On Paradise Island, the evening starts at Marina Village, where a Junkanoo Rush brings cowbells, whistles and feathered costumes to the waterfront. A few miles west, Cable Beach settles into a long stretch of sand, with resort lights coming on behind the palms and the casino floor beginning to hum. Both sit on the same sunny corner of the Bahamas, but one is built around a single giant resort island and the other around a string of beachfront hotels on New Providence, and the choice shapes the whole vacation.

Which is better, Paradise Island or Cable Beach?
Paradise Island suits travelers who want one big, self-contained resort world with water slides, aquariums and marine animals, while Cable Beach suits those who prefer a long beachfront strip with several resorts, a golf course, nightlife and a casino. Families chasing a water park tend to find what they want on both sides, since each has its own. Couples and adults-only seekers lean toward Cable Beach, where one resort is reserved for couples.

Beaches and the sea
Paradise Island’s signature stretch is Cabbage Beach, which runs east from Atlantis along the island’s north shore for about 1.3 miles. It is described as one of the more beautiful beaches around Nassau and Paradise Island, ideal for beach walking, swimming or sunbathing. Water-skiing, snorkeling and parasailing are on offer there too, so the sand has a busy, active feel rather than a hush.
You do not have to stay at a resort to reach it. A path running north from Casino Drive, along the east side of the RIU resort, gives public access. Atlantis has its own sands as well, where the waterpark is said to hold five miles of white beach, and guests there move between pool, slide and shore without leaving the property.
Cable Beach spreads over two and a half miles on the northern coast of New Providence, west of Nassau. The name goes back to an 1892 submarine telegraph cable that linked Jupiter, Florida to Goodman’s Bay, a bit of history that makes the beach feel like more than a row of hotel loungers. Five first-class or luxury resorts front this shoreline, so the sand is lined with umbrellas, towers and terraces rather than left open.
At Sandals Royal Bahamian, guests can take a short boat ride to the resort’s private island, Barefoot Cay, which has two beaches, a spa and a zen garden. That gives Cable Beach a second, quieter beach option that has nothing to do with the main strip, though it is for resort guests of that adults-only property.
For a beach to walk for a long stretch with room to spread out and water sports on hand, Cabbage Beach earns the edge, mainly because it is described as suited to walking, swimming and sunbathing alike. Cable Beach wins for the lined-up resort life: you step from a hotel onto the sand, then back to a restaurant or a pool in a few moments. Both sit on the north side of New Providence’s waters, so the sea can change with the weather, and you should judge it on the day.
Things to do
Paradise Island: Atlantis, Dolphin Cay and the evening scene
Paradise Island is best known for Atlantis, an ocean-themed casino resort spread over 154 acres, with a waterpark, a marine habitat and several hotel towers. The resort has pools, restaurants, a walk-in aquarium and casinos, and it officially opened as Atlantis in December 1998 with the construction of the Royal Towers.
Aquaventure is the water park, themed in a way you rarely see at local parks. Its main features are The Current, a lazy river that doubles as a raft ride, and the Mayan temple slide tower. Next to it, Dolphin Cay is a 14-acre marine habitat for manta rays, sea lions and rescued Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, described as one of the largest and most sophisticated marine habitats and dolphin rescue-rehabilitation facilities in the world.
In the evening, Marina Village hosts a Junkanoo Rush on Friday and Saturday nights, a small taste of the Bahamas’ great street parade. For a calmer outing, the Versailles Gardens and French Cloister make a stroll of about a quarter of an hour on foot from Atlantis, a green pause between pool days.
Cable Beach: Baha Mar, golf and the casino
Cable Beach is built around Baha Mar, a 1,000-acre resort complex that opened in April 2017 with three hotels: a Grand Hyatt, SLS Baha Mar and the Rosewood. It holds 2,200 rooms between them, and the grounds include a Tournament Players Club golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. The strip also has a golf course, nightlife and the largest casino in the Bahamas.
The Baha Bay water park sits on fifteen beachfront acres next to the resort, and Baha Mar guests enjoy unlimited access to it. That gives Cable Beach its own answer to Atlantis, with less of an aquarium focus and more of a beachfront resort rhythm.
