SIESTA KEY BEACH · MAY · FLORIDA GULF COAST
May at Siesta Key runs 87.5°F by day and 68.2°F before dawn, with 2.58 inches of rain spread over fewer than four wet days. Offshore, the Gulf averages 82.9°F. Siesta Beach took Best Beach in the U.S. for 2026 from U.S. News & World Report, and May is the month its water stops being a compromise: April sits at 77.4°F, which is swimmable with a gasp, and June brings 7.05 inches of rain plus the opening of hurricane season on the first of the month.
So the date question has a short answer and a long one. The short one is below, in numbers. The long one involves a 976-space parking lot, two free trolleys that both stop running before lunch, and a 19-degree gap between the hottest hour and the coolest. For the choice of neighborhood and nights, our Siesta Key guide does that work.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SIESTA KEY BEACH · MAY
May gives you late-spring Gulf water near 83°F, under three inches of rain and daylight to 8:13 p.m., all of it before the June rain load and before hurricane season opens.
NOAA 1991-2020 NORMALS · SEA 82.9°F · OUTSIDE HURRICANE SEASON
Go for: warm water without June’s rain, long evenings on the sand until past eight, and a key that has come out of its named January to April parking crunch.
Think twice before: planning midday on open sand, with normal highs at 87.5°F and no shade written into a beach.

Every air figure here comes from a real thermometer, not a grid cell: the NOAA NCEI monthly normals for 1991-2020, station USW00012871 at Sarasota-Bradenton, the same station that serves the key and breathes the same air. It puts May at an average high of 87.5°F, an average low of 68.2°F and 2.58 inches of precipitation. A normal is a thirty-year average, so treat it as the shape of the month rather than a forecast for your week.
Those 2.58 inches arrive on 3.8 days that record at least a tenth of an inch, or roughly one day in eight, and on 0.7 day that records an inch or more. In plain terms, a typical May gives you a genuine soaking about two years in three, and otherwise light stuff that interrupts a beach afternoon rather than canceling it. June is the contrast: 7.05 inches across 9.0 wet days.
The day-to-night spread is 19.3°F, wider than most visitors pack for. A 68°F dawn on open sand with a sea breeze is not warm, and the same is true after sunset. One long-sleeve layer and something to sit on covers both ends of the day, while the middle wants a hat, water and a rented umbrella more than it wants a plan.
Light is the month’s quiet luxury. On May 15 the sun comes up at 6:40 a.m. and goes down at 8:13 p.m. local time, giving 13 hours 33 minutes of daylight, so the sand stays usable through dinner hour and you get a second swim after the parking lot has emptied.
Can you swim in Siesta Key Beach in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Yes, and without ceremony. The sea surface off Siesta Key averages 82.9°F in May, from the Open-Meteo Marine API across 2015-2024. One caveat matters: that number is the mean of daily maxima, so it reflects the warmest reading of each day and sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. Early morning water is a little cooler than 82.9°F, late afternoon a little warmer.
At that reading you walk in and keep walking. Body temperature is around 98°F, so the Gulf still registers as cool for the first few seconds, then stops registering at all, which is the difference between May and April’s 77.4°F. It also means long sessions: floating, snorkeling in the shallows or keeping small children in the water for an hour is comfortable rather than a negotiation. Our Florida-with-kids guide covers the rest of the logistics.
On wind and waves we have to leave a gap: our marine source gave sea surface temperature only, and we verified no wave-height or wind series for May off this stretch of coast, so we quote none. What we can date is the calendar risk. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 per NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, which puts all of May outside it.
How busy is Siesta Key Beach in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
Visit Sarasota County names the local peak season plainly: January to April. May falls just past its far edge, which is a calendar fact rather than a discount. We found no monthly occupancy or room-rate series for the key, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive here. What we can say is that the busiest four months on the county’s own reckoning are behind you.
We could not verify a booking lead time for Siesta Key lodging, so we give no number of weeks. The scarcity we did verify is asphalt. Siesta Key Public Beach and Pavilion has 976 spaces, and the county’s destination marketing organization warns that the lots fill up fast during peak times and peak season, with the advice to arrive as early as possible. Treat 9 a.m. as the honest cutoff on a clear Saturday. For where to sleep, see our Florida lodging guide.
On the tax line, straight cards: we could not verify Sarasota County’s tourist development tax rate, so no percentage appears here. Assume some form of lodging tax is added at checkout, as everywhere in Florida, and read your quote total rather than the nightly headline.
The one place where spending more genuinely changes May is walking distance. A bed on the key within reach of the Pavilion removes the 976-space lottery from every morning, and it lets you take the second swim after 7 p.m. when the day-trippers have driven back over the bridge. Everything else, from rental umbrellas to dinner, is the same trip at any budget.
