The South Coast in July: Weather, Sea Temperature and Rain Days Around Treasure Beach

July hands Jamaica’s South Coast its hottest afternoons and, within the summer, its smallest rain total: an average high of 89.5°F, an average low of 78.8°F, and 1.85 inches of rain spread over the month. The sea off the coast averages 85.8°F. For American families flying down inside the school break, that combination is the whole reason the month sells.

What July costs you is cool: the nights sit near 79°F and stay there. Choosing between this coast and the north shore is a different question, and our year-round verdict for Jamaica takes it on. Below, the numbers that belong to the date: rain days, daylight, water temperature, and how the same week reads four weeks earlier or later.

July gives this coast the driest month of the June-to-August trio and water at 85.8°F, in exchange for nights that never really cool down.

Go for: swimming from first light to a 6:51 p.m. sunset, river and sandbar boat trips, and the lowest rainfall of the three summer months.

Think twice before: booking a July walking trip or a room without cooling: the average low is 78.8°F, which is a warm night by any American standard.

Every figure here comes from the grid cell at 17.8767° N, 77.7588° W, which sits over Treasure Beach in Saint Elizabeth, the driest parish in Jamaica. That dryness is precisely what separates this coast from the north shore, so read the normals below as Treasure Beach’s rather than as the island’s.

The 89.5°F high and 78.8°F low are 1991-2020 normals from the Open-Meteo / ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis, computed for a grid cell, not read off an airport thermometer. That distinction matters: a reanalysis models the air over roughly 10 square miles, while a station measures one box in one field. Expect the shape of the month to be right and any single afternoon to argue with it.

Rain comes in small installments. An average July logs 5.7 days with at least 0.10 inch, which is measurable rain roughly one day in five, and the month’s whole total is 1.85 inches. In practice that reads as a short heavy burst, a wet road, and a beach that is usable again before you have finished lunch, rather than a day written off.

Between afternoon and dawn the thermometer moves only 10.7°F, from 89.5 down to 78.8. Nothing in that spread calls for a sweater or long trousers after dark, so the suitcase argument is about sun and salt instead: a hat, a second swimsuit that can dry overnight in humid air, and reef-safe sunscreen. Our packing list carries the full version.

On July 15 the coast gets 13 hours 08 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 5:43 a.m. and sunset at 6:51 p.m. local time, converted from the 10:43 and 23:51 UTC readings. Tropical dusk is brief, so a boat that leaves a sandbar at 6:30 p.m. is coming back in the dark, and a driver on unlit rural roads should be off them by then. Driving in Jamaica explains why.

Can you swim on the South Coast in July? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off the coast averages 85.8°F in July, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. One caveat travels with that number: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it describes the warmest point of an average day and runs a shade above a true 24-hour mean. A 6 a.m. swim is cooler than the figure suggests, though not by much.

Put beside the air, 85.8°F is 7.0°F warmer than the average July night low and 3.7°F below the afternoon high. Nobody stands knee-deep bargaining with water like that, and nobody gets chilled out of it either. Hour-long swims are normal, small children last until they are bored rather than cold, and snorkeling needs no wetsuit at any point in the month.

On wind and swell we have nothing to offer: no verified July wind or wave series for this stretch of coast reached us, so we publish no figure and no claim about calm mornings. Sea state is also what the hurricane calendar acts on, and the month-by-month risk sits in our hurricane season guide rather than in a normals table.

How busy is the South Coast in July? Crowds, prices and the summer calendar

July is summer vacation on the American and British calendars, and that is the only part of the month’s demand we can date with confidence. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the South Coast, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. July also falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which is a calendar fact rather than a forecast, and the dates belong to the storm page.

We could not verify booking-window data for this coast either, so treat any “book eleven weeks ahead” number, ours included, as guesswork. The order of operations is the useful part: flights from the US first, because summer seats set the shape of the trip, then the room for the nights you have chosen, then the airport transfer, which has to be arranged in advance rather than hailed on arrival.

On the room tax, we could not verify Jamaica’s current rate or how it applies to small guesthouses, so no percentage appears here. Budget for a line you cannot see on the nightly rate, and use our trip-cost breakdown for the rest of the arithmetic.

If one line of the budget deserves the upgrade in July, it is the bedroom. With the average low at 78.8°F and humidity to match, working air conditioning or at least a strong ceiling fan and cross-ventilation is what separates a slept night from a sticky one. Paying more for a bigger terrace changes nothing about the month. Paying more for cooling changes every night of it.

