Portland to Anchorage: Airlines, Ted Stevens Airport and ID for the Flight

Somewhere over the Gulf of Alaska, the flight attendant starts clearing cups, and the window fills with peaks that the Portland rain never prepared you for. The question that sends so many Oregonians north is simple: how do you get from Portland to Anchorage? You fly, and there is a nonstop route from Portland, with Alaska Airlines holding a hub at each end.

Which airlines fly from Portland to Anchorage?

Alaska Airlines is the carrier most travelers think of first, and for good reason: Portland and Anchorage are both among its hubs, so the airline is at home on either end of this route. Portland is also on the list of cities with nonstop service into Anchorage in summer, alongside Seattle/Tacoma, San Francisco, Denver, Chicago O’Hare and a long roster of others.

The airline itself has a long Alaska history. It began as McGee Airways, whose first service ran between Anchorage and Bristol Bay, and in the 1940s its headquarters sat in Anchorage. Today it is headquartered in SeaTac, Washington, near Seattle, and focuses on linking West Coast cities with Alaska and Hawaii.

Why Alaska Airlines fits this trip

Alaska Airlines belongs to Oneworld, the third-largest airline alliance in the world, and its frequent-flyer program is called Atmos Rewards. If you already collect miles with Alaska or a Oneworld partner, a Portland to Anchorage ticket is a natural place to use them or add to them.

Its main hub is Seattle–Tacoma, which matters if your plans include a connection. Seattle/Tacoma is also one of the cities with nonstop flights into Anchorage, so a routing through that airport is one more way to reach the same arrivals hall.

Other airlines in Anchorage

Anchorage’s South Terminal, the domestic one, handles Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Sun Country Airlines and United Airlines, plus departures for Condor and Discover Airlines. That gives you a sense of how many carriers connect the city to the rest of the country, even if your own ticket from Portland is a single flight.

The volume is considerable: more than 240 flights arrive daily at the Anchorage airport. Many of them bring travelers who are about to board a train, a motorcoach or a small plane, which gives the terminal a restless, trip-starting feel.

Where do you land?

You land at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, at 5000 W. International Airport Rd., about 5 miles southwest of downtown Anchorage. It is a city airport in the real sense, close enough to the center that the first hour of the trip is not a long haul to your bed.

Which terminal for a Portland flight

The airport has two terminals. The South Terminal, with 24 gates, is the domestic one, and it serves Alaska Airlines, so a flight from Portland on that carrier belongs there. The North Terminal, with 8 gates, is the international one, used for Condor arrivals, international seasonal charters and military flights.

Seen from the air on approach, the airport tells you something about Alaska. Next to it sits Lake Hood Seaplane Base, the busiest seaplane base in the world, so floatplanes come and go beside the runways. The airport also acts as a hub for cargo carriers, including FedEx Express, Atlas Air, Polar Air Cargo and UPS Airlines, and FedEx is its largest cargo facility.

From the airport to downtown

The People Mover bus, Route 40, serves both the North and South terminals and runs to the downtown Transit Center. It comes every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes in the evenings and on weekends, so the wait is longer if you land late or on a Saturday.

Downtown is also where the Alaska Railroad Depot stands, at 411 West 1st Ave, with a phone line at +1 907 265-2494. Travelers who are connecting from the plane to a rail journey will find that the depot and the bus’s downtown stop sit in the same part of the city.

What the first evening looks like

The best time to visit Anchorage runs from May to early September. In summer the city gets up to 19½ hours of sunlight, with the sun setting just before midnight, so an evening arrival from Portland still leaves light for a stroll after you drop your bags.

Summer highs average around 68°F, with lows near 55°F, which means a light layer is enough for the walk from the bus stop to dinner. Most people plan at least three days in Anchorage during their Alaska travels, and the free Official Anchorage Visitor Guide, with its business directory for the city and Southcentral Alaska, helps fill them.

What do you need for the trip?

For a domestic flight from Portland to Anchorage, you need valid photo identification, and since REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, that means a REAL ID compliant license or another accepted document such as a passport. Both cities are in the United States, so this is the same check you would face flying to Chicago.

Identification at the checkpoint

Adults 18 and older must show valid ID at the checkpoint. A driver’s license or ID with a star (or flag), or one that says Enhanced, signals REAL ID readiness. A passport may be used instead of a REAL ID license to board domestic flights, so travelers whose license lacks the star can still fly.

A temporary driver’s license is not an acceptable form of ID. TSA currently accepts an expired ID up to two years after its expiration date, though the list of acceptable IDs is subject to change without notice. Minor variations in name suffixes on your boarding pass and ID are accepted, and the suffix is not required on the pass.

If your ID does not qualify

Travelers without an acceptable form of ID can go through the TSA ConfirmID program for a $45 fee. If your identity cannot be verified, you will not be allowed into the screening checkpoint, so it is worth looking at your wallet well before the drive to the airport.

Children under 18 do not need to show identification when traveling within the United States. Unaccompanied minors who are eligible for TSA PreCheck must show an acceptable ID to get expedited screening.

What to plan once you arrive

A flight from Portland is usually the start of a bigger itinerary. Many Alaska vacation deals and tours bundle motorcoach and train excursions with overnight stays and activities, and visitors can book an Alaska Railroad trip, take a flightseeing tour or a day cruise, or stay in a remote Alaska lodge.

If you like to prepare in advance, the Anchorage e-newsletter sends trip inspiration, travel deals and planning tools. It is a quiet way to build the list of what you will do after landing.

Good to know before you go

Pack for a summer that is mild by day and cool at night, and expect long evenings that make it easy to stay out after dinner. The season that suits Anchorage best runs from May to early September, so a trip outside those months will feel different, with shorter days. The one fee on this route that depends on you is the ID one, and it is easy to avoid by carrying a REAL ID or a passport.
