WEEKI WACHEE SPRINGS · FLORIDA · OCTOBER
October takes five degrees off a Weeki Wachee afternoon and cuts the rain in half. Normal highs run 84.5°F against September’s 89.5, and the month collects 2.79 inches of rain instead of 5.79. Measurable rain falls on 4.0 days rather than 8.1. The spring itself is fed from the aquifer and does not follow the calendar, so what really changes from one month to the next is the air you step back into when you climb out.
That makes for a simple trip: two days, one bag and an early alarm. The state counts 255 parking spaces at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, and on a clear Saturday that number shapes the morning more than anything else. Book a room within short driving distance of the gate, plan the swim for the warm middle of the day, and bring something with sleeves for a dawn that averages 61.7°F. Our Weeki Wachee guide covers the park the rest of the year.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · WEEKI WACHEE SPRINGS · OCTOBER
October is the month to swim here without September’s storm count: 84.5°F afternoons, 2.79 inches of rain across 4.0 wet days, and a 255-space lot that decides how early you leave.
NOAA 1991–2020 NORMALS · 84.5°F / 61.7°F · 4.0 RAIN DAYS · 255 PARKING SPACES
Go for: spring swimming with half of September’s wet days, 11 hours 31 minutes of daylight on the 15th, and paddling from the park’s single canoe, kayak and tube launch.
Think twice before: driving up mid-morning on a bright weekend: the park has 255 parking spaces, and when the lot fills the gate closes.

Two sources carry the numbers below: NOAA NCEI’s 1991–2020 monthly normals from the Brooksville airport gauge for the air, and Florida’s 2024 facilities inventory for what the park physically holds. Where neither answers, we say so rather than guess, and the entrance fee is the clearest case of that.
Weeki Wachee Springs weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days
| October at the Brooksville gauge | Normal, 1991–2020 |
|---|---|
| Average high | 84.5°F |
| Average low | 61.7°F |
| Rainfall | 2.79 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.0 |
| Days with 1.00 in or more | 0.5 |
| Nights at 32°F or below | 0.1 |
| Daylight on October 15 | 11 hr 31 min |
Every figure here comes from NOAA NCEI’s 1991–2020 monthly normals for station USW00012818, Brooksville Hernando Co AP: a real airport thermometer about 27 miles (44 km) from the spring, not a reanalysis grid cell. October reads 84.5°F for the average high, 61.7°F for the average low and 2.79 inches of precipitation. Those numbers describe the air over Hernando County, not the water in the run, and the distance between the gauge and the gate is worth keeping in mind on a borderline morning.
Four days in an average October record at least a tenth of an inch, so roughly one visiting day in eight arrives with measurable rain. Half a day per month, over the long run, brings an inch or more: a real soaking lands in about every second October. The other 27 days are dry enough to plan around, and a wet hour in Florida rarely cancels a swim you were already in.
Between 84.5°F and 61.7°F there are 22.8 degrees, and you will meet both ends the same day. Pack a fleece or a sweatshirt for the first hour at the lot, a swimsuit you can already be wearing by ten, and a second dry shirt for the drive home. Coming out of spring water into low-60s air at dusk feels a great deal colder than the afternoon led you to believe.
On October 15 the sun sets at 7:01 p.m. local, closing a day of 11 hours 31 minutes. Light on the water softens well before that. Build the day around a swim from late morning to about four, then keep the final hour for drying off, packing the car and getting out ahead of the last of the light.
How warm is Weeki Wachee Springs in October?
The normal high of 84.5°F belongs to the middle of the afternoon, and the normal low of 61.7°F to the hour before sunrise. Those 22.8 degrees are the shape of an October day here: full summer at two o’clock, something like a northern fall at seven in the morning. September never hands you the cool end, with a low of 70.1°F, and November takes back the warm one, with a high of 77.9°F.
In practice you arrive in long sleeves. By ten they are in the bag, by one you are in the water, and around six you want them again. Sun in late October still burns at these latitudes, so sunscreen goes on before the first swim rather than after lunch. A towel that dries fast beats a thick one, because it has to work twice in the same afternoon.
Frost is nearly theoretical: the Brooksville gauge records 0.1 nights at or below 32°F in an average October, which works out to one October in ten with a single freezing night, and that gauge sits inland from the spring. We found no measured water temperature for the run in sources we could read, so we publish no figure for the water itself. Any number you see quoted elsewhere for it is not ours.
How busy is Weeki Wachee Springs in October? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Weeki Wachee or Hernando County, so we name no month cheap and no month expensive. What can be dated is the calendar around the water. October comes after the summer vacation weeks, and it halves September’s count of wet days, from 8.1 to 4.0. More clear Saturdays means more cars at the gate, not fewer, so the quiet you are hoping for is a weekday morning, not a season.
The state counts 255 parking spaces at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, and that figure runs a bright October morning more than any opening hour does. When the lot fills, the gate closes. We could not verify whether the park publishes an opening time or a capacity notice, because floridastateparks.org returned a 403 to our automated reads on September 11, 2026. Call ahead the day before, and on a clear forecast plan to be in line during the first hour of sun.
