The South Coast in April: Weather, Sea Temperature and Rain Days

April on Jamaica’s South Coast averages 86.4°F by day and 75.2°F at night, and the whole month collects 1.75 inches of rain. The sea off the coves reads 83.8°F. Those four figures answer most of what a traveler holding April dates wants to know before booking flights.

What April gives you is the dry half of the year still holding: measurable rain on 5.3 days, no day at an inch or more in an average year, and 12 hours 36 minutes of daylight by mid-month. What it takes away is the cooler night air of February and the cheapest week of the winter, if such a week exists on this coast. Where to sleep, how many nights and how to reach Treasure Beach from the airport belong to the South Coast guide and our transfers page.

April keeps the South Coast’s dry-season pattern intact: hot afternoons, warm nights, a sea at 83.8°F and rain on about one day in six.

Go for: boat mornings on the Black River, long swims at 83.8°F, and inland drives that land dry four times out of five.

Think twice before: planning a midday hike or a noon-to-two beach stretch: highs average 86.4°F and shade on this coast is your own problem to solve.

April’s rain total of 1.75 inches is well under half of May’s 3.91, and that single gap settles most April-versus-May arguments for this coast. For the country-wide view of when to come, our best-time page runs all twelve months.

Every figure here comes from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis, 1991-2020 normals computed on the grid cell at 17.8767N, 77.7588W. That cell sits over Treasure Beach, in Saint Elizabeth. It is a model reconstruction of the atmosphere rather than a thermometer reading from an airport station, and the difference matters enough to name. Saint Elizabeth is also the driest parish in Jamaica, so the normals below describe this coast and not the north shore around Ocho Rios.

Rain reaches 0.10 inch on 5.3 days in an average April, roughly one day in six, and an average April posts no day at all at an inch or more. Spread 1.75 inches across those days and each wet one carries about a third of an inch. A rainy April day on this coast still hands you most of its hours dry, and the plan that survives it is the one where lunch happens under a roof.

The gap between 86.4°F and 75.2°F is 11.2 degrees, which is small enough that nothing in the bag needs to be warm. Nights hold at swimming-pool temperature, so a fan, a breeze or air conditioning decides how you sleep. Pack for glare and salt instead: a hat that survives a boat, reef-safe sunscreen and a long-sleeve shirt for the open water. Our packing list runs the full version.

On April 15 the sun rises at 5:52 am and sets at 6:28 pm local time, Jamaica holding UTC-5 all year, for 12 hours 36 minutes of daylight. Tropical dusk is short, so 6:30 pm is dinner time rather than driving time. Anyone planning to move between towns after dark should read the driving page first.

Can you swim on the South Coast in April? Sea temperature and wind

The sea surface off this coast averages 83.8°F in April. That number is the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024 from the Open-Meteo Marine API, so it runs a shade warmer than a round-the-clock average would. Treat it as the afternoon reading rather than the 6 am one.

In practice, nobody stands at the waterline negotiating with the temperature. At 83.8°F you walk in and keep going, an hour of snorkeling needs no wetsuit, and small children last as long as their parents do. March water reads 82.1°F and May 85.3°F, so April sits comfortably between them and the difference is felt more in the first ten seconds than in the next ninety minutes.

We found no wind or swell series for this stretch of coast, so we quote no figures for either. What we can date is the light: with sunset at 6:28 pm, water time works best before 5 pm, and boat operators on this coast run their trips to the same clock.

How busy is the South Coast in April? Crowds, prices and the lodging tax

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for the South Coast, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What is dated is the weather calendar: April closes the drier stretch of the year here, May triples the rain to 3.91 inches, and the storm calendar that follows is laid out on our hurricane-season page. For what a week actually costs, the trip-cost guide does the arithmetic.

Booking lead times for the small guesthouses around Treasure Beach are not something we could verify, so no number of weeks comes from us. One calendar quirk does deserve your attention: Easter falls in April some years and in March others, and it moves demand with it, so check your own dates against the holiday before you lock flights. Fares and routes from the US are covered on the flights page.

We could not verify Jamaica’s lodging-tax rate, so no percentage appears from us. Ask the property directly whether the nightly figure they quote already carries tax and service before you send a deposit, and get the answer in writing.

