Negril sits on the last point of the island, so its day-trip map is lopsided: every worthwhile target lies east, and the roads that carry you there are two lanes wide the whole way. Mileage misleads here. A stretch of coast road with a market town on it can eat a morning, while a cold river forty minutes inland can be done before lunch.
Each trip says what it gives, how it is best reached (booked excursion, a licensed driver hired for the day, or your own rental car), and who should leave it alone. The outings that do not repay the road from this end of Jamaica are named at the bottom.

How day trips from Negril work: the two roads east and what they cost in hours
Two roads leave town. The A2 runs east through Little London to Savanna-la-Mar, the parish capital, where the main street is also the market and where a slow truck sets everyone’s pace. That is the way to Roaring River, to Black River and to the whole south coast. The other road bends north-east along the shore through Lucea to Montego Bay, the same asphalt described in the airport run, prettier and slower whenever cruise traffic is in the bay.
Three modes, three different days. Booked excursions collect passengers along Seven Mile Beach and the West End early, run to a fixed script and put nobody behind a wheel. A rental car pays for itself on the inland runs, where excursions do not go and where stopping for a jerk pan is half the point. Read the driving briefing first, since the interior lanes are narrow, unlit and shared with goats. Surface conditions still vary parish by parish after the storm, so check the recovery tracker the week you travel, and treat any drive time here as an estimate on a good morning.
1 · Mayfield Falls: the river climb about 1h15 inland (est.)
Not a waterfall you look at, a river you walk up. Mayfield Falls, in the hills above Flower Hill in Westmoreland, is a chain of shallow limestone pools and small cascades under bamboo, cold enough to make the sea feel like bathwater. Guides walk with you, water shoes are rented at the gate, and the whole climb is done at chest depth or less, which makes it workable for children who can hold a hand.
The road is the trip. The last stretch off the main route is single-track, potholed and blind at the bends, and it takes longer than the map suggests. Excursion vans and hired drivers handle it every day. A small rental car after heavy rain is a different proposition. Two rival operations sit on opposite banks of the same river with confusingly similar names, so state which entrance you mean when you book, and confirm it again with the driver.
Not for: anyone unsteady on slick rock, and anyone travelling on a day when it has rained hard upstream, since the river runs brown and the guides shorten the route. Pair it with a stop in Savanna-la-Mar on the way back rather than a second attraction.
2 · Blue Hole Mineral Spring and Roaring River: the half-day inland from Sheffield
The Blue Hole Mineral Spring at Brighton, inland behind Negril and not to be confused with the Ocho Rios one, is a limestone sinkhole of very cold, very blue water with a jumping platform above it, a ladder for the exit and a pool and bar at ground level. Twenty minutes (est.) from town by route taxi or hired driver, no van needed, no full day committed. It fits an overcast morning with a beach afternoon behind it.
Roaring River, at Petersfield past Savanna-la-Mar, is the other short inland run: a cave with a spring-fed pool inside, reached with a village guide whose fee is agreed at the gate rather than printed anywhere. Both trips reward travellers who like arranging their own day, and both frustrate anyone who wants a wristband and a fixed price. 3 · YS Falls and the Black River safari: the south-coast day, about 2h each way (est.)
YS Falls, on a working estate in St Elizabeth, is the tidy counterweight to Mayfield: terraced cascades into swimming pools, a tractor-pulled jitney from the car park to the water, lifeguards, a rope swing and lawns with picnic tables. It is organised in a way the interior falls are not, which is exactly why families book it and why solitude seekers grumble about it.
Most operators pair it with a boat safari on the Black River, a mangrove run where American crocodiles sun themselves on the banks and the guide names the birds. Morning boats are calmer and better lit. The pairing is the standard full-day excursion sold along Seven Mile Beach, and it is the best single introduction to the region covered in the south coast guide.
Not for: anyone who resents four hours (est.) of round-trip road for one swim, or anyone attempting it in a rental car on their first day of Jamaican driving. Check current access and river conditions in the recovery tracker before you pay a deposit.
4 · Floyd’s Pelican Bar: the boat from Parottee, and the days it does not sail
Floyd’s Pelican Bar stands on a sandbar out in the sea off Parottee Point, built of driftwood and mangrove poles, reachable only by boat. The water around it is waist-deep and warm, the fish is ordered on arrival and eaten a long while later, and the whole appeal is standing in the Caribbean a mile from shore with a cold bottle. It photographs well and it is better in person.
Getting there means driving to Parottee, roughly two hours (est.) east via Savanna-la-Mar and Black River, then negotiating with the boatmen at the shore for the crossing and the wait. Several south-coast tours from Negril bundle it with YS Falls, which spares the haggling and costs the leisure. Travellers who sleep a night at Treasure Beach reach it in twenty minutes instead.
Not for: rough-sea days, when the boats stay in and the trip evaporates, and not for anyone uneasy in a small open craft on open water. There is no shade to speak of on the sandbar, so the hat and the reef-safe sunscreen from the packing list matter more here than on the beach.
Montego Bay and the Luminous Lagoon at Falmouth: the evening trip from Negril
Montego Bay is roughly an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half up the coast (est.), which makes it Negril’s errand town as much as an outing: Doctor’s Cave Beach, the Hip Strip, the craft market, a pharmacy that stocks what the beach shop does not. Further east at Falmouth, the Luminous Lagoon glows when you disturb the water, and it only performs after dark. From Negril that means a long return on an unlit two-lane road at the end of the night, with a hired driver rather than your own car. The lagoon guide makes the case for catching it on a transfer day instead, on the way in or out.
Not for: anyone who wants to be on the cliffs for sunset, since the timings collide. Combining MoBay shopping with the lagoon in one outing works only if someone else is driving and dinner is already written off.

Ocho Rios, Kingston and Port Antonio: the trips that do not pay from Negril
Dunn’s River Falls sits about three hours east (est.), which buys six hours of van for forty minutes of climbing, so save it for an Ocho Rios base as the falls guide and the head-to-head both set out. Kingston and the Blue Mountains are a relocation, not an outing, and Port Antonio is further still. Moving bases mid-trip solves all three, which is what the 7-day route does.
The last word
Leave before the Savanna-la-Mar market fills the road, carry small notes for gate fees and guides who work for tips, and tell your driver the hour you want to be back rather than the hour you want to leave. One big trip per stay is the right dose from this corner of the island, and the interior rivers reward it more than any second beach would.
Slot that one day into the three-day plan and let the rest of the week stay horizontal. The drive home has its own payment attached: the road runs west for the last hour, the light comes straight at the windshield through the cane, and you arrive with sand still in the car and time to get wet again before the sun drops off the cliffs.
