SILVER SPRINGS · OCTOBER · FLORIDA
October is when the air over the spring finally loosens its grip. NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals put the month at an average high of 84.5°F and an average low of 66.1°F, on 2.62 inches of rain against September’s 5.21. The water underneath has no season at all: when we read the gauge, it was pushing 264 cubic feet per second out of the vent, the same as it does in July.
So a date in October is not a question about the water. It is a question about the air around it: 11 hours 30 minutes of daylight in mid-month, four wet days, and mornings cool enough to want a sleeve on the boardwalk. Where the month sits in the wider Florida year is a separate call, and our 12-month verdict makes it.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SILVER SPRINGS · OCTOBER
October hands Silver Springs half of September’s rain and dawns still above 66°F, so walk the boardwalk early, paddle late, and book your nights before the ten cabins go.
AIR 84.5°F / 66.1°F · 2.62 INCHES · 4.0 WET DAYS · NO DESIGNATED SWIM AREA
Go for: dry-side afternoons at 84.5°F, 4,775 feet of boardwalk, five observation platforms and a 6.3-mile paddling trail over water that never changes temperature.
Think twice before: planning a swim. The state’s 2024 facilities inventory records no designated swimming area at Silver Springs State Park.

Every figure here comes from a named source, and one caveat travels with them: the nearest official thermometer sits about 27 miles (44 km) away at Leesburg Municipal Airport, so the normals describe the area’s air rather than the shade over the spring run. The flow figure comes from a gauge in the water itself. For everything a single month does not decide, see our where to stay, getting around and trip cost guides.
Silver Springs weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days
| October, 1991-2020 normals | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 84.5°F |
| Average low | 66.1°F |
| Precipitation | 2.62 inches |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 4.0 |
| Days with 1.00 in or more | 0.5 |
| Daylight, October 15 | 11 h 30 min |
| Sunrise / sunset, October 15 | 7:28 a.m. / 6:58 p.m. |
These are station normals, not a grid-cell reanalysis: NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, 1991-2020, station USW00012819 at Leesburg Municipal Airport. October there averages 84.5°F by day and 66.1°F at night, on 2.62 inches of rain. A real thermometer in a real place, and that place is a county over from the vent. Read the numbers as the region’s air. The water in the run keeps its own schedule.
Rain lands about one day in eight: 4.0 days in an average October record at least 0.10 inch. The heavy end is rarer, 0.5 day at an inch or more, so a real soaking arrives roughly every second October. In a day, that usually reads as a wet hour and a boardwalk drying behind it. September runs 8.1 wet days for comparison, double the count on double the depth.
Pack for both ends of the day. A 66°F dawn on a wooden platform with cool water moving underneath is fleece weather for the first hour, and an 84.5°F mid-afternoon is a second shirt. Add a light rain shell for the four wet days, a hat for the open platforms, and closed shoes rather than water shoes: with no swimming area on the park’s inventory, sandals have nowhere useful to go.
October 15 gives 11 hours 30 minutes of daylight, sunrise at 7:28 a.m. and sunset at 6:58 p.m. local time. The last hour before that goes gold and flat, and the boardwalk takes it well. Call the park to confirm its opening and closing times when you book.
How warm is Silver Springs in October?
The month averages 84.5°F by day and 66.1°F by night, an 18.4-degree spread. September’s spread is narrower at 16.6 degrees, because its nights barely cool at all (73.1°F). November’s widens to 20.2 degrees on a 57.1°F low. October is where the gap between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. becomes the number that shapes your day.
In practice: long sleeves and coffee at the first observation platform, sleeves gone by ten, shade wanted by two. Humidity makes the 84.5°F afternoon feel heavier than the figure reads (est.), which is the argument for putting the 6.3-mile paddling trail under a canopy of trees rather than under the sun. Going out, the run cools faster than the parking lot once the sun drops at 6:58.
On freezing nights, we have no count to give: we found no daily-extremes series for the station, so we publish no number of October nights at or below 32°F. What the normals carry is a mean low of 66.1°F, some 34 degrees clear of freezing, and a monthly mean hides the coldest mornings by design. November’s 57.1°F low is where that question starts to be worth asking.
How busy is Silver Springs in October? Crowds, parking and prices
October’s place in the year is a calendar fact. A price ranking would need data we do not have: we found no occupancy series and no room-rate series for Silver Springs, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we do have is capacity. The state counts 1,686 parking spaces at Silver Springs State Park, and that count decides a summer Saturday, because when the lot fills, the gate closes. October sits past those Saturdays.
Booking here is an inventory problem before it is a budget one. The park holds ten cabins in total, and ten beds against a month of weekends is the whole argument for picking your nights early. We found no booking-window data, so we will not invent a number of weeks ahead. For a day visit, the lever is the hour: arrive near the 7:28 sunrise and 1,686 spaces become a formality.
Two blanks we would rather declare than fill. We could not verify the local lodging-tax rate, so no percentage comes from us. And we have no gate price: the Florida state parks site answered our automated reads with a 403 on September 11, 2026, so the entrance fee sits with the opening hours in the same column of unknowns. Confirm both with the park when you reserve.
