FLORIDA · BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARK · OCTOBER
Biscayne National Park in October is a warm-water trip at the tail end of the wet season. The sea surface off the park averages 84.5°F, afternoons at the Miami station average 85.9°F, and the sun sets at 6:54 p.m. local time on October 15. On the Florida calendar in our best-time guide, October is the last wet month before the dry stretch that runs from November to April.
You have already picked the park, so the useful question is the date. October keeps most of September’s warm water and loses a good share of its rain: 7.65 inches against 10.22, and 9.0 rain days against 13.1. Atlantic hurricane season still runs to November 30 under NOAA’s dates, set out in our Florida overview. Book rooms and flights you can cancel.

The air normals below come from NOAA NCEI’s official 1991-2020 normals for the Miami station (GHCN USW00012839), a real thermometer on land immediately north of the park. The park itself is almost all water, and open water swings less than a city does in either direction, so offshore highs run a little milder and nights a little warmer than every figure here suggests. The sea temperature comes from a separate source, the Open-Meteo Marine API, averaged over 2015-2024.

NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals give the Miami station an October average high of 85.9°F and an average low of 74.2°F, with 7.65 inches of precipitation over the month. These are station normals from an official instrument, and a grid-cell reanalysis such as ERA5 can land a few degrees away on the same month. For a boat day, read them as warm and humid, with afternoons 3.1°F below September’s 89.0°F.
Measurable rain, 0.10 inch or more, falls on 9.0 days in an average October: roughly two days in every seven. On a four-day trip, expect one of them to get wet, possibly two. Spread over those nine days, the 7.65 inches average about 0.85 inch per rain day. Florida’s wet season tends to deliver its storms in the afternoon, as our best-time guide explains, so schedule crossings and snorkel stops for the morning.
Only 11.7°F separates the 74.2°F low from the 85.9°F high. Nothing in that range calls for a sweater. Pack for heat at both ends of the day: a light rain shell for storms, a long-sleeve sun layer and a hat for hours on an open boat, and reef-safe sunscreen. Our know-before-you-go guide covers the rest of a Florida bag.
October 15 brings about 11 hours 35 minutes of daylight. The sun rises at 7:18 a.m. and sets at 6:54 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (11:18 and 22:54 UTC). A boat leaving the dock at 8 a.m. has nearly 11 hours of light before sunset, and anyone paddling back in should aim to land before 6:30 p.m.
Can you swim in Biscayne National Park in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The Open-Meteo Marine API puts the sea surface off Biscayne National Park at 84.5°F in October, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average of the same water. Tables built on round-the-clock means will print a lower number, and both are accurate for what they measure.
Yes, you can swim. Water in the mid-80s needs no wetsuit for a snorkel, and most people get in without a gasp. Against an 85.9°F afternoon high, the sea sits just 1.4°F below the air, so climbing back onto a boat brings no chill either. A rash guard helps on a long snorkel for sun protection.
Our sources carry no wind or swell figures for October, so we give none. NOAA’s calendar does apply: hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10, per our Florida overview, and October falls inside it. Check the National Hurricane Center outlook the week you travel, and read our Florida safety guide for broader precautions.
How busy is Biscayne National Park in October? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series or monthly hotel rates for the Miami side of the park, so we rank no month cheap or expensive. The calendar gives one fixed point: Florida’s price peaks land on holiday weeks and spring break, as our Florida overview sets out, and October sits outside both. For daily budgets, our Florida trip-cost guide prices three tiers.
We have no booking-lead data, so we set no number of weeks ahead. In October the rule is flexibility: a room you can cancel and a flight you can change, since a tropical system can wipe out a planned boat day. Our Florida flights guide sorts the airports, and our where-to-stay guide covers bases.
We could not verify the lodging-tax rate for rooms near the park, so we give no percentage. Ask for the total price with taxes, resort fees and parking before you pay. Those last two add real money per night at beach properties, as our Florida overview warns.
The one line where paying more changes October is the refundable rate. A non-refundable room saves money only if the tropics stay quiet, and the Atlantic season stays open all month. The difference buys the right to slide the trip to November, when the Miami station drops to 4.7 rain days.
Things to do in Biscayne National Park in October

October lets you snorkel in 84.5°F water under afternoons that top out at 85.9°F, 3.1°F cooler than September’s. November brings drier skies, but the sea falls to 81.7°F. For a water park, that combination of warm sea and easing heat decides whether the month suits you.
The park’s mainland door is the Dante Fascell Visitor Center at Convoy Point. Offshore, Boca Chita Key with its lighthouse, Elliott Key and the stilt houses of Stiltsville are reached only by boat. We could not verify October fees, opening hours, tour schedules or dock space for any of them, so we list none. Check the National Park Service site for Biscayne before you book a crossing, and see our Florida national parks guide for how Biscayne fits with its neighbors.
Between September and November the sea off the park moves 6.1°F, from 87.8°F to 81.7°F. The afternoon air moves 7.7°F, from 89.0°F to 81.3°F. In October the water sits 1.4°F under the air high. By November it runs 0.4°F above it, and a swim after a boat ride no longer works as a cool-down.
Our sources carry no entrance fee and no free-admission date for Biscayne in October, so we name none. The Park Service publishes its fee-free days each year. Look them up before you fix dates, alongside the boat-tour operator’s own October timetable.
Biscayne National Park in October: a two-day itinerary
Sunrise on October 15 comes at 7:18 a.m., so on day one be at Convoy Point by 8 and on the water while the air is still well short of its 85.9°F high. Spend the morning on a boat trip or a paddle along the mangroves, if operators are running (we could not verify October schedules). Take the midday hours in shade or inside the visitor center, then return to the shoreline for late light ahead of the 6:54 p.m. sunset.
Day two is for an offshore key. Cross in the morning and plan to be back at the dock by early afternoon, before wet-season storms tend to build. If the forecast turns, swap the crossing into any clear morning and fill the stormy one with Miami, covered in our Miami guide, or drive to the Everglades, an hour west of the city. Our getting-around guide covers the car.

Rain falls from 10.22 inches in September to 7.65 in October and 3.53 in November. The Open-Meteo Marine API puts the sea at 87.8°F, 84.5°F and 81.7°F across the three months. Our September guide covers the month before.
Moving four weeks earlier gains 3.3°F of sea temperature and costs 4.1 extra rain days, right at the September 10 hurricane peak. Moving four weeks later cuts 4.3 rain days and 4.12 inches of rain, puts you outside hurricane season from December onward, and costs 2.8°F of water.
Is October a good time to visit Biscayne National Park?
Yes for swimmers and snorkelers who want water in the mid-80s and can book refundable. No for travelers who need dry skies to justify the flight, or who cannot shift dates if a storm forms: October still averages 9.0 rain days and sits inside hurricane season.
If the answer is no, pick November. Rain days fall to 4.7, the average high eases to 81.3°F, and the sea stays at 81.7°F, warm enough for most snorkelers. The season still runs to November 30, so keep the booking flexible for the first weeks.
October pairs an 84.5°F sea with 4.1 fewer rain days than September.
The last word
Book October refundable, put every boat hour before lunch, and let the water carry the trip. At the Miami station, two days in an average October bring an inch of rain or more, enough to cancel a crossing, so build one spare day into a four-day stay and give it to Boca Chita Key if the sky holds.
