JAMAICA · SOUTH COAST · JANUARY · 17.88° N
January gives Jamaica’s South Coast a high of 84.4°F, a low of 73.2°F and 0.52 inches of rain for the entire month. The sea off the coast runs 82.1°F. Those four numbers cover most of what a date-driven decision needs, and the rain figure is the one that separates this coast from the rest of the island.
What the month takes back is water warmth and daylight. December’s sea reads 84.0°F, nearly two degrees above January, and on January 15 the sun is up for 11 hours 13 minutes, setting at 5:56 pm local. If you are still weighing the whole calendar rather than this one month, our year-round verdict handles that argument.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SOUTH COAST · JANUARY
January is the driest of the three winter months on this coast, with a sea still above 82°F and a sunset before six.
HIGH 84.4°F · LOW 73.2°F · 0.52 IN OF RAIN · SEA 82.1°F · DAYLIGHT 11H13M
Go for: dry ground for boat trips and unpaved lanes, warm swimming at 82.1°F, and nights that drop to 73.2°F instead of staying sticky.
Think twice before: counting on long evenings or on the warmest water of the winter: the sun is gone at 5:56 pm and December’s sea is 1.9°F warmer.

One scope note before the numbers: every figure here comes from a grid cell centered on Treasure Beach, in Saint Elizabeth. The parish is the driest in Jamaica, and that is exactly what makes this coast behave unlike the north shore. Where to sleep, how to get in from the airports and what a week costs belong to the lodging guide, the transfer guide and the cost page.
South Coast weather in January: average highs, lows and rain days
| January measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 84.4°F |
| Average low | 73.2°F |
| Total precipitation | 0.52 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 1.3 |
| Days with 1 in or more | 0.0 |
| Daylight, Jan 15 | 11h 13m |
| Sunrise / sunset, Jan 15 | 6:43 am / 5:56 pm local |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 82.1°F |
Those normals come from the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis served by Open-Meteo, averaged over 1991-2020 for the cell at 17.88° N, 77.76° W. That is a modeled grid cell over Treasure Beach, not a thermometer at an airport, and the two are not interchangeable: on a Caribbean overnight low, a station record and a reanalysis can sit a couple of degrees apart. Read 73.2°F as the shape of a January night rather than a reading you could check against a porch gauge.
In an average January, 1.3 days record at least a tenth of an inch of rain. That works out to measurable rain roughly one day in twenty-four, and the whole month’s 0.52 inches arrives inside that day and a bit. The planning unit here is a single wet morning, not a wet week, and the odds favor a trip where nothing in your itinerary gets moved at all.
Between the 84.4°F afternoon and the 73.2°F small hours sits an 11.2-degree swing. Nobody needs a coat for it, but an open-sided boat at 7 am and a table outside after dark both feel cooler than the daytime number suggests. One long-sleeve layer and something for wind on the water covers it, and the packing list handles the rest of the bag.
Daylight on January 15 runs 11 hours 13 minutes, sunrise at 6:43 am and sunset at 5:56 pm local. Two practical consequences: mornings start genuinely early, and any drive on the coast road wants to be finished before six rather than after. Our driving guide explains why the night leg is the one to avoid on this side of the island.
Can you swim on the South Coast in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea surface off the South Coast averages 82.1°F in January, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. One qualifier belongs with that number: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. A swim at seven in the morning happens under 82.1°F, a swim at three in the afternoon closer to it.
For a swimmer, 82 degrees is the range where nobody stands on the sand negotiating with the first wave. You go in, you stay in, and you come out into 84.4°F air, so the exit costs nothing either. Set against December’s 84.0°F, January is 1.9 degrees cooler, and that gap shows up in the first thirty seconds rather than the first hour.
On wind and swell we have to stop short. Our sources carry no wave-height or wind series for this coast in January, so we publish no figure and no claim about calm mornings. Boat runs out to the sandbar and up the Black River are called by the operator on the day, and the useful move is to ask the evening before rather than assume a season-wide rule.
How busy is the South Coast in January? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
January falls inside the northern-winter window when most visitors reach Jamaica, and that much is a calendar fact. What it costs is another matter: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate table for the South Coast, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. Anything we have actually priced for a Jamaica trip sits in the cost breakdown.
The South Coast books differently from the resort strips because it runs on small guesthouses and villas rather than thousand-room properties, so a single popular place fills without the destination feeling full. We could not verify a lead time for Treasure Beach bookings, so we give no number of weeks. Flights and the long inland leg from Montego Bay or Kingston are the parts to lock first, and the flights page covers the US routes.
