SOUTH COAST, JAMAICA · MARCH · 17.88° N
March on Jamaica’s South Coast averages 85.1°F by day and 73.6°F before dawn, with 1.11 inches of rain across the whole month and a sea running 82.1°F. The grid cell behind those figures sits over Treasure Beach, in Saint Elizabeth, the driest parish in Jamaica, and that is the main reason this coast reads differently from the north shore in the same week.
The real choice most travelers are making is March against April. Four weeks later the water is 1.7°F warmer and the measurable rain days go from 2.6 to 5.3. For the coast itself, its beaches and bases, see the South Coast guide, and for the ride in from the airport, our transfers guide.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SOUTH COAST · MARCH
March delivers 85.1°F afternoons, 2.6 measurable rain days and an 82.1°F sea: warmer water than February, with half of April’s rain days.
HIGH 85.1°F · LOW 73.6°F · 1.11 IN OF RAIN · SEA 82.1°F · 12H05 OF DAYLIGHT ON MAR 15
Go for: afternoons at 85.1°F, water at 82.1°F, boat mornings off Parottee Point, and an average March with 0.0 days of inch-plus rain.
Think twice before: expecting April’s 83.8°F water in March, or reading north-coast airport normals for this coast: every figure here comes from a model grid cell over Treasure Beach.

South Coast weather in March: average highs, lows and rain days
| March on the South Coast | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 85.1°F (29.5°C) |
| Average low | 73.6°F (23.1°C) |
| Precipitation, monthly total | 1.11 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 2.6 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.0 |
| Sea surface (2015–2024) | 82.1°F |
| Daylight, March 15 | 12 h 05 |
Those normals come from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis for 1991–2020, computed for the grid cell at 17.88° N, 77.76° W. Every figure here is model output for that cell rather than a thermometer reading at an airport, and the two are not interchangeable. The cell sits over Treasure Beach, in Saint Elizabeth, so it describes the dry southern strip. A normal taken at Montego Bay would describe a wetter coast entirely. Read 85.1°F and 73.6°F as the shape of a typical March along this stretch.
Rain lands on 2.6 days at 0.10 inch or more, roughly one day in twelve. No day in the average record reaches a full inch, so the standard March wetting is a shower that passes over a morning. The monthly total, 1.11 inches, sits between February’s 0.68 and April’s 1.75. On a ten-day stay that works out at about one gray opening, and it rarely costs the whole day.
Day and night are 11.5°F apart, so a 73.6°F low never calls for a coat. It does call for one long-sleeve layer if you are on the water before sunrise or in an open vehicle after dark. The rest of the bag is sun kit: the afternoon holds 85.1°F with the sea only 3°F cooler, so shade does more work than warmth. Our packing list covers the detail.
March 15 brings 12 hours 05 minutes of daylight, with the sun up at 6:17 am and down at 6:22 pm local time, converted from 11:17 and 23:22 UTC. Usable light fades within about half an hour of sunset (est.). On rural, largely unlit roads that puts the last sensible departure of the day near 5:30 pm, which is why the long drive belongs in the morning. Road detail sits in driving in Jamaica.
Can you swim on the South Coast in March? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off this coast averages 82.1°F in March, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015–2024. One caveat rides with that number: it averages the warmest point of each day, so it runs a shade above a full 24-hour mean. A 7 am swim sits under 82.1°F; a late-afternoon one sits at or above it. February comes in at 81.2°F, April at 83.8°F, all three measured the same way.
Water in the low 80s does not shock on entry and does not push you out after twenty minutes. An hour of snorkeling needs no thermal layer, though a rash guard still helps against the sun at 12 hours of daylight. Children go in and out all afternoon at this temperature without complaint. The 0.9°F step up from February is hard to feel by hand; the 1.7°F step up to April is closer to noticeable.
We found no wind or swell series for the South Coast in our sources, so no figure for either appears here and we will not guess at one. Boat operators work shallow water off Parottee Point and out of Black River, and their morning call decides the trip. What our data does cover is rain, and 2.6 measurable days in an average March leaves most mornings open.
How busy is the South Coast in March? Crowds, prices and booking ahead
We found no occupancy series and no room-rate series for this coast, so we crown no month cheapest and none busiest. What we can date is the weather, and March sits between February’s 0.68 inches and April’s 1.75. For where Jamaica’s demand runs across the year, see the month-by-month verdict. For what a week costs end to end, what a Jamaica trip costs carries the budget lines.
Lead time follows the rate curve, and we could not read that curve, so we give no number of weeks. A comparative move works instead: ask a property for its March nights against its February and April nights, then weigh the difference against what the weather actually changes, which is 1.1 rain days from February to March and 2.7 more from March to April. If the March premium outruns that gap, move the dates.
