JAMAICA · PORT ANTONIO · AUGUST
Port Antonio sits at the north-eastern tip of Jamaica, where the Blue and John Crow Mountains drop close to the Caribbean. In August the town is hot, green and wet at the edges. Afternoon highs average 85.4°F, and the sea off the harbor peaks at 87.1°F on a typical day, warm enough to swim from first light.
If Port Antonio is already your pick, the open question is the date. August falls between a drier July and a wetter September, and it sits inside the hurricane season. That shapes how you book, more than what you pack. For flights and the drive east, start with our flights guide and airport transfers.

Every figure here comes from ERA5, the ECMWF model reanalysis served by Open-Meteo and averaged over 1991-2020 for the grid cell at 18.18°N, 76.45°W. That makes it a modeled value for a square of land and sea, not the reading of an airport thermometer. The cell sits over Port Antonio at the wet north-eastern end of the island, the rainiest corner of Jamaica, so these numbers don’t stand in for Montego Bay or Negril. For August, ERA5 gives an average high of 85.4°F, an average low of 77.4°F and 5.20 inches of rain.
Measurable rain, meaning 0.10 inch or more, falls on 12.9 days of an average August: roughly four days in ten. A day with an inch or more comes 0.5 times a month, so expect one real downpour every other August. Spread over nearly 13 wet days, 5.20 inches works out to about 0.4 inch on a typical rainy day. Give each outdoor morning a fallback and carry a light shell (our packing list has the rest).
Only 8°F separate the average high from the average low. Evenings stay near 77°F, so a sweater stays home. Pack breathable cotton or linen, two swimsuits so one can dry, a hat, and a long-sleeved shirt for sun cover on boat rides and mountain drives.
On August 15 the sun rises at 5:46 a.m. and sets at 6:33 p.m. local time, giving about 12 hours 46 minutes of daylight. Tropical dusk is short, so light fades soon after sunset. Aim to finish any drive on mountain roads before 6 p.m. and book dinner for after dark.
Port Antonio sea temperature in August: can you swim?
Yes. Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Port Antonio at 87.1°F in August, averaged over 2015-2024. That number is the mean of each day’s highest reading, so an average across all 24 hours would come out a shade lower. The air normals come from a different dataset and period (ERA5, 1991-2020), which is why we credit the two separately.
At 87.1°F the water runs 1.7°F above the average afternoon air high of 85.4°F. Getting in brings no chill at all, even for children or anyone who dreads cold water. The flip side: a midday swim cools you less than you might hope, so rest in the shade between dips and drink more water than usual.
We could not verify wave, wind or current data for Port Antonio in August, so we give no swell outlook. August does fall within the hurricane season, and a passing tropical system can change sea conditions within a day. Check the forecast each morning, swim where locals swim, and follow any flags on the beach.
How busy is Port Antonio in August? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Port Antonio, so we crown no month cheap or expensive. August does sit inside the hurricane season, a fact of the calendar that our hurricane-season guide breaks down with risk by month. For a daily budget in Jamaica, use our trip-cost guide.
Without booking-window data we give no week count. What August changes is the kind of rate you choose: pick a refundable room and flights you can move, and read the cancellation terms before paying. Also check our Hurricane Melissa update before you commit.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Port Antonio hotels, so we give no percentage. Ask each property for its total price with taxes and fees included, in writing, before you book.
With average lows of 77.4°F, air conditioning is the upgrade that changes an August stay. A fan-only room can feel close at night in a month when the thermometer barely drops. Pay extra for a room with a working unit and confirm it when you reserve.
Things to do in Port Antonio in August

August puts an 87.1°F sea alongside daylight from 5:46 a.m. to 6:33 p.m., so a swim before breakfast and another before dinner both fit easily. July’s water runs 1.4°F cooler, while September brings 0.94 inch more rain.