On the room tax, we have nothing verified. No lodging-tax rate was confirmed by our sources, so this page quotes no percentage rather than repeating a figure we cannot stand behind. Ask the property to state the total including tax and service before you send a deposit.
If one line of the budget deserves the upgrade in January, it is the ground transfer rather than the room. The coast road eats daylight, sunset lands at 5:56 pm, and a private car that leaves the airport early converts a lost arrival day into a swim at 82.1°F on day one. That is our judgment, not a priced comparison.
Things to do on the South Coast in January

With 0.52 inches spread over about 1.3 wet days, January is the month when the unpaved lanes behind the bays stay firm and a river trip is not fighting runoff. It also sits well outside the Atlantic hurricane season, which shapes the late-summer calendar on this island (the storm-season page has the dates). Conditions since the last storm season are tracked separately in our recovery update.
The fixtures are close together: the bays at Treasure Beach itself, boat safaris up the Black River, the terraced falls at YS, Floyd’s Pelican Bar out on its sandbar, the cliff view at Lovers’ Leap and the Appleton Estate rum tour inland. We did not verify current admission prices or opening hours for any of them, so no fare appears here. Confirm each operator directly when you book, especially the boat runs.
What the month changes is the air, not the water inland. A river fed from the hills reads much the same in July as in January, while the air above it moves with the season, and in January that air averages 84.4°F. At sea the reading does shift: 82.1°F now against 84.0°F in December, which is the number to weigh if the sandbar trip is the reason you came.
For the free column, the shoreline at Treasure Beach costs nothing and takes as long as you let it. Beyond that we verified no free-admission day at any South Coast site in January, and our sources carry no dated January event for this coast, so we name none. The island-wide list covers what sits further afield.
The South Coast in January: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Light arrives at 6:43 am, so breakfast by 7:30 is not an act of heroism. Take the Black River boat in the first half of the morning while the air is still under its 84.4°F ceiling, eat inland or in shade around one, then put the swim at three or four, when the sea is nearest the 82.1°F daily maximum the marine data measures. Aim to be off the coast road well before the 5:56 pm sunset.
Day two. YS Falls in the morning, the boat out to Pelican Bar around midday, the last hour of light back at the bay. If the sky turns, and in an average January that happens on roughly one day in twenty-four, move the boat to the following morning and take the Appleton tour inland instead. The rain almost never occupies a full day here, so a two-hour delay usually rescues the plan.
The South Coast in January vs December and February
| Measure | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 84.7°F | 84.4°F | 84.7°F |
| Average low | 74.2°F | 73.2°F | 73.0°F |
| Precipitation | 0.90 in | 0.52 in | 0.68 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 1.5 | 1.3 | 1.5 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 84.0°F | 82.1°F | 81.2°F |
On air temperature the three months are within a third of a degree of each other at 84.7, 84.4 and 84.7°F, so nobody should pick a date on the daytime high. Rain does separate them: January’s 0.52 inches is 0.38 below December and 0.16 below February. The sea tells the clearest story of all, cooling steadily from 84.0°F in December to 82.1 in January and 81.2 in February.
Shift four weeks earlier and you buy 1.9°F of extra sea warmth and a degree of extra warmth at night, at the price of nearly twice the rain. Shift four weeks later and you lose another 0.9°F of water and gain 0.16 inches of rain, with nights a tenth of a degree cooler than January. Neither swap is dramatic, and both are worth knowing before you pay a holiday-week deposit.
Is January a good time to visit the South Coast?
Yes, for anyone whose trip lives outdoors: 1.3 wet days, 0.52 inches of rain, water at 82.1°F and afternoons at 84.4°F make a fortnight of boat trips and beach mornings a reasonable bet. It is a weaker month for two kinds of traveler, those who want the warmest water of the winter and those who need a fixed budget in advance, because we could verify no rate series for this coast.
If the water is the point, December answers better at 84.0°F, and the cost is 0.90 inches of rain across 1.5 wet days instead of 1.3. February is the weaker swap in every column we measured: warmer nights than January by only a tenth of a degree, more rain, and a sea down to 81.2°F.
What January alone delivers is the driest of the three winter months on this coast combined with a sea still above 82°F, a pairing neither neighbor manages.
The last word
Book January here for the dry ground and the early light, not for the warmest swim of the winter, and give the arrival day a private car so the first afternoon still contains an 82.1°F sea. One figure we have kept back until now says the rest: across the 1991-2020 average, January on this cell records 0.0 days with an inch of rain or more. The wet morning you plan around is a shower, and the gauge rarely notices.
