On a gray morning in Miami, with the boarding line forming and the Caribbean already on your mind, the question is simple: who flies to Belize, and where do you end up when the wheels touch down? The short answer is that American Airlines flies the route from Miami year-round and lands you at the international airport serving Belize City, from which the cayes, the Cayo District and the southern coast all begin.

Which airlines fly from Miami to Belize?
American Airlines is the carrier that flies from Miami to Belize, and it does so year-round, so the route does not depend on a winter schedule the way several other connections do. If your plans are flexible about the month, Miami is the one gateway of this kind that stays on the map in every season, including the months of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
Other U.S. cities have their own links, and it helps to know them if you are comparing departure points or building a trip around a different hub. Delta flies from Atlanta and Southwest from Houston, both year-round. Alaska Air comes in from Seattle in the cooler months, and Sun Country from Minneapolis, which suits travelers escaping a northern winter. Air Canada adds Toronto for the same stretch of the year.
| Airline | From | When |
|---|---|---|
| American Airlines | Miami | Year-round |
| Delta Airlines | Atlanta | Year-round |
| Southwest Airlines | Houston | Year-round |
| Copa Airlines | Panama | Year-round |
| Alaska Air | Seattle | November through April |
| Sun Country Airlines | Minneapolis | December through April |
| Air Canada | Toronto | December through April |
Where American checks in on the Belize side
On the ground in Belize, American works from Terminal 2, the same terminal used by Delta, Southwest, Alaska Air, United, Air Canada and WestJet. Copa and Sun Country, along with the small regional carriers, use Terminal 1. Counters for every airline sit in these two terminals, so when you fly home the right door is the one marked for your airline.
Once you are in Belize, two local carriers, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air, run domestic flights from this same airport. They are the way many travelers continue on to the islands and towns after the long leg from Miami, and both are based at the airport as their hub.
Flying home from Belize City
Passengers departing are expected to arrive at least 3 hours before the scheduled flight, and the airport encourages 3 to 4 hours. That is a generous cushion, and it is worth planning your last morning around it so the final breakfast is unhurried rather than a sprint.
Two departure charges are listed for the airport: the Passenger Service Fee of US$53.50 and the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) fee of US$20.00. TSA PreCheck is not available at this airport, so plan on the standard security line.
Where do you land?
You land at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, in Ladyville, just outside Belize City, the largest city of Belize on the eastern coast of Central America. The airport carries the name of Philip S. W. Goldson, a title it received on February 7, 1988, replacing the earlier name Belize International Airport.
It is a single-runway airport, with one asphalt strip of 9,900 feet, set on low flat ground only 16 feet above sea level. That low position is why both the airport and Belize City are at risk of serious flooding, a fact that matters in the months of the Atlantic hurricane season. The airport handled 1,229,000 passengers in 2024, which gives you a sense of a place that is busy without being huge.
From the terminal to Belize City
Downtown Belize City is 10 miles from the airport, and the drive is about 30 minutes. A paved access road, completed in mid-2020, links the passenger terminal to the George Price Highway, crossing the Belize River. Roadwork and dredging are currently underway on that access road, which means slower traffic and uneven stretches of surface as you leave.
Taxis wait outside both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and they operate daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The airport itself keeps the same daily hours, and services outside them are available on request. For anything about a specific flight, the airport call center answers at +(501) 225-2045 and the email address is [email protected].
Onward by air to the cayes and towns
Because Tropic Air and Maya Island Air use the airport as a hub, you can often stay at the same airfield and board a small domestic flight rather than leave for the city. Both are in Terminal 1, the one shared with Copa and Sun Country, a short move from the Terminal 2 where American passengers arrive.
If your first night is in Belize City itself, keep one thing in mind from the State Department: it says the south side of the city has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime. Your arrival day is likelier to be spent heading straight for your lodging, whether that is a caye, a lodge in the Cayo District or a town on the coast.
What do you need for entry?
U.S. citizens need a U.S. passport valid for the length of their stay, and tourists staying less than 30 days do not need a visa. That is the heart of it, and it is a short list compared with many destinations, with no special immunizations required for visitors.
Three more points complete the picture. Every traveler must show proof of an onward or return ticket when entering Belize. You must also have sufficient funds to cover your entire stay, and non-resident arrivals must present at least US$60.00 per day for the duration of the trip. Immigration Officers also expect you to satisfy them of a specific address or hotel reservation, so have the name of your first lodging ready.
The customs form
You complete a Customs Declaration Form on arrival. One form may be filled out for family members traveling together when the children are under 18, while passengers over 18 need to complete their own. Anyone traveling as a couple of adults, or with a teenager, therefore fills in more than one.
Items that attract tax or duty may be paid for in cash, by VISA or MASTER card, or with certified cheques. It is a small detail, but it means you are not stuck at the counter looking for an ATM.
If you arrive by land instead
Not everyone comes by air. Travelers entering Belize by land pay different fees depending on whether the stay is less than or more than 24 hours. This does not apply to a Miami flight, but it is the rule to know if a later leg of your trip takes you across a border.
Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.
If you drive to Miami and leave a car at the Belize airport side of a trip, parking at Philip S. W. Goldson costs US$2.00 per day, and overnight parking is US$9.00. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so a trip in those months sits inside it, and the low ground of the airport and Belize City is the reason the season is worth a thought when you plan.