We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging-tax rate or the tax line that appears on South Coast bills, so no percentage appears here. Ask for the all-in nightly figure in writing before a deposit leaves your account, and confirm whether the quoted rate already includes it. Know before you go collects the rest of the paperwork.
One upgrade genuinely changes a March week: a room within walking distance of the water. With sunset at 6:22 pm and the afternoon holding 85.1°F, the usable day falls into an early half and a late half, and both of them end at the sea. A base fifteen minutes inland adds two night drives a day on unlit roads. The view and the air conditioning at a 73.6°F low matter less this month than the walk.
Things to do on the South Coast in March

With 2.6 measurable rain days and none reaching an inch, March is the month for water you have to be ferried to. April’s record doubles those days to 5.3, which is where a boat morning starts getting rescheduled. February is drier still at 1.5 days, but its 81.2°F water is the coolest of the three. March holds the middle position on both counts, and boat trips are where that shows.
The named targets along this coast: the Black River for a mangrove boat trip, Floyd’s Pelican Bar standing on a sandbar off Parottee Point, YS Falls inland from Middle Quarters, Lovers Leap above the cliffs at Southfield, and the Appleton Estate distillery up the Nassau valley. We could not verify current admission prices, opening hours or closing days for any of them, so none are printed here. Call the operator the week you travel.
What March changes at those places is the air around them, not the water in them. We hold no water-temperature reading for the falls or the river, so the only water figure we can give is the sea’s 82.1°F. Air moves just 1.3°F between March and April, which nobody feels standing on a boat. Rain days move from 2.6 to 5.3, and that is the difference between a trip that runs and one that slides to tomorrow.
On free things, our cards are on the table: we could not verify entry arrangements or fees for the beaches themselves, and we found no free-entry day at any paid site in March, so we promise none. The sunset at 6:22 pm and the shoreline walk before it are the two items we can vouch for at no cost.
The South Coast in March: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the clock. Up at 6:17 am with the sunrise, coffee outside while the air is still near 73.6°F. On the water at Black River by 8, back on land before 11:30. Lunch and the flat middle of the afternoon in shade, because 85.1°F is the day’s ceiling and it holds from roughly 1 to 4. Swim at 4:30, when the sea is at the warm end of its 82.1°F average. Sunset at 6:22 pm, dinner after dark.
Day two goes inland early: YS Falls or Appleton before noon, the coast road back with light to spare, a second swim around five. If the morning opens gray, shift rather than cancel, since an average March records no day reaching an inch. Put the inland drive after lunch and the swim first. Across a seven-night stay the record puts only about 0.6 of a measurable rain day in your window anyway.
The South Coast in March vs February and April
| Measure | February | March | April |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 84.7°F | 85.1°F | 86.4°F |
| Average low | 73.0°F | 73.6°F | 75.2°F |
| Precipitation | 0.68 in | 1.11 in | 1.75 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 1.5 | 2.6 | 5.3 |
| Sea surface | 81.2°F | 82.1°F | 83.8°F |
Air barely moves across the three months: 84.7°F, 85.1°F, 86.4°F, a spread of 1.7°F between the coolest and the warmest. Rain moves a great deal. February records 1.5 measurable days and 0.68 inches, March 2.6 days and 1.11, April 5.3 days and 1.75. The sea climbs steadily, 81.2°F to 82.1 to 83.8, those three drawn from the marine API’s daily maxima over 2015–2024 rather than the 1991–2020 air normals.
Shift four weeks earlier and you drop 1.1 rain days and give up 0.9°F of water. Shift four weeks later and you gain the warmest sea of the three at 83.8°F while the rain days double. Both alternatives carry the same table on their own page: February and April.
Is March a good time to visit the South Coast?
Yes for anyone who wants warm water with a low chance of losing a day: an 82.1°F sea, 2.6 measurable rain days, 12 hours 05 minutes of light on the 15th. No for two groups. Swimmers chasing the warmest possible water should wait for April and its 83.8°F. Travelers who want the driest possible week should come in February, at 0.68 inches and 1.5 measurable days.
If the answer is no, February is the better swap for most people. It costs 0.9°F of sea temperature and 0.6°F of afternoon air, and it records 1.1 fewer measurable rain days. April suits swimmers alone: the water gains 1.7°F, the rain days climb from 2.6 to 5.3, and that trade pays off only when the sea is the reason for the trip.
Within this three-month window, only March pairs an 82°F sea with fewer than three measurable rain days: February is cooler in the water, April is wetter on land.
The last word
Between neighboring weeks, take the earlier one: the step from February to March adds 1.1 rain days, the step from March to April adds 2.7 more on top. Book the Black River morning for your first full day rather than your last, so a shower has somewhere to move to, and confirm the operator’s hours yourself, since we could not verify them. Sunset at 6:22 pm mid-month puts dinner after dark either way.
