Silver Glen Springs in July: Weather, Rain Days and How It Compares to June and August

NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals put the July afternoon at 91.1°F and the pre-dawn low at 71.6°F, with 6.68 inches of rain over the month. Those numbers describe the air. The water at the vent holds the same temperature all year, and it arrives fast: a USGS gauge measured 87 cubic feet per second leaving the spring, replaced faster than it can cloud.

Rain of a tenth of an inch or more falls on 10.5 days in an average July, and 1.9 of those days deliver an inch or more. That is the trade for the light. On July 15 the sun is up for 13 hours 52 minutes and does not set until 8:28 p.m., which buys a swim at six in the evening as easily as at ten in the morning.

Go for: a swim at the hottest hour of the Florida year, evenings with light until 8:28 p.m., and water that reads clear because 87 cubic feet of it leave the vent every second.

Think twice before: counting on a dry afternoon. Measurable rain shows up on 10.5 days of an average July, and 1.9 days bring an inch or more.

Every figure here is an air figure, taken from a real thermometer rather than a model grid, and that thermometer sits at Gainesville Regional Airport. Fees, hours and the drive are handled elsewhere: our month-by-month Florida guide covers the state calendar, and the getting-around guide covers the car.

The source is NOAA NCEI’s monthly normals for 1991-2020, station USW00012816, at Gainesville Regional Airport, roughly 78 km from the spring, about 48 miles. That matters twice. A station reading is a measured thermometer rather than a reanalysis cell, and 48 miles of central Florida is close enough for the shape of a month and loose enough that your own afternoon can land a degree or two either side of 91.1°F.

In practice, 10.5 rain days means measurable rain about one day in three, and 1.9 days at an inch or more means the 6.68 inches do not arrive as drizzle. Two Julys out of a typical three bring at least a pair of genuine soakings. Most of what falls comes down in a concentrated stretch rather than across the whole day, so a washed-out hour is far more common than a washed-out visit.

Between the 71.6°F low and the 91.1°F high sits a swing of 19.5°F, and none of it is cold. Nothing warm needs packing. What does: a hat, more water than feels reasonable, a dry shirt for the drive home, and a bag that actually closes, because on those 1.9 heavy days everything left on a towel gets soaked.

Daylight on July 15 runs 13 hours 52 minutes, from a 6:36 a.m. sunrise to an 8:28 p.m. sunset, converted from the published UTC times. The useful part of that is the tail. Light lingers well past dinner, so an evening swim is a real option and the drive out never happens in the dark.

How warm is Silver Glen Springs in July?

For the air, the month tops out at an average 91.1°F and bottoms at an average 71.6°F, a 19.5°F daily range. For the water, we have no verified reading: no temperature series for this vent turned up in our sources, so no number goes here. If you find one quoted elsewhere, check whether it is an average of daily maxima, which runs a touch warmer than a true 24-hour average.

That range sorts the day for you. Before nine, at something close to 71.6°F, the walk in from the car is pleasant and the shade still works. By two in the afternoon, near 91.1°F with July humidity on top, standing around is the uncomfortable part and being in the water is the comfortable one. Dress for one outfit: swimsuit, shirt, hat, and a towel you can get to quickly.

Freezing nights do not enter into it. The normals we read carry no frost count for July, and an average low of 71.6°F sits 39 degrees above the freezing mark. Central Florida’s cold snaps belong to the other end of the calendar.

How busy is Silver Glen Springs in July, and what does it cost to get in?

July falls inside American school vacation and inside the wet half of the Florida year. We found no visitor count, no occupancy series and no room-rate history for the spring, so we name no month the busiest and quote no nightly price. State-level budgeting lives in our Florida cost guide, which is the right place for the arithmetic of a week.

How many weeks ahead to book is a question we cannot answer with data, because no lead-time series exists in our sources. What we can date is the day itself. Sunrise on July 15 is 6:36 a.m., and on a summer Saturday the sensible plan is to be parked inside the first two hours of daylight rather than to gamble on an eleven o’clock arrival. Bases for the region are compared in our where-to-stay guide.

We could not verify a lodging-tax rate, so we give no percentage. Ask the property to quote its tax line before you commit, and read the total rather than the headline rate. The same goes for entry: floridastateparks.org returned a 403 to our automated reads on September 11, 2026, so we publish no fee and no opening hour for the spring, and a price copied from another park does not transfer.

