Big Cypress National Preserve in December: Weather, Daylight, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

Big Cypress National Preserve in December sits on the dry side of Florida’s calendar. The NOAA normals we use put the average afternoon at 78.2°F, the average dawn at 64.3°F, and measurable rain on 3.7 days of the month. For a swamp you visit from the Tamiami Trail, that means a fleece for the first boardwalk of the morning and a sun hat by lunch.

Every figure here comes from a coastal Miami station, and the preserve sits inland, where winter nights run colder than the city’s. December also brings short days: about 10 hours 35 minutes of light on the 15th, with sunset at 5:33 p.m. Eastern. Time the drive so you reach the preserve early and leave the gravel roads before dark.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information publish the 1991-2020 normals we use, from station USW00012839 in Miami: an average December high of 78.2°F, an average low of 64.3°F and 2.44 inches of precipitation. These are readings from a real thermometer, not a gridded reanalysis. That thermometer stands on the coast, and the preserve sits inland on the Tamiami Trail, where winter nights run colder than the city’s. Expect dawn in the swamp to feel cooler than the Miami low suggests.

Measurable rain, at least 0.10 inch, falls on 3.7 days of an average December, about one day in eight. A soaking day of an inch or more comes 0.5 times a month on average, so roughly every other December has one. For a two-day trip the odds favor dry weather on both days. Keep a light rain shell in the car and move the long walk to whichever morning the forecast leaves clear.

Between the 64.3°F average dawn and the 78.2°F average afternoon sits a swing of 13.9°F at the Miami station, and likely more inland, where nights run colder. Pack layers you can peel off at the car: a fleece or light jacket for the first hour, a long-sleeved sun shirt for midday, and closed shoes for damp boardwalk planks. Sunscreen and a hat stay in the bag all day.

On December 15 the sun rises at 6:58 a.m. and sets at 5:33 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, for about 10 hours 35 minutes of daylight. Usable light for a swamp walk fades soon after sunset, so a boardwalk started at 4 p.m. leaves little margin. Aim to arrive within two hours of sunrise, when the air is still near the cool end of the range.

How warm is Big Cypress National Preserve in December?

An average December afternoon peaks at 78.2°F and an average night bottoms out at 64.3°F at the Miami station, 13.9°F apart. January widens that gap to 15.2°F and November narrows it to 13.0°F. We could not read a sea-temperature series for the Gulf water nearest the preserve, so we give no water figure. If you meet one elsewhere, check whether it is a mean of daily maxima: those run a little warmer than a 24-hour average.

Dress for two temperatures. At 7 a.m. expect conditions near or below the 64.3°F Miami low, so long pants and a light jacket make sense. By early afternoon the average climbs toward 78.2°F, warm enough for short sleeves in the sun, and the jacket goes back in the car. Pack insect repellent too, since we could not verify December mosquito conditions for the preserve.

Our sources carry no count of freezing nights, for Miami or for the preserve, so we cannot say how often December brings frost to the swamp. The Miami average low is 64.3°F, and the preserve’s inland nights run colder. If you camp, check the forecast low for Ochopee or Everglades City the day before, and bring a sleeping bag rated well below the Miami figure.

How busy is Big Cypress National Preserve in December? Crowds and prices

December falls inside Florida’s dry season, November through April, the stretch our Florida calendar treats as the state’s high season for outdoor trips. The holiday weeks at the end of the month are one of Florida’s two annual price peaks, alongside spring break, and early December counts among its quiet bargains, according to our Florida trip-cost guide. We found no occupancy series for the preserve or its gateway towns, so we rank no week as its cheapest.

Christmas splits the month. A trip in the first half of December lands in the quieter stretch, while the days around Christmas and New Year compete with holiday traffic for rooms in Naples, Everglades City and Miami. We could not verify typical booking lead times, so we give no number of weeks. For the holiday weeks, a refundable rate lets you move if the forecast turns.

We could not verify the lodging-tax rate in the counties around the preserve, so we give no percentage. Ask the property for the total with taxes and any resort fee before you commit.

Spend the extra on a room close to the preserve, in Everglades City or on the Naples side. With sunrise at 6:58 a.m. and sunset at 5:33 p.m., a nearby bed puts the dawn boardwalk in reach without a pre-dawn drive from Miami. Our Florida where-to-stay guide covers the bases on both coasts.

