Nine rain days. That is Kingston’s July in the 1991–2020 record, alongside 51 mm of rain for the entire month, and it explains why midsummer here is not the washout the calendar implies. The island splits down its spine: Montego Bay still counts 22 rain days and 131 mm on the north coast, while Kingston, in the lee of the mountains, sits in a genuinely dry pocket. Beyond that split, July delivers an 85°F sea, sunsets holding near 6:45pm from the first of the month to the last, and Reggae Sumfest, whose 2026 edition ran on July 18 at Plantation Cove in St. Ann (the 2027 dates were unannounced at press time). Reggae Sumfest dates: the 2026 edition, and where 2027 stands

Reggae Sumfest, the island’s flagship music festival, ran a single-night 2026 edition on July 18 at Plantation Cove in St. Ann, and until the 2027 dates land on reggaesumfest.com, treat both the date and the venue as open questions. The 2026 edition put pressure on rooms around Ocho Rios rather than Montego Bay for those dates, and it puts a great many cars on the coast road well after midnight. Jamaica drives on the left, and the US advisory tells its own staff to skip intercity night driving, which is a sensible rule for visitors as well. Arrange the ride there and back through your hotel or a licensed driver rather than improvising at midnight.

July inside the hurricane season: before the August-to-October peak

Two separate things get folded together here. Climatology places July inside the Atlantic season, which runs June 1 to November 30, but ahead of the stretch NOAA flags as busiest, August through October. An active alert is a different animal entirely: one system, one week, tracked in real time by the National Hurricane Center. Nobody can tell you in advance what your dates will do. What the record does say is that a July day with nothing on the map is a beach day with a late-afternoon shower up north, and often no rain at all on the south plain.

July prices in Jamaica: summer demand outside the mid-December high season

Two calendars pull in opposite directions this month. The published high season runs mid-December to mid-April, so July sits outside it on the rate sheet, while American school holidays push demand back up at all-inclusives with kids’ programs (est.). July weather in Jamaica: temperatures and rain days, coast by coast

1991–2020 normals (ERA5) for the three reference cities. A rain day means the reanalysis logs at least 1 mm on the grid cell, not a day lost at the beach. The Kingston line is the one to sit with: 51 mm across the whole month, under half what Port Antonio collects, because the Blue Mountains wring the northeast trades dry before they reach the southern plain. North-coast showers in July come in hot and heavy, most often late afternoon, and they usually clear fast.

July in Jamaica: the 85°F sea, Dunn’s River at opening and evenings to 6:45pm

An 85°F sea and long light. Water at that temperature means no entry gasp and no exit shiver, which matters when small children are the ones deciding how long the swim lasts. Sunset moves barely at all across the month, from about 6:47pm on the 1st to 6:42pm on the 31st in Kingston, so an early snorkel and a 7pm dinner sit comfortably in the same day. Picking a coast is the real decision: Montego Bay and Negril covers the swimming.

Why the month reads Good. Twenty-two north-coast rain days sounds heavy until you set it against May in the same ERA5 series, where the count runs higher, which is why our 12-month verdict files July as a drier midsummer pocket. Build the week accordingly: water and hills in the morning, shade or a long lunch when the cloud stacks up inland, then the west-facing sand at Negril for the last hour of light.

July asks less of your nerves than October does and more of your booking discipline than February. The storm season is open but short of its peak, the Kingston side of the island is dry at nine rain days, and the sea reads 85°F from Negril round to Port Antonio.
