Creek runs a Cave Tubing & Zip Lining tour. The zip line portion soars 80 feet above the forest floor, with five runs from treetop to treetop, and the adventure ends with a rappel back to the ground. The cables are professionally installed double cables.
Chaa Creek itself spreads across a 500-acre private nature reserve with miles of rainforest trails. That makes it a natural base for anyone who wants the zip line to be one chapter of a longer stay among the trees, the Macal River and the lodge’s own gardens.
What do the tours include?
Chaa Creek combines cave tubing and zip lining in a full-day tour, while Hamanasi lists Bocawina Jungle Ziplining as an additional rainforest adventure. The details differ between the Chaa Creek day and the Hamanasi arrangement.
The Cave Tubing & Zip Lining tour at Chaa Creek
This is a full-day tour that starts at 8:00 am. As the name says, it combines cave tubing with the zip line, and because of the aquatic side of the day, a change of dry clothing is required.
The mix of water and canopy gives the day a good rhythm: you spend part of it floating and part of it flying. It suits travelers who want one big outing and are happy to get wet and a little muddy along the way.
Bocawina Jungle Ziplining through Hamanasi
Hamanasi lists Bocawina Jungle Ziplining among its additional rainforest adventures. Additional adventures are scheduled based on interest and are subject to a minimum number of guests. If one is not included in a guest’s package, it can be added for an additional charge.
The scheduled adventures, by contrast, are included in the Reef & Rainforest Package. Red Bank Birding is a seasonal option, and the Monkey River Adventure is another additional one.
Other ways to fill the days around the zip line
At Chaa Creek, licensed naturalists lead guided walks and horseback rides on the rainforest trails, sharing insights about biodiversity and Maya history. Guests can also canoe on the Macal River, drifting through jungle scenery with birdsong and wildlife.
Inside the reserve you find the Natural History Centre, the Butterfly Farm and the Rainforest Medicine Trail, while the Hilltop Spa offers treatments with valley views. The activity list also includes bird watching tours, Belize Rainforest RTV Safari Tours, an Organic Farming Tour, a Creatures of the Night Tour, an Open Hearth Hands-On Culinary Experience and a Treasure Hunt. Meals draw on organic produce from the Maya organic farm and fresh breads from the lodge’s own bakery.
What should you know before you go?
Before booking a zip line in Belize, know the physical requirements, what to wear and what to pack. The Chaa Creek tour sets a minimum height of 40 inches and asks for a moderate to good fitness level, so it is not an outing for everyone in a family or group.
What to wear and bring
Long or short pants and sturdy protective footwear are recommended. Because the tour includes water, a change of dry clothing is required, so pack it in a bag that can stay dry while you tube.
- A hat and sunscreen for the open platforms.
- Water to drink along the way.
- Insect repellant for the forest.
- A camera.
- Raingear, if needed.
Fitness, season and weather
Moderate to good fitness matters because a zip line day is more than the cable. On the Chaa Creek tour, the day also includes time in the water and a rappel back to the ground. Anyone with doubts about the physical side should weigh them before choosing the full-day tour.
At Mayflower Bocawina, Antelope Falls is a more difficult hike up during the rainy season. Antelope Falls is a more difficult hike up during that time, and the same wet conditions can shape the trails to the other waterfalls. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, which is worth remembering when you plan a trip that depends on being outdoors.
Combining zip lining with the rest of your trip
Because zip lining here is usually part of a bigger day, it fits naturally with a stay in the Stann Creek District or the Cayo jungle. At Hamanasi, the included adventures give you a way to build a few days around the forest, with the zip line as an add-on. At Chaa Creek, the trails, the river and the gardens give the same effect on a single property.
Pairing a zip line day with a quieter one works well. A canoe on the Macal River or a walk to Bocawina Falls gives the legs and nerves a rest, and it keeps the trip from feeling like one continuous adrenaline push.
Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.
Zip line outings sit in the forest, so a hat, water and repellant do more for your day than any gadget. Keep your camera secure on the platforms, and pack the dry clothes the Chaa Creek tour asks for. Rain can arrive at any time of year in the rainforest, which is why raingear is on the packing list.
