SILVER GLEN SPRINGS · JANUARY · THE MONTH GUIDE
January is the month when the air and the water here part company. The nearest official thermometer, at Gainesville Regional Airport, averages a 67.1°F afternoon and a 42.6°F night across the 1991-2020 period. The spring’s output does not follow a calendar at all: the USGS gauge on the run measured 87 cubic feet per second leaving the vent on September 11, 2026.
What the date buys you is a swim with none of summer around it. What it costs you is the walk back to the car, plus 3.29 inches of rain spread over about five wet days, more than either neighboring month. If you would rather pick the month by statewide logic, our Florida calendar takes the whole year in order.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SILVER GLEN SPRINGS · JANUARY
January gives you 67.1°F afternoons over a spring whose flow has no season, at the cost of 42.6°F mornings and about six freezing nights.
AVG HIGH 67.1°F · 5.2 WET DAYS · 6.2 FREEZE NIGHTS · AIR NORMALS READ 48 MILES AWAY
Go for: swimming in cool air, a short dry-season drive, and water whose discharge does not care what month it is.
Think twice before: planning a morning on the bank in swimsuits, or camping nearby with summer gear when one night in five reaches freezing.

One caveat before the numbers start. Every figure here for air and rain comes from NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly normals recorded at station USW00012816, Gainesville Regional Airport, about 48 miles from the vent. That is a real thermometer rather than a modeled grid cell, and it is also 48 miles of inland Florida away. Treat it as the regional shape of January, not as a reading taken at the water’s edge.
Silver Glen Springs weather in January: average highs, lows and rain days
| January at Gainesville Rgnl AP (1991-2020) | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 67.1°F |
| Average low | 42.6°F |
| Precipitation | 3.29 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 5.2 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 1.1 |
| Nights at 32°F or below | 6.2 |
| Daylight on January 15 | 10 h 31 min |
NOAA’s normals put the January average high at 67.1°F and the average low at 42.6°F, with 3.29 inches of precipitation over the month. Those are thirty-year averages, so a run of 75°F afternoons and a week that never clears 55°F both live comfortably inside them. Nothing in the set describes the water: the normals measure air, and the whole appeal of a Florida spring is that its water ignores the calendar.
Measurable rain falls on about 5.2 days, roughly one day in six, leaving some twenty-five dry ones in a normal month. Winter rain in Florida arrives with fronts rather than with the afternoon thunderstorms of the wet season described in our state guide, so a gray morning tends to mean a gray day instead of a twenty-minute soaking at three o’clock.
Between 42.6°F and 67.1°F sits 24.5 degrees of swing inside a single day, and a swim lands right in the middle of it. Pack the swimsuit, then pack for a cold parking lot: fleece or hoodie, long pants, a towel you do not mind ruining, and a full dry change left in the car. Wool socks do more for the drive home than a second towel.
On January 15 the sun rises at 7:20 a.m. and sets at 5:51 p.m. local time, for 10 hours 31 minutes of daylight. The usable warm stretch runs from late morning to mid-afternoon, so a swim that starts at three finishes in shade. Whatever driving remains after that happens in the dark, and our getting-around guide covers the roads.
How warm is Silver Glen Springs in January?
The month’s normal high is 67.1°F and its normal low 42.6°F, a spread of 24.5 degrees inside twenty-four hours. Both describe air. We could not verify a measured water temperature at this spring, so we quote none. And where water-temperature tables do exist for Florida, they usually publish an average of daily maxima, which runs warmer than a true 24-hour mean.
Dawn at 42.6°F is jacket weather by any American standard, and the air takes until early afternoon to settle into the sixties (est.). Swim in that window and dress for autumn the rest of the time. A neoprene top is the difference between ten minutes in the water and an hour, and it does as much for the walk back as it does for the swim.
About 6.2 nights in an average January drop to 32°F or below at the Gainesville gauge, one night in five. That figure lands on the windshield rather than on the spring, but it decides what you sleep in. Anyone camping or sleeping in a van nearby should bring a real cold-weather bag instead of a summer quilt, and our Florida lodging guide handles the indoor alternatives.
How busy is Silver Glen Springs in January? Crowds, fees and hours
We found no occupancy series and no visitor counts for this spring, so we crown no month busy and none cheap. What can be said sits on the calendar: January falls inside Florida’s dry season, November through April. Among the three months around it, January also carries the lowest average high, and 67.1°F afternoons ask more of a swimmer than February’s 70.9°F.
Booking lead time is the piece we could not measure. The Florida State Parks site answered our automated reads with a 403 on September 11, 2026, so we read no capacity rule, no reservation window and no closure notice for January. Call the park directly before you set an alarm for a 7:20 a.m. sunrise, especially if a weekend and a warm forecast coincide.