Things to do on the South Coast in July

What July offers that its neighbors do not is dry afternoons stacked against long light. Its 1.85 inches of rain undercut August’s 2.81, and 13 hours 08 minutes of daylight on the 15th leaves room for a river trip in the morning and a second outing after five. Plans that need a settled sky and a boat get more attempts this month than in any other summer week.

The fixtures are close together. Treasure Beach is a run of coves, Billy’s Bay, Frenchman’s Bay, Calabash Bay and Great Bay, each with dark sand and fishing pirogues. Black River sends boats up into the Great Morass for crocodiles and mangrove; the stilt bar off Parottee Point stands on a sandbar reached only by water; YS Falls and the Appleton Estate sit inland, and Lovers’ Leap looks down from the cliff.

July changes the air around these places far more than the water inside them. We hold no water-temperature reading for the river or the falls, and inland freshwater moves little across a year in any case. The 89.5°F afternoon is what shifts: shade, timing and drinking water decide how a falls visit goes, and a noon crocodile trip on open water is a different experience from a nine o’clock one.

The free half of July is the shoreline and the light. We found no gate or ticket on the Treasure Beach coves, sunset at 6:51 p.m. costs nothing, and the walk between two bays at that hour is the outing most visitors remember. Our island-wide list covers what is worth paying for elsewhere.

The South Coast in July: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts before the heat does. Sunrise on July 15 is 5:43 a.m., and a 7 o’clock swim meets water averaging 85.8°F, which asks nothing of you. Give the rest of the morning to a Black River boat trip while the air is still below its 89.5°F peak. Eat and stay in shade from noon to three, the stretch of a July day nobody wins. The coves refill around five, and the light holds until 6:51 p.m.

Day two goes either inland to YS Falls or out to the sandbar off Parottee Point, with Lovers’ Leap and the Appleton Estate as the drive-based alternative. If the sky turns, the numbers argue for shifting rather than canceling: an average July counts 5.7 days with 0.10 inch or more, and those bursts pass. Boat plans hinge on sea state rather than on a shower, so call the operator the morning you go and keep the second slot open.

The South Coast in July vs June and August

Measure June July August
Average high 88.2°F 89.5°F 89.2°F
Average low 78.5°F 78.8°F 78.9°F
Monthly rainfall 2.04 in 1.85 in 2.81 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 5.3 5.7 8.0
Sea surface 85.6°F 85.8°F 87.3°F

July runs the warmest afternoons of the three, 1.3°F above June and 0.3°F above August, and the driest total, 1.85 inches against 2.04 in June and 2.81 in August. The rain-day counts separate them more sharply than the totals do: 5.3 days in June, 5.7 in July, then a jump to 8.0 in August. Nights barely move at all, from 78.5°F to 78.9°F across twelve weeks.

Shift back four weeks and you trade 0.4 rain days for 0.19 inch more rain, with the sea 0.2°F cooler and afternoons 1.3°F gentler, which our June page lays out. Shift forward and August buys the warmest water of the trio at 87.3°F, then charges nearly a full inch more rain and 2.3 extra wet days for it, on top of a storm calendar that thickens as summer goes on.

Is July a good time to visit the South Coast?

For a water trip, yes without hesitation. Swimming at 85.8°F, boat days that only 5.7 rain days a month interrupt, and 13 hours of light make July the easiest summer month to fill here. For anyone planning midday walking, a hiking leg in the Blue Mountains, or nights cool enough to sleep without cooling, the same figures read as a warning.

If that second description fits, June is the nearer fix than August: 88.2°F afternoons, 5.3 rain days and only 0.2°F less warmth in the sea. Looking further out means leaving the summer window altogether, and the full twelve-month comparison, storm risk included, belongs to our best-time-to-visit guide rather than to three columns of normals.

Of the three summer months, only July pairs the lowest rainfall, 1.85 inches, with daylight still at 13 hours 08 minutes in the middle of the month.

The last word

Book the cooled room and plan your swimming around the ends of the day, and July on this coast behaves. One figure we have kept back makes the case better than the rest: in an average July, not a single day reaches an inch of rain, against a 5.7-day count of measurable showers. Nobody here is losing a vacation day to weather, though plenty lose an hour of it to the two o’clock sun.
