Somewhere between the Carolina pines and the first glimpse of green water, the question arrives: how do you actually get from Charlotte to Belize? The airlines that serve Belize City publish their gateways, and the names on that list tell you where to aim. Everyone lands at the same airport on the edge of Belize City, and the entry rules are short.

Which airlines fly from Charlotte to Belize?
The airlines that fly to Belize City name Miami, Atlanta and Houston as their U.S. departure points, and those are the cities to build a trip from Charlotte around. American Airlines serves Belize from Miami, Delta from Atlanta and Southwest from Houston, all year round. The airport’s route listings do not name Charlotte itself as a departure city, so the sensible way to plan is to start from the gateway cities that are named.
United and Westjet also check in passengers at the Belize City airport. For the other carriers, the airport lists specific cities and seasons, and those are laid out in the table.
| Airline | Flies from | Season |
|---|---|---|
| American Airlines | Miami | Year-round |
| Delta Airlines | Atlanta | Year-round |
| Southwest Airlines | Houston | Year-round |
| Copa Airlines | Panama | Year-round |
| Alaska Air | Seattle | November through April |
| Air Canada | Toronto | December through April |
| Sun Country Airlines | Minneapolis | December through April |
The year-round gateways: Miami, Atlanta and Houston
Three U.S. cities keep a link to Belize through every month of the year. Miami, on American Airlines, is the Florida option. Atlanta, on Delta, is the Southern hub that many travelers in the Carolinas already know well. Houston, on Southwest, completes the trio.
Because these routes run all year, they suit a trip planned around school breaks, a long weekend on a caye or a rainforest week in the Cayo District, with no need to match a seasonal window. Pick the gateway whose airline you already use, then work out your own first leg from Charlotte to that city.
The seasonal routes: Seattle, Toronto and Minneapolis
A second group of airlines flies to Belize only in the cooler months. Alaska Air links Seattle to Belize from November through April. Sun Country Airlines flies from Minneapolis and Air Canada from Toronto, both from December through April.
These matter mostly if your plans take you through those cities, or if you are traveling in winter and want more choices on the departures board. They are not the gateways a Charlotte traveler would head for first, but they show how the Belize schedule swells when the northern winter sets in.
Copa through Panama, and flights inside Belize
Copa Airlines flies from Panama to Belize year-round, which opens a Central American routing for travelers who combine Belize with another country. Once you are in Belize, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air run domestic flights from the same airport, and Transportes Aereos Guatemaltecos (TAG) also checks in there.
That domestic network is useful if your destination is a caye or a town rather than Belize City itself. The airport is a hub for both Tropic Air and Maya Island Air, so the transfer from an international arrival to a local flight happens on the same airport grounds.
Where do you land?
You land at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, in Ladyville, on the coast just outside Belize City. It is the country’s international airport, and it serves the largest city in Belize, on the eastern edge of Central America. The runway is a single asphalt strip, long enough for the international jets, and the setting is low and flat beside the water.
The airport sits about thirty minutes by car from the center of Belize City, roughly ten miles away. In mid-2020 a new paved access road was completed from the George Price Highway, running across the Belize River directly to the passenger terminal. Roadwork and dredging are currently underway on the airport access road, so expect slower traffic and uneven stretches of pavement on the way in and out.
Terminals 1 and 2
Check-in counters for every airline are in Terminals 1 and 2. The carriers are split between them, so it helps to know which side of the building your airline uses.
| Terminal | Airlines |
|---|---|
| Terminal 1 | COPA, Sun Country, Transportes Aereos Guatemaltecos (TAG), Maya Island Air, Tropic Air |
| Terminal 2 | Air Canada, Alaska Air, American, Delta, Southwest, United, Westjet |
A traveler who flies American, Delta or Southwest is therefore a Terminal 2 passenger, while the small domestic carriers that fly to the cayes and towns operate from Terminal 1.
Hours, taxis and the ride into town
The airport keeps daytime hours, and taxis wait outside both terminals on the same schedule. Services beyond normal hours are available upon request.
| Service | Open |
|---|---|
| Airport | Daily, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. |
| Taxis outside Terminals 1 and 2 | Daily, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. |
The airport call center can be reached at +(501) 225-2045, and the contact email is [email protected]. A map of the airlines that fly to Belize is on the airport’s website, where a larger version opens with a click.
A low-lying coast
The airport stands only a few feet above sea level, which puts both it and Belize City at risk of serious flooding. That is a geographic fact worth understanding when you pick your dates, because the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
Outside those months the coast is out of the official season. Inside them, a tropical system can reshape travel plans along the whole coast, and your airline is the place to look for changes.
What do you need for entry?
U.S. citizens need a U.S. passport valid for the length of their stay, and nothing more in the way of a visa for a short visit. Tourists staying fewer than thirty days do not need a Belizean visa. Belize does not require special immunizations for visitors.
The rest of the checklist concerns proof that you will leave and that you can pay your way. All travelers must show an onward or return ticket when entering Belize, and they must have sufficient funds to cover the entire stay. At Goldson Airport, non-resident passengers must present at least US$60.00 per day for the duration of their stay.
At the immigration desk
Passengers arriving at the airport must also satisfy Immigration Officers of a specific address or hotel reservation. Have the name of your lodge, guesthouse or resort ready, whether it is a room on Ambergris Caye or a cabin near San Ignacio. The officer is looking for a place where you will be staying, so a name and a location are what the question calls for.
Your onward ticket and your passport are the other documents the officer will ask to see, and funds can be shown to the same officer. Keep all of these together in one place as you leave the aircraft.
The customs form
Arriving passengers also fill out a Customs Declaration Form. One form may be completed for family members traveling together where the children are under 18, while passengers over 18 complete their own.
Items that attract tax or duty may be paid for in cash, VISA and MASTER cards or certified cheques. A family traveling from Charlotte can therefore share a single form for the children and let each adult fill out a separate one.
If you cross by land
Travelers who enter Belize by land pay different fees depending on whether the stay is less than or more than 24 hours. The airport route does not involve that charge, which is a point in its favor if you are flying in from the Carolinas and want the shortest list of entry steps.
Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, because of crime, and says the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime.
Departure from Belize City carries two fees, shown in the table. Parking at the airport has its own daily rate, and TSA PreCheck is not available at Goldson Airport. Belize is a country of cayes, coast and rainforest, and a sensible habit anywhere in Belize City is to know where you are staying before you set out. The hurricane season adds one more reason to keep your plans flexible in the autumn.
| Fee | Amount | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger Service Fee | US$53.50 | Departing passengers |
| Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) Fee | US$20.00 | Departing passengers |
| Parking, per day | US$2.00 | Drivers leaving a car at the airport |
| Parking, overnight | US$9.00 | Drivers leaving a car overnight |