Things to do in Siesta Key Beach in May

May’s permission slip is the water. At 82.9°F the Gulf supports the whole swimming-and-snorkeling program that April’s 77.4°F merely tolerates, and it does so before June’s 7.05 inches of rain and before June 1 puts hurricane season on the table. Add 13 hours 33 minutes of daylight and you get two usable beach shifts in one day, morning and evening, with the hot middle spent anywhere else.
Start with the main event: Siesta Key Public Beach and Pavilion, 976 parking spaces, the quartz-crystal sand and soft turquoise water the county puts on its own brochures, and the 2026 Best Beach in the U.S. title from U.S. News & World Report. Then know that Turtle Beach and Crescent Beach are separate beaches on the same key, not other names for Siesta Beach. North, Lido Key is reachable on the free BayRunner trolley, running daily every 20 to 30 minutes from 8 a.m. to noon.
What May changes at those addresses is the air more than the sand. The beach itself is the beach in any month, but the normal high climbs from April’s 82.5°F to 87.5°F, so shade and timing start to matter, and the January-to-April crunch the county flags for its lots has eased. We did not verify a parking charge at the Pavilion, so we quote no fee.
Free in May, as year-round: both island trolleys. The 77 Islander Siesta costs nothing and runs daily, roughly every 30 minutes from 8 to 10 a.m., and the BayRunner to Lido is free on the same daily basis until noon. Both are morning services, so a trolley plan is a plan that starts before nine and comes home on foot or by rideshare.
Siesta Key Beach in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Sunrise is at 6:40 a.m., so be walking the sand by seven while it belongs to shell hunters and joggers. Park before nine, or catch the free 77 Islander between 8 and 10. Swim from mid-morning while the water sits near 82.9°F, then clear out around noon: an 87.5°F normal high on open sand is not a place to eat lunch. Come back at five for the long tail of the afternoon, and stay through the 8:13 p.m. sunset.
Day two. Take the BayRunner to Lido Key on a morning run before noon, then swap the afternoon for Turtle Beach or Crescent Beach at the quieter ends of the key. If the day turns out to be one of May’s 3.8 wet ones, remember only 0.7 day in the month delivers an inch or more, so the usual move is to wait it out over a long lunch rather than to drive inland. For a rainy-week rethink, our Florida things-to-do guide has the indoor options.
Siesta Key Beach in May vs April and June
| Measure | April | May | June |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 82.5°F | 87.5°F | 90.0°F |
| Average low | 62.7°F | 68.2°F | 73.6°F |
| Precipitation | 2.46 in | 2.58 in | 7.05 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.0 | 3.8 | 9.0 |
| Sea surface | 77.4°F | 82.9°F | 86.3°F |
The three months rise in step on temperature and then split on rain. Air climbs 82.5°F to 87.5°F to 90.0°F, and water 77.4°F to 82.9°F to 86.3°F, all of it modest and gradual. Rain does something else entirely: 2.46 inches in April, 2.58 in May, then 7.05 inches in June, with wet days jumping from 3.8 to 9.0. Air normals are NOAA’s for 1991-2020, while all three sea figures come from the Open-Meteo Marine API for 2015-2024.
Shift four weeks earlier and you trade 5.5°F off the water, down to 77.4°F, for 5.0°F less daytime heat and the tail of the county’s named January-to-April peak. Our April page makes that case in full. Shift four weeks later and the water gains 3.4°F, while rain nearly triples and the hurricane season is open from June 1. May is the version of this beach with warm water and a dry-ish sky.
Is May a good time to visit Siesta Key Beach?
For swimmers, families and anyone whose trip is built around being in the Gulf rather than looking at it, yes without hedging: 82.9°F water, 2.58 inches of rain, sunset past eight. It is a weaker month for anyone who wants to spend long midday hours outdoors away from the water, since 87.5°F on unshaded sand sets its own schedule, and for anyone who needs the county’s quietest lots, since we have no occupancy data to promise an empty beach.
If the heat is the deciding factor, take April. The normal high is 82.5°F, rain is marginally lower at 2.46 inches over 3.0 wet days, and the midday hours stay usable. The price is the swim: 77.4°F is a different sea, and April still sits inside the January-to-April stretch the destination organization flags for full parking lots.
Of these three months, only May pairs sea surface near 83°F with under three inches of rain and daylight running to 8:13 p.m.
The last word
Book the mornings and the month takes care of itself: on the sand by seven, in the water by ten, off the beach at noon, back for the last two hours of a 13-hour-33-minute day. One practical detail worth carrying from Sarasota County’s own facility directory, since it decides where a car can go: several numbered beach accesses on the key have no parking whatsoever or a single accessible space, Accesses 2, 3, 10 and 13 among them. They are ways in on foot, so save them for the walk back from dinner and leave the 976-space lot for the 8 a.m. run.
