NEGRIL VS OCHO RIOS · WEST COAST OR NORTH · THE DECISION
Two Jamaican bases, two completely different daily errands. Negril is seven miles of west-facing sand with a cliff-lined West End bolted onto the southern end, and the whole town turns to watch the water around six. Ocho Rios is the island’s excursion counter: a cruise pier in the middle of town, waterfalls in three directions, tour vans warming up by eight. They sit roughly three hours apart along the coast (est.). Below, which one earns your week, and when the correct answer is one of each.

THE MATCH AT A GLANCE · NEGRIL VS OCHO RIOS
Beach week with a sunset ritual attached: Negril. Waterfalls, river tubing and a base that runs on booked excursions: Ocho Rios. Seven nights or more: take both, west first.
NEGRIL = SEVEN MILE & THE WEST END · OCHO RIOS = FALLS & THE CRUISE PIER · ABOUT 3 HOURS APART (EST.)
What decides it: picture day four of your trip. Still on the same stretch of sand, book in hand, dinner within walking distance? Negril. Third waterfall of the week, wet shoes drying on the balcony rail? Ocho Rios.
Think twice before: booking Ocho Rios for a beach-only week. Its town beaches are pleasant and short, and on ship days the morning belongs to a few thousand visitors who leave by five.

Negril or Ocho Rios for a beach-first week?
Negril, comfortably. Seven Mile Beach is the rare Caribbean strand that lives up to its measurement: shallow, calm, walkable for an hour in one direction, with bars and small hotels strung along it. South of the roundabout, the West End cliffs swap sand for ladders into deep blue water and a sunset that the whole road stops for. One base, two moods, no vehicle required.
Ocho Rios answers with Turtle Beach and Mahogany Beach, both agreeable, both short, both a few minutes from the pier. That proximity is the catch. When a ship is in, the town beach and the craft market fill by mid-morning and empty again in the late afternoon, which is either an atmosphere or an annoyance depending on your temperament. Resort guests on the strips east and west of town sidestep the whole rhythm, as the Ocho Rios guide lays out property by property.
Negril or Ocho Rios for waterfalls and excursions?
Ocho Rios, by a distance no beach can close. The town is the trailhead for Dunn’s River Falls, whose ticket prices and opening hours (including the earlier start on ship days) sit on its own page, plus the Blue Hole at Island Gully, White River tubing, the Fern Gully drive and horseback rides that end in the sea. Book two of those and the week has already paid for the base.
Negril’s outings are fewer and slower: a catamaran along the cliffs, a boat to the reef, a long day south to the Black River morass and YS Falls. That southern route is genuinely good and genuinely far, and parts of the south coast are still reopening on their own timetable. Anyone driving it should know Jamaica keeps to the left, a detail the driving guide takes further than one line can.
Negril or Ocho Rios for families, couples and friend groups?
Families: Ocho Rios usually, and not only for the waterfalls. The big all-inclusives east of town were built around water parks and kids’ clubs, and the excursion menu keeps teenagers busy for five straight days. Families with small swimmers who want nothing but calm, waist-deep water still do better on Seven Mile, a split our family guide works through.
Couples: Negril, and the West End decides it. Adults-only cliff hotels, dinner tables hanging over the water, and a sunset that functions as a nightly appointment. The honeymoon file leans the same way.
Friend groups: a real split. Negril delivers the barefoot bar crawl along the sand; Ocho Rios delivers a shared van, a river, and a bar-hopping evening around the pier and Main Street. Loud beach week goes west, activity week stays north.
Cautious first-timers: either base works. The June 23, 2026 US advisory holds the country at Level 2 and names a short list of inland pockets, none of them on the resort strips, with the detail in the safety guide. Negril also came back fastest among the storm-hit parishes, with most of its rooms trading again by early 2026, and the recovery file keeps the coast-by-coast picture current.

How to have both Negril and Ocho Rios in one week
Seven nights dissolve the argument. Land at Montego Bay, run west for the beach half, then cross the north coast for the falls half and fly out from the same airport. That is the shape of our 7-day route, and the crossing is one booking, not two, once you read the transfer guide alongside the transport file.
The last word
Choose Negril when the week is meant to stay in one place: sand underfoot from breakfast, a cliff ladder in the afternoon, the sun going down behind the boats while somebody orders another round. Choose Ocho Rios when the trip wants a list, and when climbing a river in wet shoes with strangers holding your hand sounds like the best day of the vacation. The two are not rivals so much as different verbs.
Set the dates first with the month-by-month verdict, price the week in the cost guide, and see how both bases sit in the wider island picture in the country guide.
