BIG CYPRESS NATIONAL PRESERVE · JUNE · TAMIAMI TRAIL
Big Cypress National Preserve in June sits at the start of South Florida’s wet season, and the rain gauge shows the switch: an average June brings 10.51 inches at the NOAA station in Miami, against 6.32 inches in May. Afternoons average 89.3°F there and nights 76.3°F. On June 15 the sun is up from 6:27 am to 8:14 pm, and those long days let you walk early, retreat at midday and drive again in the evening.
The preserve fits a day on the Tamiami Trail between Miami and Naples, with a night at either end. Fly into MIA or FLL for the eastern end, or RSW for the western one (our Florida airport guide compares them). For the national park next door, start with our Everglades guide.

Every figure here comes from NOAA NCEI’s 1991–2020 monthly normals for station USW00012839 in Miami, a real thermometer on the coast rather than a model grid cell. June averages a high of 89.3°F, a low of 76.3°F and 10.51 inches of precipitation there. The preserve sits inland on the Tamiami Trail, where summer afternoons run hotter than the city’s, so expect the swamp at 3 pm to beat the coastal high.
In an average June, 12.6 days record at least 0.10 inch of rain at the Miami station, so measurable rain falls on about two days in five. Florida’s wet-season storms tend to build in the afternoon (our Florida calendar covers the pattern). Put the boardwalks and unpaved drives before lunch, and keep the afternoon for the car, the visitor center or a nap.
The gap between the average high and low is 13.0°F, narrow enough that a dawn start needs no warm layer. Pack for heat and wet together: a rain shell that folds small, quick-dry shirts with long sleeves against sun and mosquitoes, a spare pair of socks, and a dry bag for the phone. Shoes that can get soaked help at the soggy pullouts after a downpour.
On June 15 the sun rises at 6:27 am and sets at 8:14 pm Eastern Daylight Time, for 13 hours 47 minutes of daylight (sunrise-sunset.org, converted from UTC). The warm, low light on the sawgrass comes in the hour before 8:14 pm. Aim to be off Loop Road and Turner River Road by sunset.
How warm is Big Cypress National Preserve in June?
At the Miami station June runs from an average high of 89.3°F (31.8°C) to an average low of 76.3°F (24.6°C), a spread of 13.0°F. Inland on the preserve, NOAA’s coastal reading understates the afternoon: summer highs away from the city run hotter.
Mornings near 76°F and humid call for the same clothes as the afternoon: light long sleeves, a brimmed hat and insect repellent put on before you leave the car. By early afternoon heat becomes a safety question, so carry more water than a short boardwalk seems to need, and read our Florida safety guide on heat.
Our sources count no freezing nights for June, and with an average low of 76.3°F at the Miami station none should be expected. We also have no water-temperature reading for the swamp, so we give no swimming figure. For a warm-water swim in June, look at our manatee guide or Siesta Key Beach.
How busy is Big Cypress National Preserve in June? Crowds and prices
June falls inside Florida’s May to October wet season and outside the November to April dry season that sets the state’s peak, as our Florida calendar lays out. We found no occupancy series or monthly room rates for the Naples and Miami bases, so we crown no month cheapest.
Without occupancy data we give no booking lead time in weeks. The booking choice that shapes a June visit is the base: a Naples night puts you on the western end of the Trail at sunrise, a Miami night on the eastern end. Our Florida where-to-stay guide compares both.
We could not verify the lodging-tax rate at your base, so we give no percentage. Ask the hotel for the all-in nightly total, taxes and fees included, before you pay.
The spend that changes June most is the gap between a prepaid rate and a cancellable one. If a tropical storm shows up on the NOAA National Hurricane Center map the week before, a cancellable night lets you slide the preserve day by 24 hours or drop it. A prepaid night locks you in.
Things to do in Big Cypress National Preserve in June

Summer rain begins refilling the sloughs and cypress strands in June, and the preserve turns green and wet along the Tamiami Trail. The long evenings add a second window: with sunset at 8:14 pm on June 15, a drive after the heat of the day fits easily.
Start at the Oasis Visitor Center on the Tamiami Trail, then walk the Kirby Storter Roadside Park boardwalk into a cypress dome. Loop Road and Turner River Road are the two scenic drives off US 41, both largely unpaved. Check the NPS preserve site for current June hours, fees, and parking before you drive.
We have no water-depth or water-temperature reading, so the swamp itself gets no figure. The air shift is measured: highs rise from 86.7°F in May to 89.3°F in June at the Miami station, and rain days nearly double, from 6.9 to 12.6. After a wet week, ask at the visitor center whether the unpaved drives are passable.
We could not verify an entrance fee or any free-entry dates for June, so we name none. The roadside stops sit on a public highway, and the NPS preserve site lists the fees current for the month.
Big Cypress National Preserve in June: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Leave a Naples base before the 6:27 am sunrise and walk the Kirby Storter boardwalk in the first hour of light. Stop at the Oasis Visitor Center once it opens (confirm the hour on nps.gov), then drive Turner River Road before 11 am. Lunch indoors, and keep 1 to 4 pm for air conditioning. From about 6 pm, as the heat eases, head back out for the light on the sawgrass before the 8:14 pm sunset.
Day two. Drive Loop Road in the early morning if the visitor center confirms it is passable. With measurable rain on about two June days in five, keep a fallback ready: if the morning opens wet, stick to the paved stops along US 41 and spend the afternoon in Everglades National Park or Miami. If a tropical system appears on the NHC map, drop the swamp day and move it.
Big Cypress National Preserve in June vs May and July
| NOAA normal · Miami station | May | June | July |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 86.7°F | 89.3°F | 90.6°F |
| Average low | 73.4°F | 76.3°F | 77.5°F |
| Precipitation | 6.32 in | 10.51 in | 7.36 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 6.9 | 12.6 | 11.1 |
| High-low spread | 13.3°F | 13.0°F | 13.1°F |
The average high climbs 2.6°F from May to June and another 1.3°F into July. Lows move in step, from 73.4°F to 76.3°F to 77.5°F. At the Miami station June is the wettest of the three: 10.51 inches against 6.32 in May and 7.36 in July, with 12.6 rain days against 6.9 and 11.1. We have no sea or swamp-water reading for any of the three months.
Moving four weeks earlier to May buys afternoons 2.6°F cooler and 5.7 fewer rain days, before hurricane season opens (our May page has the detail). Moving four weeks later to July adds 1.3°F to the high but sheds 3.15 inches of rain and 1.5 rain days. July also sits closer to the season’s September 10 peak, per the NOAA figures in our Florida overview.
Is June a good time to visit Big Cypress National Preserve?
Yes for travelers who start at dawn, want the preserve green and wet, and can move a day if a storm is forecast. No for anyone set on long midday walks, dry unpaved roads or one fixed date: 12.6 rain days and an 89.3°F average high at the coastal station, hotter inland, make the middle of the day hard going.
If the answer is no, pick May: highs of 86.7°F, 6.9 rain days and 6.32 inches, all before hurricane season opens on June 1. For the full dry-season case from November to April, see our Florida calendar.
In June, 13 hours 47 minutes of daylight bracket a swamp taking on 10.51 inches of rain, so both the dawn and the evening are open for the trails.
The last word
A June visit comes down to the start time. On 3.6 days of an average June the Miami gauge takes an inch or more, roughly one day in eight, and those mornings belong in a museum in Miami. On the other days, book the room you can cancel, set the alarm for a 6:27 am sunrise, and be on the Kirby Storter boardwalk while the air still sits near 76°F.