The one upgrade that genuinely changes October is sleeping inside the gate. One of the ten cabins puts you on the 4,775 feet of boardwalk during the first hour of an 11h30 day, at 66°F, with the lot still empty behind you. Drive in instead and the same walk happens at nine, warmer, in company.
Things to do in Silver Springs in October

October hands back the whole afternoon. September delivers 89.7°F days on 5.21 inches of rain across 8.1 wet days, which keeps every outdoor plan provisional. October drops the day to 84.5°F and the rain to 2.62 inches. November’s 57.1°F dawns then turn the early paddle into a cold start. For a full day spent outside, first light to 6:58 p.m., these four or five weeks are the pick of the three.
The state’s 2024 facilities inventory counts what the park holds: 4,775 feet of boardwalk, five observation platforms, 6.3 miles of paddling trail and ten cabins. Two lines of that same document disagree about launches, one recording three canoe, kayak and tube launches and another recording none, and we cannot settle it from the report. Both lines agree on the thing most visitors assume: there is no designated swimming area at Silver Springs State Park.
Underground, the month means nothing. USGS gauge 02239500 read 264 cubic feet per second leaving the vent, water replaced faster than it can cloud, and that volume is why the limestone floor stays visible in any season. Above it, the air moves a long way: 89.7°F in September, 84.5°F in October, 77.3°F in November. The contrast between warm air and a cool run is what October gets right for anyone standing still on a platform with a camera.
On what costs nothing, we have to be careful. We could not verify an entrance fee, an opening hour or a free day here: the state parks site returned that 403, and the wildlife commission’s manatee page renders client-side, so we carry no manatee count for October either. Once you are through the gate, the five platforms and the boardwalk add nothing to the bill, and mid-October light holds until 6:58 p.m.
Silver Springs in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Sunrise at 7:28 a.m., so be at the gate for it: the 4,775 feet of boardwalk take an unhurried hour, and a 66.1°F average low makes that hour the best of the day. Mid-morning, work the five observation platforms while the sun is still low on the water. Lunch off your feet as the air climbs toward 84.5°F. Back out after three for the 6.3-mile paddling trail, off the water by six.
Day two reverses it: paddle early, walk the boardwalk in the afternoon, keep the last hour free for the platforms. On the four wet days an average October carries, the rain rarely owns the whole day, and only 0.5 day per October reaches a full inch. If the forecast turns overnight, move the paddle to first light and let the shower pass while you are under cover. Our Florida things-to-do guide has the indoor fallbacks.
Silver Springs in October vs September and November
| 1991-2020 normals | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 89.7°F | 84.5°F | 77.3°F |
| Average low | 73.1°F | 66.1°F | 57.1°F |
| Precipitation | 5.21 in | 2.62 in | 1.76 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 8.1 | 4.0 | 2.5 |
| Day-night spread | 16.6°F | 18.4°F | 20.2°F |
Read across and the three months move in one direction. Highs go 89.7°F, 84.5°F, 77.3°F, and lows 73.1°F, 66.1°F, 57.1°F. Rain halves from September’s 5.21 inches to October’s 2.62, then eases again to 1.76 inches. Wet days follow the same slope: 8.1, 4.0, 2.5. The one line that stays flat is the spring, holding its flow and its temperature while the air loses 12.4 degrees between September and November.
Shift four weeks earlier and you gain 5.2 degrees of afternoon warmth, then pay for it with 8.1 wet days and 5.21 inches of rain. Shift four weeks later and you gain the driest air of the three, 1.76 inches over 2.5 days, and lose the warm start: 57.1°F at the first platform means a jacket you then carry until sunset. October keeps the early hour comfortable and the afternoon mostly dry.
Is October a good time to visit Silver Springs?
Yes, for anyone whose two days are walking, paddling and looking: 84.5°F afternoons, 2.62 inches of rain and 11h30 of daylight make a strong hand. No, for anyone who booked with a swim in mind. The park’s own inventory records no designated swimming area, and no month on the calendar changes that. For a Florida trip built around getting into the water with something large and gentle, our manatee guide points at the winter.
If the answer is no, November is where to move. It brings 1.76 inches over 2.5 wet days, the least interrupted of the three months, with 77.3°F afternoons that suit a long walk better than they suit sitting still on a platform. The cost is the dawn, 57.1°F. And September only makes sense for travelers who want real heat and can absorb 8.1 wet days out of thirty.
Of these three months, only October pairs a dawn above 66°F with a month under three inches of rain.
The last word
Book the nights before anything else: ten cabins is the entire inventory, and October weekends all want the same ten. One thing worth carrying with you while you plan. Under Florida Statutes 373.802(5), Silver Springs belongs to a class the state calls Outstanding Florida Springs, covering every historic first-magnitude spring as determined by the Florida Geological Survey, plus six named by hand in the law. Then set the alarm for 7:28, take the boardwalk first, and let the 84.5-degree part of the day happen after lunch.
