WEEKI WACHEE SPRINGS · FLORIDA · APRIL
April is the last full month of Florida’s dry season, and at Weeki Wachee it arrives with numbers worth booking around: an average high of 82.8°F, an average low of 55.7°F, and 2.18 inches of rain spread over roughly three wet days. The spring itself is indifferent to all of that. Its water runs the same in April as in August. What the month changes is the air you walk through between the parking lot and the water.
What April takes away is the cool morning cover that March still offers, and what it does not yet impose is May’s 88.1°F heat. For the wider question of which Florida week to buy, our best-time guide runs the twelve months. This is the April file: the normals, the 255-space lot, and whether to shift the trip four weeks either way.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · WEEKI WACHEE SPRINGS · APRIL
April hands you 82.8°F afternoons over water that keeps the same temperature all year, rain on roughly three days, and a 255-space lot that still has room on most mornings.
AVERAGE HIGH 82.8°F · AVERAGE LOW 55.7°F · 3.4 RAIN DAYS · 12H 55M OF DAYLIGHT
Go for: warm afternoons over a spring that never changes temperature, a paddle launch without the summer queue, and nights that average 55.7°F.
Think twice before: counting on a walk-up parking space on a weekend morning. The park has 255 of them, and when they fill the gate closes.

One caution before the numbers. The air readings come from an airport thermometer 27 miles inland, and the spring water is measured by nobody we could read. We say plainly below which is which.
Weeki Wachee Springs weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days
| April normal | Figure |
|---|---|
| Average high | 82.8°F |
| Average low | 55.7°F |
| Precipitation | 2.18 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.4 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.7 |
| Nights at 32°F or below | 0.1 |

Every figure here comes from NOAA NCEI’s 1991-2020 monthly normals, read at station USW00012818, Brooksville Hernando County Airport, about 27 miles (44 km) from the spring. That is a real thermometer rather than a modeled grid cell, and it measures the air. April averages 82.8°F by day, 55.7°F by night, and 2.18 inches of rain over the month. The spring’s own water has no season, so the normals here describe the walk from the lot to the bank, not the swim.
Rain reaches a tenth of an inch on 3.4 days in an average April, which works out to measurable rain roughly one day in nine. On a two-night trip, the arithmetic is on your side. Plan the drive-and-arrive day around the possibility anyway, since a shower that empties the swim area for forty minutes costs you nothing if it lands while you are eating.
The distance between a 7 a.m. start and a 3 p.m. swim is close to thirty degrees, and that is what fills the bag. A sweatshirt for the morning, sunscreen for an afternoon in the low 80s, a swimsuit worn under your clothes so you skip the changing line, and a second dry shirt. Wet skin in 55.7°F air ends a day faster than any forecast does.
On April 15 the sun rises at 7:02 a.m. and sets at 7:57 p.m., for 12 hours 55 minutes of daylight according to sunrise-sunset.org. The practical value sits at the end: the last hour of usable light falls after 7 p.m., late enough to swim at four, dry off at six, and still drive out before headlights matter.
How warm is Weeki Wachee Springs in April?
The month’s two anchor figures are 82.8°F and 55.7°F, a spread of 27.1 degrees. That is the widest of the three spring months: March runs 26.8 degrees apart, May only 25.5, because May’s nights climb to 62.6°F while its days push to 88.1. April therefore gives you the hottest afternoons that still come with genuinely cool nights.
In practice you dress twice. Long sleeves and closed shoes hold until about ten, when the boardwalk warms up and the layer goes into the bag. From noon to six you are in what most visitors would call beach clothes. After sunset the temperature heads back toward the mid-fifties, so the sweatshirt comes out again for dinner and the drive to wherever you booked.
Freezing is effectively off the table. NOAA counts 0.1 nights at or below 32°F in an average April at the Brooksville station, meaning roughly one freezing April night every ten years. Whatever else the month does, it will not frost your windshield.
How busy is Weeki Wachee Springs in April? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
April closes the November-to-April dry season that our Florida orientation lays out, and it sits just behind the spring-break weeks that make March the loudest month on this coast. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Hernando County, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can pin down is capacity at the gate.
Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection counts 255 parking spaces at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in its 2024 facilities inventory. When the lot fills, the gate closes, and that count decides a summer Saturday more than any posted hour does. April pressure runs below July pressure, but the mechanism does not change on a weekend morning. Sleep close enough to arrive early rather than driving in at eleven from a Gulf beach town. Our where-to-stay guide sorts the regions.
We could not verify Hernando County’s tourist development tax rate, so we give no percentage and no nightly surcharge. The statewide cost picture, including what rental cars and park days tend to add to a week, sits in what a Florida trip costs.
If one line of the budget changes this month, it is the car. Nothing about the spring runs on public transport, and the difference between a 9 a.m. arrival and a noon arrival in April is the difference between parking and turning around. Our getting-around guide covers the rental and the electronic tolls you will meet on the drive up from Tampa.
Things to do in Weeki Wachee Springs in April

