Homosassa Springs in February: Weather, Crowds and 74°F Spring Water

February hands Homosassa Springs an afternoon of 73.7°F and a dawn of 47.5°F, both averaged over thirty years at the nearest official thermometer. The spring under the boardwalk pays no attention: the USGS gauge at the vent read 74.3°F on September 11, 2026, and it sits near that figure in every season. So the month’s news is not the water. It is the air above it, cool enough that you want a fleece at breakfast and lose it by two.

That gap decides what February can and cannot do here. The state’s facility inventory lists no designated swimming area at the park and no canoe, kayak or tube launch, so the visit is a walk. Anyone booking a trip to get in the water with manatees is planning a different day, and our manatee guide covers it. Everything about this town that is true in all twelve months lives on the Homosassa Springs page.

February buys mid-70s afternoons over 74.3°F water, 3.5 wet days and two or three nights near freezing, which makes it a walking month rather than a swimming one.

Go for: 3,000 feet of boardwalk and two observation platforms walked in cool air, above water that stays near 74.3°F while the air around it changes by the month.

Think twice before: packing for a swim. The state lists no designated swimming area and no paddle launch here, and 2.8 nights in an average February drop to 32°F or below at the reference station.

One caveat before the normals below. Every air figure here comes from NOAA’s 1991-2020 monthly normals at station USW00012818, Brooksville Hernando County Airport, roughly 27 miles (44 km) inland from the vent. That is a real thermometer with thirty winters behind it, not a reanalysis grid cell, and it is the closest station carrying published normals. The water figure comes from a gauge standing in the spring itself.

NOAA’s normals put February’s average high at 73.7°F, its average low at 47.5°F and the month’s rainfall at 2.57 inches. Measured that way, February is the driest of the three winter months here: January runs 3.01 inches and March 2.66. The period is 1991 through 2020, so a warm week or a cold snap in any given year will sit well away from those figures.

Measurable rain falls on about 3.5 days at 0.10 inch or more. Call it one day in eight. A genuine soaking of an inch or more turns up 0.6 times in an average February, so roughly three Februarys in five see one. Rain here arrives with a front rather than on a daily afternoon clock, and we found no shelter in the state’s facility count, so treat a heavy hour as a coffee break somewhere with a roof.

The spread between that 73.7°F afternoon and that 47.5°F dawn is 26.2°F, which is what defeats single-layer packing. A fleece at 7 a.m., short sleeves by early afternoon, the fleece back on once the sun drops behind the cypress. Closed shoes matter more than you would think over three thousand feet of planking, and sunscreen still applies in a Florida winter.

On February 15 the sun rises at 7:07 a.m. and sets at 6:21 p.m. local time, giving 11 hours 14 minutes of daylight, converted from the UTC rise and set times for the site. The light softens from about half past four and the temperature falls with it. Anything you want to see in good light should be done by 5:30 p.m.

How warm is Homosassa Springs in February?

The month averages 73.7°F at its warmest and 47.5°F at its coldest, and the comparison worth making is with the spring rather than with the calendar. The gauge read 74.3°F, so an average February afternoon lands 0.6°F below the water. That 74.3°F is a single instantaneous reading taken on September 11, 2026, not a February average, and the gauge sits close to it in every season.

In practice the day has two wardrobes. At opening the air is nearer the night’s 47.5°F than the day’s high, so long pants, a warm layer and something over the ears earn their place at the rail on the observation platforms. By one or two in the afternoon you are in short sleeves with the fleece around your waist, and the same boardwalk walks like a different place.

Frost is normal, not folklore: 2.8 nights in an average February fall to 32°F or below at Brooksville. That count belongs to an inland airport 27 miles from the vent, and we have no freeze count for the spring itself, so read it as a warning for the car windshield and the early start rather than as a measurement at the park gate.

How busy is Homosassa Springs in February? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

February sits in the middle of Florida’s dry season, November through April, the stretch the whole state sells as its winter. Where the month lands on a price curve we cannot tell you: we found no monthly occupancy series and no room-rate series for this part of the Gulf coast, so we crown no month expensive and none cheap. Our Florida cost guide works in tiers for that reason, and the statewide calendar has the season in full.

On booking, we have no advance data for Citrus County, so we will not invent a number of weeks. What we do have is a hard figure at the gate. The state counts 197 parking spaces at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, and when the lot fills, the gate closes. That is the state’s own logic for a summer Saturday. Whether a February Saturday fills it, we could not verify. Two nights nearby covers the park and a second morning, and our where-to-stay guide sorts the regions.