We could not verify the Hernando County lodging tax, so we give no percentage rather than carry a rate over from a neighboring county. Florida state-park admission prices vary by park and by season, so a figure from another spring does not transfer here.
The one place where spending more genuinely changes October is the bed. A room close enough to reach the gate early turns into a parking space, and a parking space turns into the whole day. Beyond the room we found nothing else to price: no ticket cost, no shuttle, no seasonal surcharge we could confirm. Our Florida trip-cost guide handles the wider budget, and where to stay sorts the regions.
Things to do in Weeki Wachee Springs in October

October is the last month on the way down when the air still agrees with a wet swimsuit. Afternoons at 84.5°F sit five degrees under September’s without September’s 5.79 inches of rain, and November pulls the average high to 77.9°F with lows of 52.3. For swimming, paddling and sitting around afterward in a damp towel, this combination shows up once a year in this direction.
Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is the destination and, for most visitors, the entire trip. Florida’s 2024 facilities inventory counts one designated swimming area, one canoe, kayak and tube launch, and 255 parking spaces. With a single swim area, the lot count is the best proxy we have for how crowded the water gets. We found no entrance fee, no opening hour and no manatee count in sources we could read, so we quote none of the three. Manatee season across the state is covered in our manatee guide.
Florida law places springs of this size in a protected class it calls Outstanding Florida Springs: every historic first-magnitude spring as determined by the Florida Geological Survey, plus six named by hand in the statute. A spring that large is fed from the aquifer rather than from last week’s rain, so the seasonal story sits entirely in the air above it. That is the 84.5°F October afternoon against a 77.9°F November one, and the difference shows up when you get out, not when you get in.
Nothing in our sources names a fee-free day in October at this park, and since we could not read the regular fee either, we will not tell you what a family pays at the gate. Put that question on the same call as the opening hour. For outdoor days elsewhere in the state that cost nothing to enter, our things-to-do guide is the place to start.
Weeki Wachee Springs in October: a two-day itinerary
Start day one at the water. Sunrise falls at 7:30 a.m. in mid-October, so an early breakfast puts you in the 255-space lot while there are still spaces in it. Swim from late morning, once the air has climbed out of the 60s toward its 84.5°F peak, take the middle of the day slowly, and save two o’clock to four for the warmest stretch in and out of the run. Sunset at 7:01 p.m. sets the end of the outdoor day: dry clothes on, car packed, dinner in town.
Day two goes to the launch, the park’s one ramp for canoes, kayaks and tubes, and the early start matters for the same reason it did yesterday. If the weather turns, keep the arithmetic in mind: four days in an average October bring measurable rain, and one October in two brings a single inch-plus day. A wet morning is a reason to push the swim to the afternoon rather than scrap it, and a drive day fits neatly with the statewide seasonal picture.
Weeki Wachee Springs in October vs September and November
| Normal, 1991–2020 | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 89.5°F | 84.5°F | 77.9°F |
| Average low | 70.1°F | 61.7°F | 52.3°F |
| Rainfall | 5.79 in | 2.79 in | 1.59 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 8.1 | 4.0 | 3.0 |
The highs step down by 5.0 degrees and then by 6.6: 89.5°F in September, 84.5 in October, 77.9 in November. The lows fall faster, from 70.1°F to 61.7 and on to 52.3, a slide of 17.8 degrees in eight weeks. Rain drops harder still, from 5.79 inches over 8.1 wet days to 2.79 over 4.0, then 1.59 over 3.0. The spring is the constant behind all three, and we have no measured water temperature to set beside them.
Shift back four weeks and you buy 5.0 degrees of afternoon and 8.4 degrees of night warmth, paying 3.00 extra inches of rain spread over twice as many wet days. Shift forward four weeks and the rain nearly stops, but the afternoon gives up 6.6 degrees and the dawn gives up 9.4. September is also the month our September guide handles in full. November swimming still works if you bring a robe for afterward, since dawn there averages 52.3°F.
Is October a good time to visit Weeki Wachee Springs?
Yes for swimmers, paddlers and anyone who wants Florida water without the summer storm count: 84.5°F afternoons, 4.0 wet days, 11 hours 31 minutes of daylight on the 15th. No if you need a guaranteed parking space at ten on a clear Saturday, because 255 spaces is 255 spaces and the gate closes when they are gone. And no if manatees are the point of the trip, since we could not verify any count or season for them here.
If that lands on no, November is the month to move to rather than September. It trades 6.6 degrees of afternoon for a nearly dry month, 1.59 inches across 3.0 days, and its cooler mornings suit anyone who would rather walk the park than swim it. September runs the wrong way for a rain-averse traveler at 5.79 inches over 8.1 days.
What October alone puts together is the overlap: a swimmable 84.5°F afternoon sitting on top of a rain count already cut from 8.1 wet days to 4.0.
The last word
Book the room within short driving distance of the gate, set the alarm for the 7:30 a.m. sunrise, and you will not spend the morning circling 255 full spaces. One last figure, because it reframes the rain: October’s 2.79 inches fall across 4.0 wet days, about 0.70 inch per rainy day, which is almost exactly September’s 0.71. October rain is no gentler than September rain. There is simply half as much of it, so pack the same poncho and expect to use it half as often.
