Siesta Key Beach in April: Weather, Sea Temperature and Beach Parking

April hands Siesta Key the combination most visitors are hoping for: afternoons averaging 82.5°F, a Gulf warm enough to stay in, and only three days in an average month that record a tenth of an inch of rain. The quartz-crystal sand Visit Sarasota County puts on its own front page is at its most usable here, and the beach carries a fresh line on its résumé: U.S. News & World Report named Siesta Beach the best beach in the United States for 2026.

What April takes away is the easy morning. The county lists January through April as its peak season and says plainly that the beach lots fill fast, so plan to arrive as early as possible. With 976 spaces behind the pavilion and a month of near-perfect weather pushing everyone toward the same sand, the alarm clock is the single tool that decides how your day goes.

April is the warm-water end of Siesta Key’s January-to-April peak season: 82.5°F afternoons, a 77.4°F Gulf, three rain days, and a 976-space lot that sets the day’s only real deadline.

Go for: swimmable water at 77.4°F, long light until 7:56 p.m., and a month that sits entirely outside the Atlantic hurricane season.

Think twice before: planning a ten o’clock arrival at the public lot in a month the county itself flags as peak.

The air numbers here come from NOAA’s 1991-2020 monthly normals at station USW00012871, the Sarasota-Bradenton thermometer that serves the key, not from a grid-cell reanalysis and not from a sensor planted in the dune line. On that record an average April day tops out at 82.5°F and bottoms out at 62.7°F, with 2.46 inches of rain across the whole month. It is a real instrument in the same air as the beach, though an afternoon on the sand with a Gulf breeze reads a touch cooler than the runway does.

Rain in April arrives as a handful of visits rather than a season. Three days in an average April record at least 0.10 inch, so measurable rain turns up roughly one day in ten. Spread 2.46 inches over those few days and you get the pattern the Gulf coast is known for: a dark quarter of an hour, a hard shower, chairs back out before the towels have finished dripping. Book a full week of beach days and the statistics say you lose part of one.

Almost 20 degrees separate the 82.5°F high from the 62.7°F low, and both ends land in your day. Sunrise walks and anything on a restaurant patio after dark want a sweatshirt; the stretch from eleven to four wants shade and a hat. Pack the layer even if the weather app only ever shows you the afternoon.

April 15 delivers 12 hours 52 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 7:03 a.m. and sunset at 7:56 p.m. local time. That late finish is what separates April from the winter half of the calendar on this same key: dinner can wait until after the sun drops, and the walk back along the water still has light in it. Families who want both a long swim and a sunset no longer have to pick one.

Can you swim in Siesta Key Beach in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The Gulf off Siesta Key averages 77.4°F in April in the Open-Meteo Marine record for 2015-2024, and the way that average is built matters. It is the mean of daily maximum readings, so it runs a shade warmer than a true 24-hour average. The water you walk into at half past seven in the morning sits a little under 77.4°F. The water at four in the afternoon is the number you were promised.

In practice, 77.4°F is the temperature at which most adults stop negotiating with themselves at the waterline and simply get in. Children treat it as a swimming pool and stay in until someone calls them out. An hour of floating or snorkeling is where the chill finally registers, so a rash guard or a light shorty earns its place in the bag for anyone planning long sessions rather than quick dips.

On wind and swell we have nothing verified: no wave-height series and no April wind series for this stretch of coast, so we publish no figure for either. What we can date is the calendar. The Atlantic hurricane season, which NOAA runs from June 1 to November 30, does not touch April at all, and the county’s own description of the key, soft turquoise water over quartz-crystal sand, is the baseline you are working from.

How busy is Siesta Key Beach in April? Crowds and prices

April is the closing month of the peak season Visit Sarasota County names outright, January through April, and the county’s advice for that window is unvarnished: the lots fill fast, arrive as early as you can. On prices we will not pretend to more than we hold. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the key, so we crown no month expensive and no month cheap.

What the peak label does change is the search itself. We could not verify a booking lead time for Siesta Key, so no number of weeks comes from us. The usable version is simpler: a bed within walking distance of the public beach removes the parking problem from every morning of the trip, and those are the rooms that go first inside a named peak window. Our Florida lodging guide handles the choice of base and the cost guide handles the tiers.

We could not verify Sarasota County’s tourist development tax rate, so we give no percentage for it. Treat the nightly figure you see when you book as provisional and read the final line before you confirm, because the total at checkout is the number that lands on the card.

If one line of an April budget deserves the upgrade, it is proximity rather than the room. Siesta Key Public Beach and Pavilion holds 976 cars, and in this window those spaces go long before lunch. Sleeping on the key, or catching the free 77 Islander Siesta trolley that runs daily roughly every 30 minutes from 8 to 10 a.m., buys back the hour you would otherwise spend circling. Accesses 2, 3, 10 and 13 will not rescue you: they are pedestrian entrances with no parking, or a single accessible space.