December pairs dry-season conditions with comfortable afternoons. With 2.44 inches of rain against November’s 3.53, and an average high of 78.2°F against 81.3°F, midday walking gets easier than in the 90-degree wet months. The dry season is also when wildlife gathers around the remaining water in the Everglades next door, as our Everglades guide explains, so scan the canals beside US 41 as you drive.

Start at the Oasis Visitor Center on the Tamiami Trail, where a boardwalk overlooks a canal, and stop at the Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center near Ochopee for maps and ranger advice. Kirby Storter Roadside Park has a boardwalk into the cypress swamp, the Loop Road Scenic Drive makes a partly unpaved loop south of US 41, and Turner River Road runs north as a gravel drive past canals. Check the National Park Service page for the preserve before you go for current hours, fees, and boardwalk lengths.

A 7 a.m. walk at Kirby Storter starts near the 64.3°F Miami low or below it, while the same boardwalk at 2 p.m. sits close to the 78.2°F afternoon average. The scenery barely shifts from week to week, but the air does. In November the afternoon average is 81.3°F, and in January it drops to 76.2°F, putting December between a warm month and a cool one.

We could not verify current entrance, camping or permit fees, so we name nothing as free. The roadside boardwalks and scenic drives are reached from public highways, and the National Park Service lists charges and permit rules on the preserve’s official site. We found no dated December event for the preserve, so we list none.

Big Cypress National Preserve in December: a two-day itinerary

On day one, reach the Oasis Visitor Center soon after the 6:58 a.m. sunrise, jacket on, and scan the canal while the air is near the cool end of the day. Mid-morning, walk the Kirby Storter boardwalk, then continue west to the welcome center near Ochopee for a ranger’s word on road conditions. Take a long, shaded break around midday as the air nears 78.2°F. Finish on Turner River Road in the late afternoon, back on pavement before the 5:33 p.m. sunset.

On day two, give the morning to the Loop Road Scenic Drive, taken slowly, with stops at pullouts where the water is still. If one of December’s 3.7 rain days lands on you, swap the drive for longer visitor-center stops and move the gravel roads to the next dry morning, since unpaved surfaces are the ones to avoid in a downpour. Head for your next stop, Naples or the Everglades, by mid-afternoon so the drive ends in daylight. Our Florida road-trip guide strings the Tamiami Trail into a longer route.

Big Cypress National Preserve in December vs November and January

Average low 68.3°F 64.3°F 61.0°F
Precipitation 3.53 in 2.44 in 1.83 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 4.7 3.7 3.8
Day-night swing 13.0°F 13.9°F 15.2°F

At the Miami station, the average high slides from 81.3°F in November to 78.2°F in December and 76.2°F in January, and the average low from 68.3°F to 64.3°F to 61.0°F. Rain drops from 3.53 inches to 2.44 and then 1.83, while rain days go from 4.7 to 3.7 and tick up to 3.8 in January.

Moving four weeks earlier, into November, buys afternoons 3.1°F warmer and nights 4.0°F milder, at the cost of 1.09 more inches of rain and one more wet day. Moving four weeks later, into January, trims another 2.0°F from the high and 3.3°F from the low, and removes 0.61 inch of rain, while wet days barely change. January also falls after the holiday weeks, with spring break, the state’s other price peak, still weeks away.

Is December a good time to visit Big Cypress National Preserve?

Yes, for most visitors. December suits Tamiami Trail drivers, boardwalk walkers and photographers who want a dry month with 78.2°F afternoons. It suits less well anyone planning long evenings outdoors or tent nights with thin gear, given 10 hours 35 minutes of daylight and inland nights colder than Miami’s 64.3°F average low. Holiday-week travelers should add room prices to the decision.

If December misses, look at January. It is drier, with 1.83 inches of rain against 2.44, and it clears the holiday weeks, though nights average 61.0°F at the Miami station. November fits travelers who put warmth ahead of dryness: 81.3°F afternoons and 68.3°F nights, with 3.53 inches of rain.

December sets a 78.2°F afternoon beside dry-season rain totals of 2.44 inches, one step before January’s cooler 61.0°F nights.

The last word

Choose your half of December first: the early weeks sit clear of Florida’s holiday peak, the last week sits inside it. Then build each day backward from a 5:33 p.m. sunset, with the dawn boardwalk at Oasis or Kirby Storter as the fixed point and a fleece in the trunk for it. An average December at the Miami station leaves about 27 days without measurable rain, so the odds favor a dry drive down the Tamiami Trail.