No entrance fee and no opening hour could be verified for Silver Glen Springs, so we print neither. Fees in Florida vary by park and by season, and a price copied from another spring does not transfer. The rest of the budget lives in our Florida cost guide, and the practical rules sit in know before you go.
The one purchase that changes this particular month is neoprene. A 2 or 3 mm top, rented or bought, turns a cold-morning dip into an actual swim, and a second dry change of clothes does the same for the drive out. Beyond that, a thermos and a windproof layer cover what 42.6°F mornings throw at you.
Things to do in Silver Glen Springs in January

The summer version of this place is a hot walk to a cool swim, and in January the ratio flips. The air tops out near 67.1°F while the vent discharges at the same rate it holds all year. Winter is also when travelers go looking for manatees in Florida springs, though we verified no manatee count for Silver Glen: our manatee guide names the places where the animals are counted.
The run itself is the attraction. USGS station 02236160 measured 87 cubic feet per second leaving the vent on September 11, 2026, and that volume is why the water stays clear: it is replaced faster than it can cloud. Florida law also reserves a protected category, Outstanding Florida Springs, defined in Florida Statutes 373.802(5) as the state’s historic first-magnitude springs plus six named individually in the text. We did not confirm which list this spring sits on.
Between July and January the discharge does not budge. The air does all the moving: 24.5 degrees between the January night and the January afternoon, and 6.2 nights at or below freezing. Plan the twenty minutes after the swim more carefully than the swim, with the dry clothes within reach rather than in a bag at the far end of the trail.
We could not verify a fee-free day, a fee schedule or opening hours, so we promise none of the three. If you want a January built only from attractions with published prices, our Florida things-to-do guide names them across the state.
Silver Glen Springs in January: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise is 7:20 a.m. with the air near 42.6°F, so leave the swim alone until late morning. Arrive around 10:30, walk the run while the temperature climbs, get in between noon and 2:30 when the afternoon is closest to 67.1°F, and be dry and dressed by three. That still leaves enough of the 10 hours 31 minutes of daylight to be on the road before 5:51 p.m.
Day two depends on the sky. Roughly one January day in six carries measurable rain, and winter rain comes with a front, so a wet morning often means a wet afternoon. Trade the water for road miles then, with St. Augustine and its Spanish old town as the standing wet-weather answer in north Florida. If the sky clears instead, repeat day one and start an hour earlier.
Silver Glen Springs in January vs December and February
| 1991-2020 normals | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 69.3°F | 67.1°F | 70.9°F |
| Average low | 45.2°F | 42.6°F | 45.9°F |
| Precipitation | 2.88 in | 3.29 in | 2.67 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.5 | 5.2 | 4.1 |
January comes out colder and wetter than both. Its 67.1°F high sits 2.2 degrees below December’s 69.3°F and 3.8 below February’s 70.9°F, while its 42.6°F low runs 2.6 and 3.3 degrees under the same two. Rain keeps the same order: 3.29 inches against 2.88 and 2.67, over 5.2 wet days rather than 4.5 and 4.1. We verified no water temperature for any of the three months, and the discharge that gives the spring its character has no month at all.
Shift four weeks and you are trading about three degrees. February brings the warmest afternoons of the trio and the fewest wet days, with the same unchanged water underneath. December sits between the two at 69.3°F and 4.5 wet days, inside the holiday weeks. Waiting until February gains you 3.8 degrees of afternoon and one fewer wet day; going in January costs you those and changes nothing about the swim itself.
Is January a good time to visit Silver Glen Springs?
January works if you treat the spring as a swim inside a cool day rather than a beach afternoon. Confident swimmers, photographers and anyone who prefers a jacket to a heat index get the version of this place they came for. It works badly for a group that pictures lying on the bank in swimsuits at nine in the morning, when the air is still climbing out of the low forties.
If that describes your group, February is the straightforward swap: 70.9°F afternoons, 45.9°F nights, 2.67 inches of rain over 4.1 wet days, and the same flow from the same vent. March and April run further into the dry season, and our Florida calendar takes the remaining months in order. Families weighing the whole trip will want the kids’ guide alongside it.
One thing January holds that neither neighbor does: about 6.2 nights at or below 32°F, which sets the widest air gap of the three months over water that never moved.
The last word
Decide on the morning, not the month. If you can arrange to be at the water between noon and 2:30, January is a good day at Silver Glen Springs, and if your schedule forces a nine o’clock start, take February. One number we kept back until here: in an average January, 1.1 day delivers an inch of rain or more, so most Januaries contain a single genuine washout. Call the park before you drive, since we could read neither its hours nor its fee, and put the dry socks in the car first.