April is the month where the air finally rewards getting out of the water. At 82.8°F you dry off in minutes on a bench instead of shivering through it, and you do that without May’s 88.1°F afternoons or its 4.4 rain days. A swim, a paddle and a picnic fit into one April day in a way they do not fit into a March day that tops out at 77.6°F.
The state’s inventory counts what the park actually holds: one designated swimming area, one canoe, kayak and tube launch, and those 255 parking spaces. The spring belongs to a protected class under Florida Statutes 373.802(5), the Outstanding Florida Springs, which covers every historic first-magnitude spring identified by the Florida Geological Survey plus six more named individually in the law. Manatees use Florida’s springs seasonally, and our manatee guide covers where and when.
The water does not move with the calendar. The air does, and that gap is the whole season here. In March you climb out into 77.6°F, in April into 82.8°F, in May into 88.1°F. Same swim, three very different fifteen minutes afterward. April is the point where the contrast stops being a shock and has not yet become relief from the heat.
On admission we have to be straight: we could not verify an entrance fee, an opening hour or a free-entry day for this park. The Florida State Parks site returned a 403 error to our reads on September 11, 2026, so we quote no price and promise nothing free. Call the park or check its official page the week you travel, and see our statewide things-to-do guide for what else fills a spring day.
Weeki Wachee Springs in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the 7:02 a.m. sunrise. Be on the road by eight in a sweatshirt, aim to park well before mid-morning while the 255 spaces still have gaps, and spend the cool first hours walking rather than swimming. Eat early. Take the water between noon and three, when the air is nearest that 82.8°F average and the difference between in and out is pleasant rather than brutal. Light holds until 7:57 p.m., so the late afternoon is yours.
Day two goes on the water: the park’s single launch, then an unhurried afternoon and a drive out in daylight. If the sky turns, remember that only 0.7 day in an average April brings an inch or more. Shift the swim to the far side of the shower, move lunch indoors, and trade the paddle for the drive toward the Gulf beaches if the rain settles in. Families adjusting the pace will find more in our Florida with kids guide.
Weeki Wachee Springs in April vs March and May
| Normal | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 77.6°F | 82.8°F | 88.1°F |
| Average low | 50.8°F | 55.7°F | 62.6°F |
| Precipitation | 2.66 in | 2.18 in | 3.35 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 3.7 | 3.4 | 4.4 |
| Day-to-night spread | 26.8°F | 27.1°F | 25.5°F |
All three columns come from the same NOAA station and the same 1991-2020 period, so they compare cleanly. April is 5.2 degrees warmer by day than March and 5.3 cooler than May. It is also the driest of the three at 2.18 inches, against 2.66 in March and 3.35 in May, and it carries the fewest wet days at 3.4. Nights are the real separator: 55.7°F in April against 62.6°F in May.
Shift four weeks back to March and you gain quieter water on weekdays and lose five degrees of afternoon comfort plus a colder walk to the car. Shift forward to May and you gain a swim that feels like relief, then pay for it with 1.17 more inches of rain, one extra wet day, and nights seven degrees warmer. Our March page makes the earlier case in full.
Is April a good time to visit Weeki Wachee Springs?
Yes, for anyone who wants to swim and then be comfortable standing around afterward. It is the driest of the spring months, the afternoons reach the low 80s, and the freeze risk is one night per decade. It is a weaker choice if your only free days are a Saturday and a Sunday in a school-break week, because the lot is the constraint and no reservation exists to protect you from it.
If April will not fit, take March rather than May. March gives up 5.2 degrees of afternoon warmth but keeps the wet-day count at 3.7 and avoids May’s 3.35 inches. The trade only reverses if your family wants warm nights more than dry days, in which case book May and accept the afternoons.
No other month pairs an 82.8°F afternoon with a 55.7°F night over water that never changes at all, and that 27.1-degree spread is April’s whole argument for a two-day trip.
The last word
Book two nights within an easy morning drive of the gate, arrive before the 255 spaces go, and let the afternoon do the work. One number nobody plans for: a soaking day, an inch of rain or more, turns up 0.7 times in an average April, so most April trips never meet one. If yours does, it is the day to drive to St. Augustine or the coast and come back for a dry paddle tomorrow.