We could not verify the county’s lodging tax rate, so no percentage appears in this section. Florida hotel bills carry sales tax plus a county levy on short stays, and the total you will actually pay shows up on the booking confirmation rather than in the nightly rate you compared.

The one place extra money changes this month is the distance between your bed and the gate. Beating 197 spaces is a matter of being ten minutes away at opening, not of paying for a better view. We could not read the park’s opening hour, so check it the night before. A car handles the rest of the trip, as our getting-around guide explains.

Things to do in Homosassa Springs in February

Walking three thousand feet of open-air boardwalk in the mid-70s, with no heat index and no afternoon storm clock, is what February gives that July does not. The number most readers want for this month, a manatee count, is the one we could not verify: the state wildlife pages would not render for our reads. We promise no animals, and for the swim-with side of that question, our manatee guide is the page.

The named place is Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, and the state counts what it holds: 3,000 feet of boardwalk, 2 observation platforms and those 197 parking spaces. The vent below reads 74.3°F. Florida law puts this water in the category it calls Outstanding Florida Springs, defined in statute 373.802(5), and the state’s own spring pages say that of all Florida’s springs offering a close look at native wildlife, few are more famous than this one.

What the month changes is the air, not the water. The gauge barely moves across a year, while the same station’s average high moves 6.9°F between January and March. In February the afternoon air and the spring are within a degree of each other. In July the air is far above it, and the walk, not the water, is what suffers.

On what it costs to walk in: we could not verify an entrance fee or an opening hour for this park. The state parks site returned 403 to our reads on September 11, 2026, and fees here vary by park and season, so a price found for another spring does not transfer. Check the park’s own page the evening before you drive.

Homosassa Springs in February: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Mid-February sunrise is 7:07 a.m., so the first hour after opening is the cold one and the quiet one: layer up, start the boardwalk from the lot end, and give the two observation platforms your patience while the air climbs out of the night’s 47.5°F. Take lunch off site at midday, come back for the warmest stretch around the 73.7°F mark, and be at the car before the 6:21 p.m. sunset.

Day two belongs to the river and the town: the spring run at 74.3°F, the Homosassa waterfront, and a second slow pass along the same 3,000 feet in flat morning light. If a front arrives, remember the odds are 0.6 day per February at an inch or more. Swap the boardwalk for a drive, come back the following morning, or point the car south for the day.

Homosassa Springs in February vs January and March

Measure January February March
Average high 70.7°F 73.7°F 77.6°F
Average low 44.3°F 47.5°F 50.8°F
Precipitation 3.01 in 2.57 in 2.66 in
Days at 0.10 in or more 4.2 3.5 3.7
Air vs the spring’s 74.3°F 3.6°F cooler 0.6°F cooler 3.3°F warmer

All three columns come from the same NOAA 1991-2020 series at Brooksville, so they compare cleanly. February runs 3.0°F warmer by day than January and 3.9°F cooler than March, with the driest total of the three at 2.57 inches and the fewest wet days at 3.5. The spring itself holds near 74.3°F through all three, which is why the useful line in that table is the last one.

Shift four weeks forward and you gain 3.9°F of afternoon and 3.3°F of night for 0.09 inch more rain, plus later sunsets. Shift four weeks back into January and you give up 3.0°F of daytime warmth and take 0.44 inch more rain across 0.7 more wet days. Neither swap touches the water, and neither buys you a swim: the park has no designated swimming area in any month.

Is February a good time to visit Homosassa Springs?

Yes, if your day is a walk. A 73.7°F afternoon, 3.5 wet days and better than eleven hours of light make the boardwalk easy from opening until late afternoon, and cool air beats a July heat index over the same planks. No, if the picture in your head involves getting in: there is no swim area and no paddle launch here, and a 47.5°F dawn is not the Florida of the poster.

If that reads too cool, take March. It costs 0.09 inch more rain and buys 3.9°F on the afternoon, 3.3°F on the night and a later sunset, which turns the last boardwalk hour from a cold one into a warm one. Families traveling with small children will feel that difference more than anyone, and our Florida-with-kids guide has the rest of the winter planning.

What February alone gives is an afternoon that lands within a degree of the spring’s own temperature, 73.7°F of air over 74.3°F of water, a match neither January nor March comes close to.

The last word

Book two nights, be at the gate at opening while the air is still in the fifties, and give the first cool hour to the 3,000 feet of boardwalk before anyone else has parked. One number to carry down there with you: the same USGS gauge measured 74 cubic feet per second leaving the vent, which is why the water is clear enough to count fish from the rail. Replaced that fast, it never gets time to cloud.