Pompey Market is on Cable Beach too, a nod to local shopping that sets the strip apart from a pure hotel zone. Sandals Royal Bahamian adds an all-inclusive, adults-only option, with ten specialty restaurants and eight bars, three of them swim-up, and all food and drinks included without limit.
Weather and the best time to go
Paradise Island and Cable Beach share one climate, since both sit on New Providence beside Nassau, so no season favors one over the other. What changes is the time of year. Winter days are warm without being heavy, the kind of weather for walking a long beach, golfing or sitting at a poolside table at lunch. Summer is hotter and wetter, and the water parks make the most sense then.
| Nassau | Average high (°F) | Average low (°F) | Rain (inches) | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 79.4 | 65.1 | 2.6 | 4.3 |
| July | 90.8 | 76.4 | 5.77 | 12.4 |
In January, afternoons are warm enough for the beach, though evenings call for a light layer on a terrace. Rain comes only on a handful of days, so beach and golf plans mostly hold. It is a good month for the Cabbage Beach walk or a round on the Baha Mar course.
July is hot, with showers on many days, usually passing rather than all-day. Many people spend the middle of the day in the water parks and move to the sand late in the afternoon. The nights stay warm, which suits the outdoor Junkanoo Rush at Marina Village and a late dinner along the Cable Beach strip.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, so summer and early fall trips fall inside it. Whichever side you choose, a trip in those months deserves a flexible mindset, while the winter and early spring months sit outside the official season.
Getting there and getting around
Paradise Island is connected to New Providence by two bridges crossing Nassau Harbour. The first was built in 1966 by Resorts International, and the second came in the late 1990s. That link means the island is not cut off: crossing from Nassau is a matter of driving or riding over a bridge rather than boarding a boat.
The island once had its own airport, but it closed in 1999, and the airfield and runway have been replaced by an 18-hole golf course. So there is no landing on Paradise Island itself, and arrivals reach it overland from elsewhere on New Providence.
Cable Beach lies on the northern coast of New Providence, a few miles west of Nassau. Baha Mar is on Cable Beach in Nassau, on the island of New Providence, so a stay there places you on the same island as Paradise Island, just on the other side of town.
Once you are there, the two places feel very different on foot. Around Atlantis, Marina Village and the Versailles Gardens are within a stroll of the resort, and the path to Cabbage Beach runs north from Casino Drive. On Cable Beach, the beachfront runs along two and a half miles, and the resorts, the golf course and Pompey Market all share that same coastal corner.
Because both sit on New Providence, combining them is a matter of crossing the island rather than flying anywhere. That is the main reason many travelers think of them as two flavors of the same trip, not two separate destinations.
Who should choose which
Choose Paradise Island if the resort itself is the destination. Atlantis puts a waterpark, a walk-in aquarium, casinos and a large marine habitat in one place, and Cabbage Beach adds a long walkable shore with water sports.
It fits families who want slides and animals close together, and travelers who like an evening at Marina Village with a Junkanoo Rush. The Bridge Suite, in the span between the Royal Towers, shows how far the high end of the island reaches.
Choose Cable Beach if you want a beachfront strip with several resorts to pick from. Golfers get the Jack Nicklaus course, couples get the adults-only all-inclusive Sandals Royal Bahamian, and anyone who likes a casino and nightlife has them close by. Baha Bay gives families a water park, and Pompey Market adds a bit of local color to a stay otherwise made of resorts.
Combining them is natural, since both belong to New Providence. A stay on one side can include an evening or a day on the other: a Junkanoo Rush at Marina Village after a Cable Beach day, or a stroll on Cabbage Beach before heading back west to the golf course and the casino.
Good to know before you go
The U.S. State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise increased caution”, and says most crime occurs in Nassau on New Providence and in Freeport on Grand Bahama.
Both places belong to New Providence, where most of the country’s crime is concentrated, so the usual habits of a city stay apply when you leave the resort grounds. The Bahamian dollar is the local currency. The hurricane season runs through the end of November, which matters if you travel in the fall.