Paying more changes exactly one thing in April: the night. With lows averaging 75.2°F, a room with working air conditioning or a real cross breeze off the water is the upgrade that earns money back in sleep. Beyond that, a rental car opens the whole coast, and our getting-around guide weighs it against route taxis.

Things to do on the South Coast in April

April buys you a full day outdoors with decent odds. Rain reaches 0.10 inch on 5.3 days against 10.6 in May, so a boat morning, an inland drive and a late swim can share one date without a backup plan. That is the month’s advantage over anything from May onward, and it is the reason April dates suit travelers who only have three or four nights to spend.

The shortlist is short and it is all within driving distance: the fishing coves at Treasure Beach, the mangrove boat trips out of Black River, the cascades and rope swing at YS Falls, the sandbar bar off Parottee, the cliff at Lovers’ Leap, and the rum estate at Appleton inland. We could not verify current admission prices or opening hours for any of them, so none appear here. Confirm with the operator when you book, and see our national things-to-do guide for how they rank against the north coast.

Across March, April and May the sea moves 3.2 degrees, from 82.1°F to 85.3°F, while the rain total more than triples. So what April changes at these places is the odds of a wet afternoon rather than the temperature of anything you swim in. The river runs, the falls fall and the sea stays swimmable in all three months; only the sky votes differently.

We could not verify any fee-free day at the paid sites, so we name none. What costs nothing in April is the shoreline itself and the 12 hours 36 minutes of daylight on the 15th to walk it, plus a sunset at 6:28 pm that arrives early enough to leave a full evening after it.

The South Coast in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts with the sun at 5:52 am. Be on the sand by 6:30 while the air is nearer 75°F than 86°F, then take a mid-morning boat out of Black River before the heat peaks. Eat indoors between noon and two, when the 86.4°F average does its worst. Swim at four in 83.8°F water, and be at a table by 6:28 pm, because the light on this coast goes quickly once the sun touches the horizon.

Day two goes inland: YS Falls in the morning, Appleton or Lovers’ Leap after lunch, back at the coast for the last swim. If one of April’s 5.3 wet days lands on you, swap the order rather than the plan, since an average April produces no full inch of rain in a day and the falls care very little either way. A rum tour and a long lunch absorb a shower without anyone noticing.

The South Coast in April vs March and May

Measure March April May
Average high 85.1°F 86.4°F 86.8°F
Average low 73.6°F 75.2°F 77.0°F
Precipitation 1.11 in 1.75 in 3.91 in
Days with 0.10 in or more 2.6 5.3 10.6
Sea surface (daily maxima) 82.1°F 83.8°F 85.3°F

Air temperature barely separates the three months: 1.7 degrees of high from March to May, and 3.4 degrees of low. Rain does all the separating. March runs 1.11 inches over 2.6 measurable days, April 1.75 over 5.3, May 3.91 over 10.6. The sea climbs steadily through the same stretch, 82.1°F to 85.3°F, on the Marine API’s 2015-2024 average of daily maxima.

Shift four weeks back to March and you gain the driest conditions of the three, with rainy days cut in half, and give up 1.7°F of sea warmth and slightly shorter days. Shift four weeks forward to May and you gain the warmest water of the three and the season’s greener landscape, and you accept double April’s wet days plus nights that no longer drop below 77.0°F.

Is April a good time to visit the South Coast?

Yes, for anyone whose trip depends on water and daylight. A sea at 83.8°F, rain on roughly one day in six and more than twelve and a half hours of light make April one of the safest bets on this coast for a short stay. It works less well for travelers who cannot tolerate warm nights, since 75.2°F is the average low, not the exception, and for anyone hoping the calendar will discount their room.

If that describes you, take March instead. It cuts measurable rain days from 5.3 to 2.6, drops the average low to 73.6°F, and costs you 1.7 degrees of sea temperature that almost nobody notices once they are in the water. Sleepers win, swimmers break even.

What April alone offers is the last month on this coast where under two inches of rain and water above 83°F arrive together.

The last word

Book April here and the decision that matters is the room, because the weather has already made up its mind: run the arithmetic on 1.75 inches over 5.3 wet days and each one carries about a third of an inch, which is a passing shower on a hot afternoon. Spend the money on a bed with air conditioning or a real breeze, spend the mornings on the water before 10 am, and keep a rum tour in the back pocket for the one day the sky opens. Then plan the next stop with the seven-day route.
