Wekiwa Springs in October: Water Temperature, Rain Days and Parking

The USGS gauge at Wekiwa Springs was reading 75.6°F when it was last checked, on September 11, 2026, and it reads close to that on any day you care to pick. A spring does not have a season. The air above it does, and October is the month that air finally cooperates: the average high falls from 89.6°F in September to 84.7°F, and the rain total from 6.37 inches to 3.46.

Everything a Florida trip needs beyond the date lives elsewhere: where to sleep, what a week costs, how to move around the state. October’s own business is narrower and easier to measure: how warm the afternoons run, how often it rains, when the light goes, and whether the 325-space lot fills before you get there.

October puts 84.7°F afternoons and 5.3 wet days over a spring that stays at 75.6°F, which makes it the first month since spring when a hike and a swim fit comfortably in the same day.

Go for: swimming and paddling without September’s 6.37 inches of rain, 13.7 miles of trail at 84.7°F instead of 89.6°F, and water that holds 75.6°F whatever the sky is doing.

Think twice before: driving out on a warm Saturday with no second plan. The park has 325 parking spaces, and when the lot fills the gate closes.

Two thermometers are involved, and they sit 27 miles apart. The air figures are NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 monthly normals from station USW00012815, at Orlando International Airport, about 27 miles (44 km) from the spring, so read the normals below as regional air rather than a reading taken at the swimming area. The water figure comes from the USGS gauge, station 02234600, and it is one instantaneous reading of 75.6°F taken on September 11, 2026, not a monthly average.

NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals put October at an average high of 84.7°F, an average low of 66.2°F and 3.46 inches of rain for the month. Those are thirty-year averages from a single airport station, so any individual October will run warmer, cooler or wetter than the line. They tell you what to put in the bag. They do not tell you what Tuesday will do.

Measurable rain falls on 5.3 days in an average October, roughly one day in six, and only 0.9 day of the month brings an inch or more. Translated into a visit: four or five days get wet, at most one of them gets seriously wet, and a week here has better odds of a dry stretch than any week since April.

Between the average low and the average high sits an 18.5°F spread, and it lands at exactly the hour you are standing in a wet swimsuit. A towel dries slowly at 66°F. Carry a fleece or a hoodie for the first hour of the day and for the drive back after dark, and carry the same shorts you would have packed in July for everything between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

On October 15 the sun rises at 7:26 a.m. and sets at 6:56 p.m. local time, giving 11 hours and 31 minutes of light. That last figure sets the back end of the day: plan a paddle so you are off the water before 6:56, not arriving at the launch at five with a boat and an optimistic idea about dusk.

How warm is Wekiwa Springs in October?

Top and bottom of the month: 84.7°F by day, 66.2°F before dawn, an 18.5°F gap. September’s gap is narrower at 17.2°F because its nights barely cool (72.4°F), and November’s is wider at 20.1°F because its nights drop to 58.2°F. October is the month where the cool part arrives at night and stays out of the afternoon.

In clothing terms that means two outfits in one day. Long sleeves at the gate, and a hat and nothing much by mid-morning. Swimmers get the better half of the deal: entering 75.6°F water at 8 a.m. under 66°F air is a decision, entering it at 2 p.m. under 84.7°F air is a reward.

Freezing nights are a fair question in central Florida, and we cannot answer it with a number. Our normals carry the monthly average low of 66.2°F and no count of nights at or below 32°F, so we give no frost figure for October. Central Florida’s cold snaps belong to the far side of the dry season, and our statewide calendar takes that question.

How busy is Wekiwa Springs in October? Parking spaces, prices and booking

October sits on the hinge of Florida’s two seasons, with September’s 6.37 inches of rain behind it and November’s 1.79 ahead. On money, we have to be plain: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the Wekiwa corridor, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. Our trip-cost guide carries the budget question for the state as a whole.

The figure that decides a warm Saturday is not a rate. It is 325: the number of parking spaces the state counts at Wekiwa Springs State Park, and when the lot fills the gate closes. We could not verify how often that happens in October, and no attendance series reached us. What is certain is that everyone arrives by car, that Orlando is 27 miles away, and that arriving early costs nothing.

On lodging tax, we could not verify a rate for the county, so no percentage comes from us. A Florida hotel confirmation normally breaks out a state sales tax line and a county tourist-development line, and yours will show both before you pay. Beds in this corner of the state are Orlando beds, and our where-to-stay guide sorts them.