Paying more changes exactly one thing in a 91.1°F month, and it is where you sleep after the swim. A tent on a 71.6°F night with July humidity is a different night from a room with air conditioning. Call the managing office for campground rates and availability rather than counting on a site.

Things to do in Silver Glen Springs in July

Midday is the useful hour when the air hits 91.1°F · Illustration

Midday is the hour worth having here, and that is unusual for an outdoor plan in Florida. With the air averaging 91.1°F, a swim that would feel brisk in February is the reason to be in the water at noon. Light holding until 8:28 p.m. does the rest: a six o’clock arrival still leaves better than two hours of usable day.

The vent is the attraction, and it is measured. USGS gauge 02236160 recorded 87 cubic feet per second leaving it, which is the reason the water reads clear rather than tea-colored: it is replaced faster than it can cloud. We could not read an entrance fee, an opening hour or a manatee count from the official pages, so we publish none of the three. If manatees are the point of the trip, our manatee guide covers where and when.

The water does not move with the calendar. The air does, and that is what makes a season here. June afternoons average 90.3°F and August afternoons 90.5°F, so July’s 91.1°F opens the widest gap of the three between what you stand in and what you swim in. On paper it is a degree. At two in the afternoon it is the whole experience.

Since we could not confirm what costs money, here is what costs nothing either way: the gauge readings. Station 02236160 publishes to the public National Water Information System, so flow can be checked from a phone before anyone gets in the car. Daylight is the other freebie, and in July there are 13 hours 52 minutes of it.

Silver Glen Springs in July: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Sunrise is 6:36 a.m., so a seven o’clock arrival buys three hours nearer the 71.6°F low than the 91.1°F high, and the walk in is still comfortable. Swim from mid-morning through early afternoon, eat in the shade during the hottest stretch, then read the sky, because with 1.9 inch-plus days in an average July the afternoon is the part that gets rearranged. The final hour before an 8:28 p.m. sunset is the calmest of the day.

Day two starts the same way and ends differently. Hold the morning for the water again and keep a dry bag packed, since July’s 6.68 inches arrive in a handful of deliveries rather than a steady drizzle. If the sky turns, trade the second afternoon for a drive: our things-to-do guide carries the indoor-friendly options, and St. Augustine makes a full day out of a rained-off one.

Silver Glen Springs in July vs June and August

Measure June July August

Average low 69.5°F 71.6°F 72.0°F
Precipitation 7.56 in 6.68 in 6.40 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 11.0 10.5 10.4
Spring water No season No season No season

Side by side, the spread across the three months is narrow. June averages 90.3°F by day and 69.5°F at night, July 91.1°F and 71.6°F, August 90.5°F and 72.0°F. Rain separates them a little more than heat does: 7.56 inches in June, 6.68 in July, 6.40 in August, over 11.0, 10.5 and 10.4 days of measurable rain. The water sits outside the comparison, holding one temperature through all three.

Shift four weeks back to June and you pay 0.88 inch of extra rain and half an extra rain day for nights 2.1°F cooler. Shift four weeks forward to August and rain eases by 0.28 inch and a tenth of a rain day, while nights warm to 72.0°F, the muggiest of the three. Neither swap touches the swim. Both change how a tent sleeps and how often the afternoon gets rewritten.

Is July a good time to visit Silver Glen Springs?

Yes for anyone building the day around the water and treating the afternoon as negotiable: a 91.1°F high is precisely what makes a spring swim feel like a gift rather than a dare. No for anyone who wants dry, mild hours outdoors on a schedule. With 10.5 rain days and heat index on top of the 91.1°F normal, this is not a hiking month or a picnic-at-two month.

If that rules July out, August is the small correction and the dry half of the year is the real one. August shaves 0.6°F off the average afternoon and 0.28 inch off the rain, which barely registers on the ground. For genuinely different conditions you have to leave summer altogether, and our month-by-month Florida guide sets out when that begins.

What July gives that June and August do not is the contrast itself: 91.1°F is the warmest daytime normal of the three, and it meets water that has not shifted a degree since January.

The last word

Decide one thing before you leave the house, and it is what happens at two in the afternoon. Book the bed with air conditioning, be at the water by seven while the air is still near its 71.6°F low, and plan the storm hour in the car or under a roof. One more thing worth knowing before you go: Florida Statutes 373.802(5) protects what it calls Outstanding Florida Springs, meaning every historic first-magnitude spring the Florida Geological Survey recognizes, plus six named individually in the statute.