Things to do in Siesta Key Beach in April

April is the beach month without asterisks. Hurricane season has not begun, the water has come up 3.5 degrees since March, and the afternoon high of 82.5°F sits a full five degrees under May’s. A day that runs from seven in the morning to sunset costs you nothing in heat management that a hat and a shade umbrella cannot handle, which is not true of the summer months on the same sand.

Siesta Key Public Beach and Pavilion is the main event: 976 parking spaces behind the quartz-crystal sand that U.S. News & World Report ranked best in the country for 2026. Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach, further south on the same key, are separate beaches with their own accesses rather than other names for Siesta Beach. Lido Key is a free ride away on the BayRunner trolley, running daily every 20 to 30 minutes between 8 a.m. and noon.

The sand itself barely notices the calendar. What April moves is the air and the water around it: a 77.4°F Gulf against a 62.7°F dawn means the first swim of the day feels warmer than the walk down to it. That inversion is gone by May, when the water reaches 82.9°F and the air climbs to 87.5°F, and it is the reason an early April swim wakes you up rather than wearing you out.

The free part of April is the part that solves the month’s one real problem. Both trolleys cost nothing to ride: the 77 Islander Siesta every 30 minutes from 8 to 10 a.m., the BayRunner across to Lido Key every 20 to 30 minutes until noon. We could not verify a parking charge at the public beach lot, so we quote no price for it and leave you to read the posted signage on arrival.

Siesta Key Beach in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts in the lot. Sunrise on April 15 is 7:03 a.m., and a car parked by eight turns those 976 spaces into a choice rather than a lottery. Swim between nine and eleven, while the Gulf is climbing toward its 77.4°F afternoon reading and there is room to put a chair anywhere. Give the middle of the day to an umbrella or leave the sand entirely, since 82.5°F under open Florida sun runs hotter than the number sounds. Be back by five for a 7:56 p.m. sunset.

Day two goes south or across the water. Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach make a slower morning than the pavilion, with their own accesses and their own parking arithmetic. The alternative is the free BayRunner to Lido Key, every 20 to 30 minutes until noon. If the sky turns, remember the shape of April rain here: three days in the month reach 0.10 inch, and most of that falls as a shower that hands the towels back within the hour, so sit it out under the pavilion roof rather than driving off the key.

Siesta Key Beach in April vs March and May

Measure March April May
Average high 78.2°F 82.5°F 87.5°F
Average low 58.1°F 62.7°F 68.2°F
Precipitation 2.85 in 2.46 in 2.58 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 3.6 3.0 3.8
Sea surface 73.9°F 77.4°F 82.9°F

March runs 78.2°F by day and 58.1°F at night, with 2.85 inches of rain over 3.6 wet days and a Gulf at 73.9°F. May runs 87.5°F and 68.2°F, 2.58 inches over 3.8 wet days, and a sea at 82.9°F. April lands between them on temperature and below both on rain, with the lowest monthly total of the three at 2.46 inches and the fewest days at 0.10 inch or more, at 3.0. The air normals come from the NOAA station. The sea figures come from the marine model’s daily maxima.

Shift four weeks back and you gain cooler nights for sleeping and lose 3.5 degrees of water, enough to turn a swim into a dare for anyone who hesitates at 73.9°F. Our March guide makes that case in full. Shift four weeks forward and the Gulf becomes bathwater at 82.9°F, while the afternoon climbs to 87.5°F and wet days tick up to 3.8. One direction costs you swimming, the other costs you shade.

Is April a good time to visit Siesta Key Beach?

Yes, for anyone whose trip is built around water and daylight. A 77.4°F sea, 82.5°F afternoons, 12 hours 52 minutes of light on the 15th and three wet days out of thirty is about as close to a sure thing as a Florida month offers. No, for anyone who wants an empty lot at ten in the morning, because January through April is precisely the window the county warns about, and 976 spaces is a finite number.

If warm water is the entire point of the trip, May wins by a wide margin: 82.9°F against April’s 77.4°F, in exchange for 3.8 wet days instead of 3.0 and an afternoon that reaches 87.5°F. If the point is sleeping with the windows open and walking at midday without calculating shade, March’s 58.1°F nights are worth the colder Gulf.

Between March and May, April is the only month whose water clears 77°F while the afternoon high stays under 85°F, and neither neighbor manages both.

The last word

Book the bed on the key and the rest of April arranges itself: you walk to the 976 spaces you no longer need, and the alarm goes off at seven instead of six. One figure worth filing before you go: 0.6 day in an average April records an inch of rain or more, so roughly three Aprils in five deliver one genuine soaking and the other two never do. Leave a single afternoon loose in the plan and you have covered it.