One outlay changes the month more than any other: a rented canoe, kayak or tube. The park counts a single launch and 15.9 miles of paddling trail above it, and the river is the only way to reach most of that water. We could not read a rental rate, so we quote none. Ask at the launch, and ask early on a weekend.

Things to do in Wekiwa Springs in October: swimming, paddling and the hiking trails

October is the first month since spring when the walk is not the toll you pay for the swim. September runs an average high of 89.6°F with 9.2 wet days; October runs 84.7°F with 5.3. Four fewer soaked afternoons and five degrees off the peak is the difference between a trail you tolerate and a trail you choose.

Counted by the state in its 2024 facilities inventory, Wekiwa Springs State Park holds 1 designated swimming area, 1 launch for canoes, kayaks and tubes, 15.9 miles of paddling trail, 13.7 miles of hiking trail, 1,435 feet of boardwalk and those 325 parking spaces. Rock Springs, named alongside Wekiwa in the same state statute, sits within the same spring system for anyone wanting a second day of water.

The water is the fixed point at 75.6°F. What October moves is the distance between the water and the air. An October afternoon averages 9.1°F warmer than the spring, a September afternoon 14.0°F warmer, a November afternoon only 2.7°F. That middle figure is the sweet spot: enough heat above the surface to make 75.6°F feel like relief, not enough to make the hike back a chore.

We will not tell you what any of it costs at the gate. Our sources carry no entrance fee, no opening hour and no manatee count for Wekiwa Springs: floridastateparks.org returns a 403 to automated reads, and the state’s manatee page renders only in a browser. Check the park’s own page the night before, or ask at the ranger station on the way in.

Wekiwa Springs in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light of October 15. Be in the entrance line early, because 325 spaces is the whole ceiling. Take the swimming area first while the air is still near 66°F and the 75.6°F water feels generous. Paddle from mid-morning, heading up the marked route and turning back before the 84.7°F part of the day. Walk the 1,435 feet of boardwalk after lunch, in shade. Be off the water before 6:56 p.m.

Day two belongs to the 13.7 miles of hiking trail: pick a loop rather than a mileage, and start at sunrise, 7:26 a.m. If the sky turns, the odds are on your side at 5.3 wet days a month and 0.9 day over an inch. Sit the hour out, swim in the rain (the spring does not care), or drive toward Orlando and spend it on something with a roof.

Wekiwa Springs in October vs September and November

Measure September October November
Average high 89.6°F 84.7°F 78.3°F
Average low 72.4°F 66.2°F 58.2°F
Rainfall 6.37 in 3.46 in 1.79 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 9.2 5.3 3.0
Spring water about 75.6°F about 75.6°F about 75.6°F

October takes 4.9°F off September’s average high and gives back 6.4°F over November’s. The nights move further: 6.2°F cooler than September, 8.0°F warmer than November. Rain does the heaviest lifting of all, dropping 2.91 inches and almost four wet days from September, then dropping another 1.67 inches into November. The bottom row never moves, in any month of any year.

Shift four weeks forward and you buy drier skies, 3.0 wet days against 5.3, at the cost of the afternoon that makes the spring inviting: November air runs just 2.7°F above the water. Shift four weeks back and you get warm evenings and a longer swim window, paid for with 6.37 inches of rain and 9.2 wet days. October is the version where both sides of the trade stay reasonable.

Is October a good time to visit Wekiwa Springs?

Yes, and emphatically so for anyone who wants water and trail in the same twenty-four hours. Swimmers, paddlers and families with a cooler get a 75.6°F basin under an 84.7°F sky and a one-in-six chance of measurable rain on a given day. The traveler this month does not suit is the one hoping for cool-weather hiking: 84.7°F in the afternoon is still Florida heat.

If that is you, take November. Highs of 78.3°F, lows of 58.2°F, 1.79 inches of rain and 3.0 wet days make the 13.7 miles of trail a different proposition entirely. The trade is honest: the spring will feel colder on the way in, because the air above it has stopped doing the work.

No other month puts a 9.1°F cushion between the air and the water with fewer than six wet days in it.

The last word

Florida named this spring by hand. Statute 373.802(5) defines an Outstanding Florida Spring as every historic first-magnitude spring plus six written into the law individually: De Leon, Peacock, Poe, Rock Springs, Wekiwa and Gemini. Protection came without waiting for it to be big enough. The decision left to you is smaller and simpler: pick a weekday, leave Orlando before the 325 spaces go, and swim before the boats get on the water.