Start on the Titchfield Peninsula, the first place in the area the English settled and the oldest part of Port Antonio. Fort George stands there, as does DeMontevin Lodge, an eclectic Victorian design. In town, the Court House dates from 1895, and Christ Church stands on land indentured on September 3, 1836. Folly Point Lighthouse went up in 1888 with a fireproof masonry tower. Inland, the Blue and John Crow Mountains became Jamaica’s first UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015, covering 26,251.6 hectares. Our sources publish no opening hours or admission fees for any of these, and no Rio Grande rafting rate, so confirm with each operator.
Old stone doesn’t change with the season. The air does, and at 85.4°F by day the peninsula walk goes best before 9 a.m. The mountains rise from 850 m to 2,256 m (about 2,790 to 7,400 feet), and the air cools as you climb. Moore Town, whose Maroon heritage joined UNESCO’s intangible list in 2008, makes a half-day break from coastal heat. It is governed today by a Colonel, an honorary title earned by his ancestors. See our Blue Mountains guide for access.
Walking the peninsula’s streets past DeMontevin Lodge and Fort George costs nothing, and so does the view of the Court House from the road. We could not read an admission policy for any interior, so ask locally before you plan around one.
Port Antonio in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one. Swim at 6 a.m., just after the 5:46 sunrise, while the beach is quiet. At 7:30, walk the Titchfield Peninsula past Fort George and DeMontevin Lodge, then continue to the 1895 Court House and Christ Church. By 11 a.m. the air nears its 85.4°F high: take a long lunch in the shade and a siesta in your air-conditioned room. Get back in the water around 4 p.m., and be at the shore for the 6:33 p.m. sunset before dinner in town.
Day two. Leave at 7 a.m. for Moore Town and the lower slopes of the Blue and John Crow Mountains with a local driver or guide (our driving guide explains the roads). Be back on the coast by early afternoon for a last swim. With rain on 12.9 days of the month, a wet morning is likely at some point: swap the days, keep the mountains for the drier one, and use the downpour for a slow lunch in town.
Port Antonio in August vs July and September
| Measure | July | August | September |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 84.9°F | 85.4°F | 85.1°F |
| Average low | 77.2°F | 77.4°F | 77.1°F |
| Precipitation | 4.13 in | 5.20 in | 6.14 in |
| Days with 0.10 in or more | 11.4 | 12.9 | 14.5 |
| Sea surface (daily max, 2015-2024) | 85.7°F | 87.1°F | 87.9°F |
Air temperature barely moves across the three months: August’s 85.4°F high is 0.5°F above July and 0.3°F above September. Rain climbs steadily, from 4.13 inches over 11.4 days in July to 5.20 inches over 12.9 days in August and 6.14 inches over 14.5 days in September (ERA5, 1991-2020). The sea, from Open-Meteo’s Marine API, warms from 85.7°F to 87.1°F to 87.9°F.
Moving four weeks earlier to July saves 1.07 inches of rain and 1.5 wet days for a sea 1.4°F cooler. Pushing to September adds 0.8°F to the water, along with 0.94 inch more rain and 1.6 more wet days, deeper into hurricane season.
Is August a good time to visit Port Antonio?
Yes, for swimmers, heat lovers and anyone who can book flexibly: the sea is at 87.1°F and the days run nearly 13 hours. It suits less well if you need a guaranteed dry week or a non-refundable package, since rain lands on about four days in ten and the month falls in hurricane season.
If that tips you toward no, choose July: 4.13 inches of rain instead of 5.20, and a sea still at 85.7°F. For the island’s driest months overall, our best time to visit Jamaica guide runs through all twelve.
August gives Port Antonio a sea 1.4°F warmer than July’s while keeping nearly an inch less rain than September.
The last word
The decision that matters in August is the refundable booking. Get that right and the rest is warm water and long days. Leave room for one more drive west of town: Orange Bay Railway Station shows Jamaica Georgian features, and nearby Seaman’s Valley holds the ruins of a great house and the area’s first European cemetery. Go in the morning, and be back in the sea before sunset at 6:33.
